Flying through August & the summer holidays with Flylady!

Welcome to this long running thread, we may seem clicky, but all are welcome to join in!

Do NOT sign up for the Flylady emails - it's an excessive amount sent every day.

There are Baby Steps for starting out, add one thing at a time to start good habits and routines.

There are 5 zones that we will rotate through, don't worry about finishing it all this month, it'll come around again next month! Flylady is NOT about perfectionism!

Habit of the month of August is Laundry

Daily missions: each day of the week has a different mission.

  • Monday: Home Blessing (or as we call it, home bleugh)
  • Tuesday: plan & play
  • Wednesday: anti-procrastination
  • Thursday: errand day
  • Friday: clean car & purse out and date night (what's that again?? 🤔)
  • Saturday: family fun day
  • Sunday: renew your spirit

Common acronyms we use:

  • LOL: load of laundry (washing is certainly NOT funny!)
  • DW: dishwasher, we are not rotating wives by any means, although an extra pair of hands could come in handy sometimes 😆
  • LMS: lose/lost my shit
  • DNLMS: did not lose my shit

I'm sure there's more I haven't mentioned, feel free to ask us to explain something. I'll try to update links every day, although if you can, it's worth downloading the app, you can even have it send you notifications (although I only have it for when the zones change).

As a side note, this is my first time leading this thread, please be patient with me if I miss something. We really are a friendly bunch!
Links are below 👇 if I happen to not add links in time, they do update at midnight for you.

I don't worry about botulism because i follow tried and tested nchfp safe recipes and methods. I have resources i can send you if you want. There are a few things that you need to watch - strength of vinegar is one that can catch even experienced canners out, head space is another, hot vs cold pack.

I love my dehydrator. Which reminds me i need to look up the seasoning blend ratios for mirapox powder so i can get that made up now i have the dehydrated carrots almost through their conditioning phase.

Today is a kitchen day.
Washing up
stock processed
more washing up
stock bones roasted

And then if i have energy and time - more stuff out of the loft.

SingToTheSky · 27/08/2023 12:25

Thanks lovely fledglings 💐

Quiet day at home today, I didn’t get much sleep and DH is out. I ended up writing a long list of tasks. So much stuff needs to be moved/rehomed or given a home for the first time. Obviously not denying the need for a LOT more decluttering (there is some on the list too, just specific bits) but one of the key issues in our house is that there is lots of stuff that has never had a home, it’s just somewhere. Although it’s been stressful and exhausting, doing the Caglets’ rooms has at least given an opportunity to reorganise, especially kids’ stuff obviously but that has a knock on effect on the rest of the house. Just need to keep ploughing on. With lots of rest. 😬

EversoDetermined · 27/08/2023 15:34

@DitzyDaffodils squinny means whinger or whinging, you might call someone a squinny if they are whinging and moaning or say "he's done a squinny" when describing said whinge to someone else.

partypompoms · 27/08/2023 17:05

@HillsBesideTheSea I appreciate any advice from those more experienced.
In fact I was just looking to buy white vinegar but could only find distilled malt so didn't buy it (after a quick google said they are different). Is that right in your opinion?

✅ 2 lols of bedding washed and dried and out away
✅ sorted all my Vinted clothes by listing or charity bagging them. I've been putting this off all summer.
✅ bought two dressing up dresses in the Asda sale to put away for Christmas.
✅ quick food shop to get us through a few days. I'm really in a rut with food and shopping and cooking. I'm out of ideas and energy for it everyday.

DomesticElf · 27/08/2023 17:42

We <ahem> might have bought a house 😬
So if all goes to plan, there will be another move in next 2 months 😅

Last few days I've been caught in the whirlwind of viewings/offers/phonecalls/toddler/nappies/laundry/cooking/and never ending kitchen clean up.

