Dishwasher with a cutlery drawer

sidsgranny · 20/07/2022 17:31

Our dishwasher has finally given up the ghost.

I've been looking at ones with a cutlery drawer but am concerned it might mean I can't get taller glasses etc in the top rack. Does anyone have one?

Thanks!

My cutlery is never properly clean since getting a dishwasher with a cutlery tray.

bestofme · 20/07/2022 22:05

We have a Miele dishwasher and the cutlery drawer at the top slides across to half the width which means there is more space above the basket below.

Buy a Miele , best white good ever.
My cutlery tray never gets in the way of anything and after nine years it's still doing well.

I have a Miele with a tray and the top stacking basket can be moved up and down to make more room to accommodate taller items. Love it.

We may have the same Miele, I don't move the basket often but it moves on a lever at the side rather than having to take the whole basket out so it is easy to move if you need to. I wasn't sure about the cutlery tray when we got it but I like it now, it's really good.

My Miele has an adjustable top rack. It goes up and down and you can slide sections away altogether, so I can wash even quite tall items at the top if I want to. The cutlery rack has its own spray arm so everything is thoroughly washed.

I would never go back to a cutlery basket. We are on holiday now and the house has one, which has reminded me how shit they are.

Anyway the best thing about a cutlery rack is that you can load it so it looks perfect. Makes me happy 😀

I have a Miele <twirls> it has a cutlery tray, but you have to rethink the loading. Mugs, bowls go in the middle basket and tall glasses. Water bottles go on the bottom basket , there’s a place for glasses on the bottom that’s safe. I get so much more in than my old BOSH. It’s a much better use of space.

Bosch with a tray here - never again! It's bloody annoying. Even some shorter tumblers don't fit under it, wine glasses have no chance.

dementedpixie · 20/07/2022 22:30

I use dinner plates with diameter of around 25/26cm. This means my upper tray can be at a level that fits our glasses. Some taller ones have to lean at an angle but most fit fine. I have wine glasses with a short stubby stem

catwithflowers · 20/07/2022 22:33

I've had both, both Bosch, and definitely prefer the cutlery basket at the bottom

Delphigirl · 20/07/2022 22:37

I do I love it. Most have a 2 height top rack (not cutlery rack but glasses rack) so you can move it up and down to make either more room for tall plates below, or tall glasses in that level. Get one of those. Mine are Miele, they are great.

TugboatAnnie · 20/07/2022 23:00

After I used the cutlery tray once I removed it and used the basket from our old dishwasher. With a basket, you can take it across to the cutlery drawer to unload, with a cutlery tray you have to remove all the items individually and carry them over. It probably sounds a small problem but very annoying to me!
Obviously this means tall stuff can go in the top rack especially large plastic items that I wouldn't want to put in the bottom anyway.

greenacrylicpaint · 21/07/2022 06:56

I dislike baskets as they always stay slighly wet at the bottom and you have to towel-dry the cuttlery. that doesn't happen with our drawer (bosch)

and then there is the sagety aspect of a basket... open dishwasher door + clumsy person (or children having a wild moment)

EspeciallyDeIighted · 21/07/2022 07:57

I've never had to towel dry cutlery from a basket and it gets cleaner there than in our Bosch tray where we normally have to rewash a few items. Safety is not an issue if you put cutlery handles up and aren't in the habit of leaving the door open.

Floralnomad · 22/07/2022 17:30

We’ve never had an issue with items not being clean in the cutlery rack on our Bosch .

yikesanotherbooboo · 22/07/2022 17:37

D sis has both types of DW and chooses to use the basket one as default.

Theoldwoman · 24/07/2022 14:00

A cutlery tray is the bomb.
I load tall glasses at the bottom (Miele)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/07/2022 14:05

Cutlery trays are a PITA if your cutlery drawer is not near your dishwasher.

SisyphusDad · 24/07/2022 14:45

Recently bought a Bosch dishwasher with a cutlery tray, having previously had one with a basket. I have to say I really dislike it. I can either fit tall glasses or 'normal' dinner plates but not both. I would never buy a dishwasher with a cutlery tray again.

easyday · 24/07/2022 14:50

Yes it's fine - I can also move the rack below down.

FatToFitPart3 · 24/07/2022 15:00

Hate the cutlery drawer. Pain to load, and reduces space on the top rack for taller items. Can’t wait for it to die on me so I can replace it with one with a basket.

Angrymum22 · 24/07/2022 15:00

I designed my kitchen around my Miele dishwasher. The cutlery drawer and plate cupboard are located so that you don’t have to trail round the kitchen to put everything away.
I have loved my cutlery tray since the day I bought it. I had to educate my DH in the art of loading it, he soon discovered the delight of being able to just gather up all the knives and put them straight into the drawer.
My DF taught us the art of ergonomics as children. It has given me hours more free time over my lifetime.

tootiredforanything · 24/07/2022 15:04

I've had a couple with cutlery trays now. I wouldn't go back to one with a cutlery basket. I've never noticed a problem with tall glasses. We've got a couple of tall pint glasses (similar to those used in a pub) and they fit ok!
