I know it’s only Boxing Day, but I am trying to get motivated to do some tidying up as I have a few hours spare today. My house is very small so even a few extra new things mean that other things have to go. There is also wrapping paper everywhere and the kitchen is a bit of a disaster…

Sorry, what I means to say is that it would be good to hear from anyone else doing it to get me motivated. So far all I have achieved is a load of washing (have lots of washing as we went away for a few days before Christmas).

Too early for me. I will step over stuff until tomorrow…..

FayKnights · 26/12/2022 13:12

We’ve got family coming over which definitely got me motivated! Otherwise I would still be in my pjs watching tv.

Velvetbee · 26/12/2022 13:15

I’m really excited to do this but I’m at my lovely inlaws today so can’t start yet. You start and I’ll live vicariously through you til later. I tend to use a clear out as an excuse to rearrange the furniture too.

Always4Brenner · 26/12/2022 13:16

My cards can come down tomorrow.

Melon9 · 26/12/2022 13:18

I got a fair amount done before Christmas, did 3 trips to the tip, but a lot of stuff ended up being shoved in various cupboards and wardrobes.

I'm not touching it for the rest of the week but then I'll get cracking.

I have real issues with removing things from my life, it feels like such a waste of money and resources. I did incredibly well this year and plan to continue.

Good luck to you.

Notcontent · 26/12/2022 13:24

Thanks for the encouragement. I would leave it until later but I work full time and going back to work later this week so need to get cracking…

I’m googling storage cubes as we speak

PolarBlair · 26/12/2022 13:29

Ooh I'll be delighted to join this train once we get to January 😊

Notcontent · 26/12/2022 21:30

So - just reporting back. I worked solidly for a few hours but didn’t actually achieve that much. Everything just takes so long. Two loads of washing. Cleaned the kitchen. Took out lots of recycling. Put away a few things. That’s about it really. Tomorrow is another day…

DancingSober · 26/12/2022 21:32

We have a slot booked at the tip this week to get rid of various things. T'is definitely the season. We're also in a tiny house.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 26/12/2022 21:34

I found some motivation after work today and cleaned out my kitchen side board (where all the pasta, snacks, crisps etc live) and a cupboard with salt and flour and stuff in.
I got rid of loads.
Aiming for the living room side board tomorrow and the bathroom on Wednesday.
No where is safe from the bin bag of doom.

dudsville · 26/12/2022 21:38

I did a wardrobe first out and filled a bin bag. Feels great!

tensmumm · 26/12/2022 21:45

I did the same, 2 loads of washing, kitchen cleaned and recycling done. I've got to sort out a lot to prep for an extension but I hardly have any time so I need to get more efficient at clearing things.

InvincibleInvisibility · 26/12/2022 23:07

I'm definitely joining. I'm aiming for minimalism- have made huge progress over 18 months but still have more to do.

The house is pretty tidy cos DH threw the paper away as the DC were unwrapping, none of the adults received physical presents, and the DC only got a few physical presents, the rest are days out.

My aim this week is to declutter Christmas decorations. We didn't use a lot of them and I only want to keep my favourites.

And in the next 2 months I have some books I want to read or let go.

skilpadde · 26/12/2022 23:25

If anyone is looking to do a bigger declutter, I'd recommend Apartment Therapy's January Cure, for a few weeks of decluttering tasks to tackle.

Theoldwoman · 26/12/2022 23:28

I am doing a huge drop of to the thrift store today!

AtSomePointInLife · 26/12/2022 23:40

I've done quite a bit tonight trying to burn off the box of after eights and half of tin of quality streets I ate for breakfast not to mention the crap I've eaten the rest of the day 🤢Everything feels much tidier. The tree won't come down until Friday for the kids sake although I'm not sure, it's real and so dry, I only have to look at it and it falls apart, it's making me feel itchy so we shall see if it lasts.

Notcontent · 27/12/2022 00:59

Good to see others are doing the same!
@tensmumm sounds like we were set to the same programme…😂

i think tomorrow some of my local charity shops are open so I am planning a trip to drop off at least a couple of bags. Assuming they are taking donations, as sometimes they don’t.

@Eatentoomanyroses

@Notcontent & everyone.

watch/listen to Dana K White (pod casts & YouTube)

She'll help you SO much. She had her own issues struggling with clutter/mess & tried lots of things that didn't work for her, but she worked out strategies that work for her & she's really interesting.

progress & only progress. So you don't end up with a bugger mess than you started with.

I could drone on for ages about how great her system is, but you'd be better off watch her YouTube videos.

MintJulia · 27/12/2022 01:13

My ds is away at his dad's until NYE so I started today with his room,

Moved all the furniture, hoovered & dusted
Changed the bedding
New lamp shades
Hung a picture he got for Christmas
Scrubbed some marks off the skirting boards with jif
Treated a couple of tiny patches of black mould with bleach spray
Cleaned the windows
Tidied away all his books and swimming gear
Emptied his washing basket
Left the window open for an hour.

My room tomorrow 🤗

Namaste6 · 27/12/2022 03:44

Ooh great thread! Just reading through them is getting me motivated! I love January to March for clear outs / decorating / generally getting the house and garden into order, ready for another year of life. I go into each room and make a list of things to do, then methodically check them off as they get done. Audible and a good podcast helps!

Theoldwoman · 27/12/2022 03:55

I am just back from dropping off a car boot full of clothes, books, games and kitchen stuff!

Having a rest now then will do some more.

Thanks @SkylightSkylight I am going to look her up-will report back to the thread

MushMonster · 27/12/2022 09:24

I am in!
Sadly, I have to do the whole house, but I am off till the second week next year.
Firstly, we have to eat all the extra food! Lol
Today, we will start with my DD room decluttering. Usually results in two full piles of laundry (to be added to my already humungous one, as I have not done laundry since last thursday!). Tomorrow, painting her room. It needs a fresh coat. And taking stuff to the tip.
