Fledglings prepare to fly their lockdown nests and jump into July - join us for the July FlyLady thread

Welcome all fledglings, newbies and lurkers to the July 2020 flylady thread, where we try and follow flylady’s system to keep our homes in order and our lives organised. We are a friendly bunch and like a bit of a natter, amongst posting our ‘To Do’ lists for accountability and celebrating our ‘Ta Da’ lists no matter how long or short. No fledgling is left behind, just jump in and join us wherever you are at - whether you are a lazy slattern living in chaos or a fully certified domestic goddess wanting to keep up the motivation. Most of us flit between the two depending on the day. The threads tends to be a supportive corner of MN, and we readily provide listening ears for woes and rants when needed.

Flylady is a system based around morning and evening routines, with babysteps to get you started and a daily focus, such as planning and family fun day. There’s a weekly home blessing (or ‘bleurgh’ as we prefer) which is a basic clean to keep the house ticking over, with short bursts of decluttering or deeper cleaning in weekly zones once you are ready. Flylady also suggests short missions each day. Feel free to adapt the system to make it fit in with your life.

Link to the launchpad is here (I hope) and the baby steps are here. From the launchpad I like the ‘flight plan’ for a reminder of the routines, and ‘sneak peek of the week’ for a list of the week‘a missions. You can sign up for emails, but be warned, you will need to regularly declutter your inbox!

As thread leader for July I have taken possession of the thread pointy stick —> for anyone in need of a sharp prod of motivation, but I’ve also set up a chilled quiet naughty corner, complete with comfortable day beds, a gentle sea breeze, and unlimited fruit platters, ice creams and cocktails to any fledgling who is in need of rest and recuperation or is just on strike. No partners or children allowed.

I’ll also try and keep the ‘keep calm corner’ (KCC) going. Originally introduced by our lovely SC, it’s a little daily dose of respite we’ve been using to help us get through these strange times.

I’ll do my best to keep us all motivated and flying throughout July. On work days I may appear with the larks, or not crawl in until the end of the day so apologies in advance if I’m late with links.

We start tomorrow in zone 1 (hall, porch, dining room). Here’s the missions. Habit of the month is ‘swish and swipe’ which is a daily 2 minute wipe of our toilets and sinks. Tomorrow is anti-procrastination day where we tackle those tasks we’ve been putting off.

Anyway, enough waffle, July we are coming for you! shortly, I’m just checking the naughty corner is ready

I've never seen most of these films Blush. My family were not great film watchers and I've never really got into the film habit much as an adult either. I probably watch about half a dozen a year max. I saw Pirates of the Caribbean for the first time last week.

Bower - I love your baking cupboard. We are thinking of getting the kitchen done next year so I'm taking notes.

Bowerbird5 · 25/07/2020 23:53

ED I love it too. The double drawer underneath is for all the baking things too and my digital scales. He designed it for me but it was similar to a cupboard in the show room. He had already done two designs but then included this and space for the Everhot. No charge. The shelves can be moved as the cupboards have slots for lots of combinations. The bottom cupboard hold less used casseroles etc the processor, bullet etc The mixer is plugged in and I just slide it forward as there is a double socket inside.
I will photograph the magic cupboard tomorrow.

Merry did you know that you can buy cuffs. They used to have them on one of the market stalls.

Stilllivinginazoo · 26/07/2020 05:23

bower that's a fab baking cupboard❤️❤️❤️❤️

HungryHazelEyes · 26/07/2020 06:28

Oooh I love a lot of the movies that have been mentioned- Pirates of the Caribbean (all of them), Star Wars, Harry Potter but a favourite in our house is The Pacifier. Can't go wrong with some Vin Diesel eye candy! Growing up I loved watching Mrs Doubtfire and Hook. Someone mentioned Turner and Hooch, I also loved that although sad to say I can't remember it as it's been so long since I've seen it 😢

Ta Das:

Friday

🦊 Swept patio at in-laws house as I was there for lunch.

🦊 DW loaded and turned on.

Saturday

🍹 Bleached bathroom.

🍹 Scrubbed bathroom floor.

🍹 Grocery pickup.

🍹 Put stuff back in camper (coolers and things that needed to be washed after camping like my kettle)

🍹 Made dinner for in-laws including SIL.

🍹 Arranged flowers I ordered in grocery pickup. I love ordering them that way as usually they have to change what's ordered so it's a surprise, and usually more expensive. They don't charge extra for substitutions so I pay the lesser amount. I love it!

