londonmummy2 we had the full set of those damn books but dd2 let me give away about 70 a year ago. These are the remaining ones. The good thing about Rainbow fairy books is they’re such a waste of money that when I advertise them on Facebook for free I know someone will collect them.

Gassylady · 25/04/2022 14:50

Sorted through youngest’s wardrobe today. Lots of shorts and t-shirts for charity bag. Couple of onesies too - thought I might try those on eBay, always useful for keeping warm when camping at night.
Notification that my donated goods were sold for £250 at Barnados in the last tax year 😃and that is not the only place I take stuff. Seems like a lot for books and clothes

Gassylady · 25/04/2022 14:51

Still haven’t done anything with stamps or photos. Family visitors gave us all rotten colds - that’s this weeks excuse 😂😚

Squirrelandnuts · 25/04/2022 14:55

Help! A pile of clothes fell off the landing. It's been sitting there for a week. I've even taken clothes from the pile to wear.

But, I don't know where to move them to, all the wardrobes and most of the suitcases are full.

I've been taking small bags of stuff to the charity shop. But, can't face going through this pile.

lightand · 25/04/2022 14:56

Photos is always bottom of my to do list. Hence havent done it in years.
Which isnt going to be very clever of me, if the world goes all haywire for whatever reason.
I havent had photos printed in such a long time.

Leave it until you can face it?
Not sure that is the most helpful advice.
But I find I am much better at tidying[attempting to do whole house, am 18 months in, about 12 months worth still to go?] when I feel like tackling something.
Today has been toys and games.

Alternatively, I read a good tip about procrastinating a few weeks ago. It said tackle something for 3 mins per day. works well in my opinion.

WildBlueAndDitzy · 25/04/2022 15:06

Squirrel I'd leave the pile where it is. Pick from it to wear this week, that way it'll get picked up, worn and washed ready to put away.

In the meantime, tackle one of those wardrobes or drawers that you haven't looked in for ages, because if you're not wearing clothes from there you probably don't need them.

Go through for anything worn out, holey, lost its shape, too bobbly etc and recycle bin them.

Then see if there's anything that doesn't fit and charity shop them.

Lastly, take out anything you just don't like and donate those too.

After all that you might have room for the clothes from the landing pile once they're ready to put away.

Squirrelandnuts · 25/04/2022 15:39

Thanks @WildBlueAndDitzy
What a comforting answer 😌

hugoagogo · 25/04/2022 19:47

Today a bag of dvds to cex.
1 folder of bank statements shredded.
A bag of makeup to boots.
Ink cartridges to rymans.
Old drinking glasses to the charity shop.
Glasses to the bin at the opticians.
It's a slow job...

Myleakycauldron · 25/04/2022 21:07

I tried and failed to post earlier and have name changed as well!

Today I got rid of a bag of baby clothes to a friend, a bag to the recycling and some more deposited in the charity shop bag (yet to leave the house though).

Tomorrow I need to post a couple of bits on Facebook and find another area to tackle.

I agree it's sooo slow. I only started a week or so ago and I think I've made progress but there's just so much stuff in my house and getting rid of it takes ages!

EllieQ · 25/04/2022 22:09

No progress over the past few days. I’d hoped to do more sorting of DD’s old clothes on Saturday, but for various reasons I couldn’t get any free time during the day. It was DD’s birthday party on Sunday, so party bag contents went out and more birthday presents came in.

Back to school this week, so I’m back to the usual routine of work and school run with very little free time to do anything extra.

ememem84 · 26/04/2022 08:14

Huge cardboard box out for recycling this morning. And the builders came yesterday and cleared out our garage.

I’ve also used up a cleanser an eyeliner and a moisturiser. So that’s a few little things gone.

seperatedmum · 26/04/2022 08:49

listed a cookbook on olio and arranged collection immediately. I'll take that 👍🏽

stealthninjamum · 26/04/2022 11:30

squirrelandnuts you’ve already been given good advice. I would just agree that maybe you could spend a few minutes in wardrobes looking for clothes that are scruffy, faded, stained, holey, old fashioned or perhaps ill fitting. Put the pile away when you have space.

To my surprise music magpie have wanted about 15 of my Rainbow bloody Fairy books - although are paying me between 1p and 5p for them.

I have just had someone collect some half done jewellery craft sets and plant pots. I’m now going to empty the top of dd1s wardrobe onto her bed so she has to choose what she wants to keep.

Information posted on previous threads by @stealthninjamum on how to get rid of all that clutter

Some information on getting rid of items that have been asked about on previous threads.
If anyone has anything to add to this list could you please highlight it in bold and hopefully I can update this post for the next thread.

SELLING THINGS

Ebay
Facebook sales sites
Shpock
Gumtree
webuybooks.co.uk
musicmagpie.co.uk (for CDs, DVDs, Games, Books, iPhones, Games Consoles and LEGO)
ziffit - for books, CDs, DVDs and games
Sellitback
Zapper
GAME / CEX for phones and games and electronics (CEX in particular)
Apple Store credit or recycle old phones.

www.thrift.plus is a second hand clothes site where you can sell your clothes. It’s for more high end clothes than www.isecondthat.co.uk which will take Tu and primark.

Also someone on the thread has recommended the Vinted app for selling children's clothes.

TO GET RID OF THINGS FOR FREE

Freecyle has a good app called trashnothing
Olio is a site for giving away food and other household items.