HillsBesideTheSea · 27/08/2023 18:08

@partypompoms Bare with me on that question, I will ask the experts and get back to you. I know what my gut would say but don't want to lead you astray. In the mean time this link will give you the portal to lots of info.

all the info on all the things

Congratulations elf

DitzyDaffodils · 27/08/2023 18:16

Sounds like a good plan of action to find everything a home Sing

I think I like that word ED

Waves hi over the fence to Pompoms

Congratulations Elf✨ 🏡✨

I'm supposed to be cleaning, but I've always had enough by this time in the evening so I start procrastinating doing other things. Currently cleaning up photo frames. I should start earlier. I know this. I never do though

partypompoms · 27/08/2023 19:41

@ditzy are you really in Wales too?

SingToTheSky · 27/08/2023 23:44

Ooh exciting elf

ta da
🔎put dryer on again (twice!) as DS’ stuff from last night still wasn’t dry
🔎ordered bedding for DS
🔎with DD1’s help, moved kids non-fiction and nice chapter books into Cagletini’s shelving (they were downstairs before but ended up with random crap being put in front of them aaaall the time) - got rid of a few as I went but will want to be more ruthless on another go round
🔎got DS to sort more Lego
🔎decluttered transformers with DS and bagged up for bin/charity
🔎went through all DS’ clothes with him so he could pack them into new storage under his bed
🔎divided old clothes into throw/donate and bagged accordingly
🔎LOL of Cagletini’s clothes
🔎gathered a category of Cagletini’s toys into a better basket
🔎drafted an email

Upsadiddles · 28/08/2023 09:19

Congratulations Elf! Very exciting!

That’s an impressive list when you haven’t been feeling great Sing.

I had no idea what scramming meant Pompoms. I’m in the north east and there’s lots of words that I didn’t realise were regional.

We’ve had a busy few days with some trips out, and I also had a night out with friends on Saturday so yesterday was a bit of a write-off. Not many TaDas to report but I’ve stuck to my basic routines. Hoping for a decent list by the end of the day as I’m back to work tomorrow.

InAndOutOfTheRedBalloon · 28/08/2023 11:00

Morning, returning Flybaby checking in. I used to be on here a lot, but had a social media meltdown earlier in the year and had everything deleted. However, this weekend is the 20th anniversary of my starting Flylady, so it seemed a good time to get back to it (and god, my house needs it!)

SingToTheSky · 28/08/2023 11:40

Welcome back inandout or should we call you balloon? 💐

Have had a lazy morning, managed to catch up on sleep a bit. Hoping DH and DD1 will make a start on actual decorating in her room today (it’s too small for me to be in there too… sad times 😇) and I’ll just carry on helping the others sort their storage.

thistlescot · 28/08/2023 12:21

can I join please? Would really like to get a routine going to help me with keeping on top of things. Have been reading the thread and have got the gist but I do struggle with remembering things so I'm hoping this will help me keep track!

HillsBesideTheSea · 28/08/2023 14:01

Did we have a volunteer for next month? i can't as pure chaos here which is what happens when 3 room's contents have to be shoved in the lounge and dinning room. <sigh>

ta da
Dw empty, reload, run
whole heap of washing up
sort out prep for kitchen stuff i need to do today
get the stock simmering and finishing off

Not bad considering i have been up less than 2 hours thanks to an awful insomnia night and not sleeping til 5am.

EversoDetermined · 28/08/2023 14:59

I can do it if no one else is able to @HillsBesideTheSea , we are home from holidays today and will need to tackle the house again, having also been in the several rooms having to be emptied scenario earlier in the summer.

EversoDetermined · 28/08/2023 15:01

But today we have to tackle Mount Washmore, I am tired, been up since 4am but feeling very fortunate our flight was not affected by ATC problems.

Searchingforsunnydays · 28/08/2023 17:22

We're back from our final holiday of the summer !

Ta da
✅ car and caravan unpacked
✅ washing in appropriate baskets
✅ 1st wash on
✅ everyone showered
✅ toiletries put away
✅ list of to do written for tomorrow and some of Wednesday (plans are flexible this week)
✅ cleaned the shower screen

Waiting for oh to come back from fetching a chippy tea so will have the pits to sort but planning on a relaxing evening playing 1-2 switch with the kids before things start getting back to normal !

