Hoarder's Anonymous, Part 6

Well, here we are embarking upon part 6 of our epic journey of sorting out our homes.

We are a varied group of likeminded householders that are leading somewhat challenging lives; be that living with too much 'stuff' that we find difficult to deal with, houses that are falling apart (mine included), health issues within the family unit, wider family, or ourselves that makes sorting out our households challenging, to say the least. So...

Anyone and everyone is welcome to join us for support, adding their own ideas to help others out, storage ideas, even tips on actually getting those items out of the house which sounds so simple when you say it. Encouragement abounds here, and we do not criticise. EVER! We even try not to criticise ourselves as it's not helpful to anyone.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, don't know where to start, can't be bothered but really do want to be bothered...think you are lazy, just need to see it in print here...we'll help. We'll virtually fist bump your achievements - small or large, and virtually hug you when the need arises, and if you want a hug, just ask because we are here for you. Here for one another because we get it - the highs and the lows, the art of washing up is sometimes our great achievement of the day, but it's still an achievement.

Welcome to thread #6 of Hoarders Anonymous - Carrying On Sorting It Out

thanks Zing.

How are the woolley hugs going?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 01/07/2021 12:30

I delivered all my squares and blankets 2 weeks ago so just sitting on my laurels now🤣

I'm trying to motivate myself to sort laundry room. it's not easy

DownUdderer · 02/07/2021 11:44

Parents evening! Torture! Over here meeting with the teacher is optional, so I've never had to do it.

I've hoovered under the bed, I have a bag full of recycling and trash from under there. Just one more bit then it'll be spick and span under there.

Nearly filled a small carrier bag with papers to recycle. I am definitely not being ruthless enough as I have kept so many old financial statements, investment updates etc. I never refer to the papers but it just seems wrong to shred them. I’ve recycled a lot of of non-account specific bumf though so it’s a start. I

I really am drowning in paper as the vast amount of EHCP/SEN and medical related admin is overwhelming (I know a lot of others on the thread can relate). If I can manage cull small amounts here and there it will eventually seem less daunting.

Solo · 04/07/2021 00:32

Hi all. I've finally caught up on the thread; you all move so quickly!

Not much happening here. I'm keeping on top of the washing up - mostly, and the laundry is clean but never dealt with, but I had a bit of a relapse with my ME, so been pretty crap for the last week-plus, and I hope it doesn't get any worse, or last too long.

I'll try to keep up with the tread.

My study the utility and the bathrooms remain quite clean. and the patio and front garden are "good"
Other clutter is still rampaging though...it's becoming a bit of a mental block. I just have to take courage in my hands when I'm feeling "happy" and a bucket of soapy water and start "somewhere".
Perhaps the front door which is filthy and dusty and front porch paintwork pipes, today.
Not cooked anything but boring things in ages....DH is the only person showing an interest in food prep atm.
Will read thread to update myself...
Clean clothes are good Solo, as I soon find out when I have none (which was recently) tbh laundry is so frustratingly groundhog Day isn't it

Nettleskeins · 04/07/2021 10:28

Miaowse, I really empathise on the SEN paperwork. I have three bulging box files for just one child. And not even "memorabilia"...horrid official things And then there is stuff in emails I never downloaded (which I know is missing part of paper trail). My only comfort to you is that in the end it is just paper, and if you can just allocate a space to it, your child's life and activities will take up a "better" and more fruitful space in your house and mind than these wretched boxes of bureaucratic haggling. It isn't forever. DS is at university now. The boxes are still there but they have no "hold" over me. I keep them in case they help someone else.

Nettleskeins · 04/07/2021 10:33

DS is just loving the Euros and his favourite team has got into premier League so football sticker albums and brochures are his favourite clutter.
He rang from uni to say he had managed to put a big box of vinyl and coats into storage for next year so he isn't bringing it back home on train (gulp)...I'm really proud that he is so organised despite being so "untidy" superficially. He is beginning to understand that "things "can stress you and they are best tested as servants not masters.

Nettleskeins · 04/07/2021 10:35

The football sticker albums being of interest from when he was young...he doesn't do them now of course Shock he's reading serious political tomes

Miaowse · 04/07/2021 13:19

Thanks Nettleskeins Flowers

I typed out a long self-indulgent reply but then deleted it. The shorter version is that at present this paperwork is heavily loaded with feelings of guilt, sadness and frustration so when faced with anything similar I freeze and it all seems completely overwhelming.

Nettleskeins · 04/07/2021 14:22

How is Ds at present, regardless of paperwork?