Charity shops. Some will collect which really helps if you’re just starting to declutter and have a lot of stuff to go.

Animal shelters like towels and carpet squares and sometimes bedding and duvet covers.

Homeless charities will often take warm clothes and coats, especially in the winter.

You can advertise things on Nextdoor

Some council tips have a place to drop off quality stuff to be sold.

Some charity shops will take rags if you label them as ‘rags’, this could be materials or clothes that are too scruffy or dirty to sell or donate to someone. Also some councils will collect rags (but you’ll need to contact your council)

Supermarkets are getting better at recycling. My local Tesco has recycling points for batteries, toner cartridges, glass bottles, books and and light bulbs. My local Sainsbury’s has razer blades.

Bras. Oxfam shops take bras and so do some smaller lingeries shops. Bravissimo do a scheme whereby they send good bras to Africa and strip down those that are too old for parts as well as donating 70p per kilo of bras to MIND. Also smallsforall.org take brand new knickers and good condition bras and send to Africa

Some charity shops will now arrange collection of clothes and other things – these are some links depending on your area.
www.heartuk.org.uk/other-ways-to-give/clothes-recycling

www.bhf.org.uk/shop/donating-goods/time-for-a-clear-out/donate-your-items/arrange-a-free-collection
(BHF also collect toys, puzzles, books, CDs, DVDs as well as clothes)

www.mariecurie.org.uk/donate/charity-shops If you live near a shop

www.icollectclothes.co.uk/ will collect your clothes in some areas.

Nurseries and preschools will often take old toys, games, books, craft sets and/ or stationery. They might also take clean (obviously) underwear and clothes to keep as spares for when children have accidents.

Soft toys. The Teddy Trust

and

www.lovedbefore.london/donate

Foodbanks take all sorts of food (if it is within date) and sometimes half open packets of nappies.

Rymans take old pens

Oxfam take old phones

John Lewis also have a make up recycling scheme:
www.johnlewis.com/our-services/beautycycle

And a small number of Boots stores www.boots.com/boots-recycling-scheme

IF YOU’RE HAPPY TO PAY FOR MORE BULKY WASTE

Clearabee have been recommended to get rid of more bulky garage – type waste and Hippo Bags can be bought from some DIY stores.

Also www.clearwaste.com is apparently a site to get quotes from registered waste disposal firms (but none of us have used it).

If you do use a company to remove this sort of rubbish (eg a man with a van) please make sure they have a license and are officially registered. Too many dodgy people offer a cheap rubbish disposal service on facebook and just flytip. You are liable for their flytipping.

This gov website tells you who has a license Waste carriers, brokers and dealers environment.data.gov.uk/public-register/view/search-waste-carriers-brokers

FOR GIVING AWAY AND GETTING HOUSEHOLD STUFF FOR FREE

There's also Ferris - available in app stores. Loads of good stuff on there including furniture, clothing and some appliances.

londonmummy1966 · 26/04/2022 14:24

@stealthninjamum - love the "Rainbow bloody Fairy" - exactly how I felt when a new one came home from school. I'd have paid good money to get them taken away!

Couple of outs, a bag and a book sold in Vinted!

IncessantNameChanger · 26/04/2022 16:44

I’m feeling sentimental about the kids growing up and getting rid of their clothes again. Dad is in her last term of infants and she is my last child. I keep telling myself one has to be the last child to do these things.

out one bra. Almost out - my winter boots. I’m not sure if I should fill a bag with shoes for recycling or just bin them. I feel like I should really take them to the clothes recycling at the tip but not sure it’s worth the trip for just them. A few of my trainers will not survive the summer they are already fit for the bin but I’m not quite ready to buy new ones. I’m attached to my converse as they was all bought in New York. I need a new trip to buy new ones.

stealthninjamum · 26/04/2022 19:11

incessant do you not have any shoe bins near you? We’ve got two quite close to me.

As I’ve been promising for days I tipped out the whole of the top of dd1’s wardrobes. A huge amount of stuff came out. Some board games are going back to the playroom and about 20 other items are either being thrown out / recycled or taken to a charity shop. So we’ve got rid of embroidery, badges, two bags, a poster, a magic set, a music box. This doesn’t include lots of bits of paper that I’ve chucked out and some that are going in her memory box.

i haven’t finished yet, will do the rest before bedtime

Myleakycauldron · 26/04/2022 22:42

Didn't manage to list anything today but did tackle the pan drawer and the crockery - got rid of a few plastic plates that have served their purpose, surplus gu pots, surplus tea towels into recycling and some damaged pans ready to go to the tip.

I also got rid of a handful of crap from DDs bedroom (party bag rubbish really!). I'm not anticipating doing much tomorrow but will check in as I am finding your posts and updates useful and inspiring!

londonmummy1966 · 26/04/2022 22:45

Now that DD2 has gone back to school I can take back my sewing room as she took it over for revision. I have repurposed an old shoe bench with cubby holes into stationery storage and thrown away most of the tatty boxes that sat in the cubbys. The rest have been used to store soft drinks in more tidily than lots of random bottles and cans strewn everywhere. I emptied a few bottles that only had dregs in and they have gone in the recycling. Tomorrow I will tackle the rest of that room as it is nearly finished at long long last.

I also took a bag of old clothes etc to the charity bin at TK Maxx (but came back with 2 new dresses so I'm not sure how much of a win that really was....)