Congratulations on your house @DomesticElf !! Exciting times!!

DitzyDaffodils · 28/08/2023 18:41

Welcome to the thread thistle and balloon

Nothing going on here. Riding a train at procrastination central. Destination: nowhere. I have to do a whole bunch of stuff and I don't want to do it. Nope nope nope

BloomingHazel · 28/08/2023 19:20

Oh man have I missed a lot!
Elf that is exciting news, I hope everything goes quickly and smoothly for you 🤞
hills that sounds so stressful! I hope you sleep better tonight

Welcome @InAndOutOfTheRedBalloon & @thistlescot

Sorry I have been AWOL, we got back from camping yesterday, but between laundry, bathing everyone and then sitting to watch a movie, I completely failed as thread leader!

OP posts:
BloomingHazel · 28/08/2023 19:25

Monday is home blessing (home bleugh). Change sheets, empty rubbish bins, quick vacuum of high traffic areas (all in an hour 🤣)

We are now in zone 5, living room, until the end of the month.
Today's mission is to spend 5 minutes cleaning and dusting your ornaments / nick nacks. Include any decorations you may have up, picture frames, lamps etc.
I'll be back with the baby step...

OP posts:
BloomingHazel · 28/08/2023 19:30

Today's baby step is to make time for yourself. Sit down for 15 minutes, read a book, have a cup of tea. You must remember to eat proper meals, drink plenty of water and get rest. hills I'm looking at you 👀

I do realise it's about the end of the day for you all, I'm sorry!

Hi @InAndOutOfTheRedBalloon and @thistlescot

@HillsBesideTheSea and @EversoDetermined I did say a while ago that I would but I can do October if you want to do September. Or visa versa.

@BloomingHazel I wouldn't worry. Does anyone even fly during the holidays? Mines more of a glide.

✅ family day out: successfully took all meals, cuppas and snacks so kids straight to bed when we got home and no money spent on food and drink.
✅ lol
✅ bed change after a wet night accident (kids not me)

InAndOutOfTheRedBalloon · 28/08/2023 22:14

Thanks for the welcome back! Happy to be InAndOut or Balloon, as suits you at the time.

@DomesticElf congratulations on the baby and the house! How exciting!

@BloomingHazel so sorry to hear about your house fire, hope all can be made good soon.

👋 to everyone else and thank you for the welcome back!

Today, in honour of my 20th Flyversary (is that a word?) I have
🍦 Actually done my morning routine
🍦 2 LOLs washed and on the line, dried, folded and brought back in
🍦 Helped DH go through 6 boxes of family papers and photographs
🍦 Failed to testdrive an electric car (the showroom forgot the charge it 🤦. You couldn't make this up!)

Going to do my evening routine now and hope tomorrow goes as well.

thistlescot · 28/08/2023 22:31

Today did two LOL hung out to dry, towels still on the line
Tried on new school clothes
Lint rolled the rug in living room
Emptied bins
Cleaned sink to shine

Went crabbing today which was good fun, took sandwiches and snacks but did buy hot drinks

DomesticElf · 29/08/2023 01:01

Hello Thistle and Balloon 👋

Balloon happy Flyversary! Your electric car fiasco made me giggle (although I appreciate it must have been very frustrating at the time). That has always been my question about fully electric cars, what if one runs out of juice somewhere half way through a long road trip? And provided there is a handy charging point, it's not exactly as fast as nipping in to get some gas. One has to sit there for 2 hours waiting for the thing to charge?

Thistle oh I e never tried lint rolling a rug 🤔 I may need to do this to my new bathroom mat, it sheds fluffs eventhough it's not of a fluffy variety if that makes sense.

Hazel how was camping? Sunny sounds like a relaxing evening. How long were you away for?
Pompoms I like how you specified re accident 😬
Ditzy <welcomes into a naughty corner with fluffy blankets and snacks and hot chocolate and wine>
Hills survive

My flying has been mainly keeping up with usual routines, although I have been slacking a bit on folding the dry laundry front. Got 2 loads waiting to be put away.
Planning to do some proper zone work today.