Nettleskeins · 04/07/2021 14:24

I've done the washing up and enjoyed it (our DW has been broken for a week) I'm finding soapy water v tgerapeutic

Miaowse · 04/07/2021 15:39

We’re muddling along - lots of ups and downs but fortunately the school placement is a good fit overall, so I should count my blessings rather than grumble.

The garden is definitely in need of attention, but it’s been too wet. My lovely rose has not been quite so lovely this year - googling the problem suggests it’s flower balling.

Will you fix/replace the DW or do you find you’re managing well without it?

Hope everyone else is getting on well. I’m reading another book that will probably end up in the donation box.

Nettleskeins · 04/07/2021 16:02

In the short-term I love being without it but DH loves it, so I will have to call out an engineer. ATM I cannot find any trace of model number on it so that's wasted a few days

Nettleskeins · 04/07/2021 16:11

I read back and you lot have made me laugh Grin
Hexagonal quilting templates and screws and "intricate "non allergenic/allergenic cooking, bay leaves and non functioning Spiderman cups!! I love the idea of a functioning Spiderman cup btw

I quite like the high seriousness of parents meetings (pomp) but utterly emotionally draining tbh.

Nettleskeins · 04/07/2021 16:12

Yes, the roses were incredible last year, this year has been better for the 🍒. Ate lots this morning, and rasberries

Miaowse · 04/07/2021 16:34

Oh the Spider-Man cup may have been one of my posts. It was functional but a stupid design. It had a plastic straw embedded in the lid so there was no way to seal it and very tricky to clean the straw.

BlackeyedSusan · 04/07/2021 21:09

Also drowning in paperwork.

Well done on clean clothes and clean pots solo. Sorry to read about the ME relapse

I've done nothing today.(interpreted as I did not do the thing I planned)
Nothing includes:
Breakfast, lunch, snacks drinks for dc2
Cuddles and thunderstorm monitoring for dc1
Getting baked bean juice out of the incredibly expensive new keyboard
Cleaning: bath
All tiles to the ceiling
Shower and pipes ( no screen)
Basin
Two toothbrushes and four toothpastes
Part of the window sil
Exposed top of table and big chest top
Toilet
Back of bathroom door
Chest of plastic drawers
Top of a cabinet which is doing duty as a floor standing bog roll holder.
(After a flushing blocked loo with lid up incident)

Most of the above was on the list to do anyway. The only extra were the toothbrushes etc.

Dismantled chest of plastic drawers cleaned, sorted and put back together.

Unblocking basin
Dismantling the tower of empty bottles. (Explains the repeated noises of falling bottles when ds was in the shower earlier this week)
Put dry pots away ( including sorting out the cupboard when stuff behind collapsed into the bowl space)
Putting on a load of washing
Putting coat and blazer on door with sleeves turned the right way.
Last minute check on pe kit which should have been done on Friday.
Packed trainers for PE.

Yep definitely nothing. Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 04/07/2021 21:13

Pe kit was ok. No incredibly embarrassing phone calls to school to confess a parenting failure and please can he borrow a top.

DownUdderer · 05/07/2021 10:03

I managed to do laundry today, last week I hardly did any at all. The longer I left it the more daunting it became. I'm catching up.

I sawed up a small tree stump today. It took quite a long time, it wasn't exactly essential work but I just needed to do something to keep busy. I listened to a podcast and sawed, it felt good!

I'm waiting to hear if lockdown will end or if it'll be extended.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/07/2021 11:40

in the mean time, we are stopping nearly all measures to reduce spread while cases are rising etc.....

I think they are relying solely on the vaccine efficiency.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/07/2021 11:42

well done down.

I have put up the laundry from yesterday. dumped the dry stuff and a book anbd some medals (the ones you get for turning up when you are really little) on dd's bed.

I am getting pissed off witth ds's super whizzy new keyboard as it is very sensitive and you get lots of random letters you do not want just by brsushing over the top of them .

Nettleskeins · 06/07/2021 13:51

Ds2 is back from uni. I'm hiring him to help with chores. He went and bought paint samples for me by bus and also is "doing sorting" (of his own stuff alas). Still it is better than him lying in bed till midday whichaked me soon badtemprrrrd. Last night we watched Maleficent 2 followed by art history of BBC 4. DS didn't know who Calvin was despite doing history at uni.
So, life continues.
Lots of laundry, and dishwashing. Very mindful I find.Blush

Nettleskeins · 06/07/2021 13:52

Oh dear lots of auto correct there...
