Do you do main grocery shop weekly, fortnightly or monthly?

I only ask as I am embarking on an experiment to do main shop fortnightly and shop locally for fresh stuff that I run out of.

Has anyone done this and found it totally doesn't work?
Any top tips for success?

I did the first fortnightly shop today and my head was spinning at the end wondering if I got enough stuff and trolley v. heavy!

Any advice welcome

Weekly

Weekly. The way Ds rampages through his favourite foods? There'd be none left!!

Monthly internet shop with weekly veg delivery and milk and bread top ups from the local Co-op. You need quite a bit of storage for the cereals I find, but certainly doable and I only have a three drawer freezer.

Clary, you can freeze milk, butter and bread.

Every week/10 days here. We always seem to run out of bananas and eggs for some reason.

Every 6 weeks Tesco delivery. Then 1st week no shopping. 2nd Week bread and milk, 3rd week bread milk fruit and veg. Carry on like this until supplies look desperate, order Tesco for following week and have a week on rice beans and sausages .
Works out between 5-7 weeks.

but fruit and veg doesn't last longer than 2-3 days? Not and be nice. What do the once a week or once a month shoppers do?

Posey · 02/03/2008 19:54

Weekly, but need to get more milk, bread and fruit in between, as we get through tons of it.

Hulababy · 02/03/2008 19:56

Online weekly, but still get in fresh bread and veg during the week, and milk delivered every other day.

When I was gettng a veg box each week I only did the online shop every fortnight.

VanillaPumpkin · 03/03/2008 13:19

Needmorecoffee - We have a weekly veg box on an Thurs and I usually make a casserole using veg on the Fri, use some on Sat, roast on the Sun and then use tinned sweetcorn or frozen peas on the Monday, tinned tomatoes/pasta sauce on the tuesday and frozen green beans on the wed. When I get the milk and bread from our local small Co-op I also buy fruit and peppers and mushrooms or anything else they have on offer for soups etc. The onions and potatoes last fine, as do the carrots covered in mud tbh. The green stuff that comes gets eaten first.
I love the fact I never go to the supermarket and it means that when I do go it is actually a treat due to the novelty.

I never knew shopping was so interesting!
Thanks for all comments. I'm aspiring to a fortnightly 'dry goods' shop and support my local village shops for fresh goods in between. Normally would do 'big shop' tomorrow but am going to just buy fresh essentials as I did tesco last tues.
I must find out about a local veg delivery box too...

we went to a supermarket for the first time in months and month a couple of weeks ago cos we finally got a motability car. The buses to the supermarket aren't accessible so we've been shopping at local shops.
Gosh, bu it was huge and I got in a flap and spent more money than I usually do AND the fruit and veg was more expensive than the high st greengrocers.
urk. Not going back there again!

VanillaPumpkin · 04/03/2008 09:42

We moved back from oversea two years ago and went to the local Asda for our first shop. It was so big and so busy we drove around the car park and then I went into a slight panic about the whole thing and so we drove out without parking and went home via a medium sized Co-op. That was plenty big enough for me . When I finally braved the supermarket I was totally overwhelmed and couldn't find anything! Even choosing the milk was traumatic. I was in there for hours. Horrid.

A colleague was going to name his DS woody ? luckily (imo) they went for Jacob instead.

I think it?s rather an unusual name, but not one I?d go for. Second names I agree are irrelevant. I quite like Orla but think you need to be careful with surnames. Benjamin is very nice tho always popular, if that matters to you. I like Clementine better than Orla myself.
