Do you do main grocery shop weekly, fortnightly or monthly?

taffy101 · 26/02/2008 13:44

I only ask as I am embarking on an experiment to do main shop fortnightly and shop locally for fresh stuff that I run out of.

Has anyone done this and found it totally doesn't work?
Any top tips for success?

I did the first fortnightly shop today and my head was spinning at the end wondering if I got enough stuff and trolley v. heavy!

Any advice welcome

weekly - tried fortnightly, overwhelmed me with decisions and bought a load of food that didn't go together!! ha ha

MaryAnnSingleton · 26/02/2008 13:45

weekly, and we still run out...wish I could do it fortnightly !

foofi · 26/02/2008 13:46

I shop daily.

Iota · 26/02/2008 13:57

usually weekly, although I sometimes go for longer when dh is away. I have the luxury of being able to shop on any day as I am SAHM, so am not very disciplined.

Weekly.
Veg box comes Friday. (with enough milk for weekend)
Do the supermarket run Monday.
Hardly ever go into a food shop in between.

TheBlonde · 29/02/2008 20:08

I do main tesco shop fortnightly and get and organic box on alternate weeks (also fortnightly) think that makes sense. Works ok. need to get milk and bread sometimes, but thats it.

SaMumInUK · 29/02/2008 20:12

In our house we do a monthly shop with fill ups in between.

I have a fortnightly delivery, and pop out locally during the week - works very well, the freezer/fridge is totally full after the delivery, and pretty much empty at the end of the 2 weeks. I also have a milkman for eggs/bread/milk, so go out for veg, and some meat.

I've had to sort out a space to store beer, soft drinks etc, but well worth it so I never have to carry them.

I love it because I never have to go inside a big supermarket, which I hate, and can do my shopping cycling or walking.

lizziemun · 01/03/2008 08:10

I do mine completely different to everyone else.

I do a tesco shop every 2 or 3 months to stock up my cupboards.

Then i shop for basics bread/cheese and fruit and veg each week.

Milkman brings milk.

taffy101 · 01/03/2008 21:27

Thanks for your responses.

lizziemun, tesco every 2 or 3 months - wow!
I could never dream of being that organised. I might try and live up to minum's technique.

Think delivery would be good as the trolley gets very heavy to push back to car (i am only little and feeble).

No milkman round these parts unfortunately but our village shops are quite good for the fresh things that I will run out of.

I am near end of week one and realise I should have bought twice as much cheese and twice as much creme fraiche! But its a learning curve - i do NOT want to waste precious days off work shopping in tesco!

monthly for big heavy stuff, washing powder, dog food etc. get a taxi or a lift
weekly for meat and milk locally
daily even more locally for whatever I fancy for dinner

Clary · 02/03/2008 00:50

A pal told me she shops fortnightly - and then of course gets fresh stuff as and when.

My prob with this is that to get organic milk which we prefer, in big bottle which we need, I have to go to Sainsbos or Asda, so may as well pick up other things too.

Result is that we go every 4 days or so (eg this week I went Monday and DH Thursday). Really wish it wans't so often. But we just run out!

How do people do it? All we buy at supermarket on these trips anyway is milk, bread, veg, fruit, butter, meat. I can't get what I want locally except during the day when I am at work and don't have time to go and pick up stuff.

every so often we stock up on pasta, tinned toms cereals etc but I really mean once a month.

globetrotterinvietnam · 02/03/2008 07:27

I lve irght next to a market in Vietnam, so I go often. The quality of things isn't that great sometimes, but I don't mind.

I don't llike bargaining though.

needmorecoffee · 02/03/2008 07:50

Don't really do a big shop but pop out daily. Milk comes from the milkman, eggs from the chickens and we get a weekly veg box.

donbean · 02/03/2008 08:03

weekly, armed with my meal planned shopping list. Spent £24 for this weeks food.
then once a month i get extras like washing powder etc. try to keep this shop below £50.

I aways buy bogof offers on fresh fruit juices and freeze one for use later in the week when we run out.
Put bread in freezer and use as we need..etc. make stuff last.

We are on a very tight budget.

octavia · 02/03/2008 15:58

weekly but on the 4th week only shop for bread, milk, fruit&veg so that I use things up.

DiscoDizzy · 02/03/2008 16:00

I shop every week and a half, i.e Friday one week, then not the tuesday after, but the following tuesday. used to do it every week and was spending a hell of a lot each week for food I didn't necessarily need.