I did have a horrible surprise tonight when I sat on my couch. My recliner broke 😢 the handle snapped off. DH will take a look at it to fix it (he's very handy) but in the meantime I have no recliner. It's sad, especially as the princess dog doesn't like to share space so I have somewhere to put my feet!

DS had a friend over this afternoon, they played in the pool and he stayed for dinner tonight. They haven't seen each other since March, when school was done for lockdown. It was good for both of them. They play on xbox every day with headsets, but doing something in person is always best.

It was a good day today. Nothing really planned for tomorrow either, it's a good weekend!

bower I absolutely LOVE your cabinets. I love to have things hidden, but still easy to access.

I had a look at Ikea kitchens yesterday and now I am getting kitchen adverts popping up everywhere. Our kitchen was put in by the previous owners about 20 years ago and although it hasn't particularly dated it is shabby now, the counter and some of the doors are damaged, we need new lighting and flooring and the wall tiles need to go, it's hard trying to keep them clean. The basic layout is good though, wouldn't change it too much. Sadly not sure if we'd have space for a dedicated baking cupboard but I can dream.

Morning all.

To anyone jealous of my baking cupboard( cupboard love) It was thirty two years since I had had a new kitchen and that one was never finished. It had the base units and two shelves on each side which are trendy now. I love it every day. I must say I love the pan drawers either side of the stove. The ones nearest the baking cupboard house

  1. Cutlery 2. Baking tins ( most of them) scone cutters, individual cake pans, grater. 3.Miscellaneous including sieves, baking trays, rack,

The one on the other side has 1.magic paper for Everhot, foil, waxed paper, freezer clips etc 2. New pans for hot plate or induction 3. Old Prestige pans which work on hot plate. One new sauté pan.

I researched lots of kitchens by looking at magazines. I did stick to my design choice of plain shaker style. I also wanted a butler sink. The original is under the out side tap in the garden. I also looked on Pinterest. Our kitchen had a few difficult areas which is why we went with a bespoke, local firm in the end and he came up with some amazing solutions like the window where the sill was lower than the worktop and had thick spider webs down there. He used a large piece of quartzite and went right into the sill from behind the sink and taps.

Bowerbird5 · 26/07/2020 09:24

That is some plan Meg. I do have Sundays as a day of rest now. So when the kids have left the nest you will be able to do that too.

I usually go to Mass( streaming now) then prepare lunch which might be Sunday Dinner or a light lunch and we go out or we go out and have something to eat later and walk first. Otherwise we garden and read in summer or stoke up the fire and watch a film in winter. Sometimes I go to BF and help her make tea for all her family fourteen in total now and me. It is busy but fun.

DH is going walking so I have day to myself. I will watch Mass somewhere. Have reheated pizza. Ah maybe make jam as I need to do that. Make slow cooked lamb shanks might try new recipe that I found in magazine. Make pudding. Read my book.

MrsTidyHouse · 26/07/2020 11:49

Yesterday I finally got the feeling that I have a routine that works. I wrote a detailed to-do list, and wrote a corresponding ta-da list throughout the day. I have always had a tendency to slump mid-afternoon, and liven up again in the evening. Need to work on this, so that I do more in the afternoon and give my full attention to LOs after school.

I’m hiding out in the naughty corner today. Lack of motivation has segued into really low mood. Not really sure why, although I definitely feel like there is too much to do, and to handle, and to decide on at the moment - a hazard of life approaching normality I guess. There will likely be a big to do list when I’m ready for it Hmm but that time is definitely not now!

As you were folks 😳

Stilllivinginazoo · 26/07/2020 15:27

Meg yes to all of those, and yes to the stereotyping we no longer find acceptable in so many cases.
Zoolets love the good life series which hasn't aged too bad,and keeping up appearances/vicar of dibley.they are fond of carry on filmsbut they query some of the "humour" in later ones

meg finer points of obscure bits of canon lore oh yes!

I don't object to watching SW, and I quite enjoyed Mandalorian, but I've no burning desire to, for eg, watch the whole of The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi which I haven't actually done gah I just realised in my earlier post I said film 6 when I really meant film 3 this is such a stupid universe

I did think Rogue One was good. (Then again, I enjoyed JarJar so what do I know. I like Comic Sans too.)

Hi all
Still loving the film chat. Thank you all for reminding me of those classics.
Jigolo Short Circuit was a favourite in our house when I was growing up. It's does shed new light on a lot of older films with their portrayal of other cultures and ethnicities. I have to explain a lot to 15 year old DS that things were different and not in a good way when we watch films like James Bond (cringe).
Lane cyber hug to you. Take it easy on yourself and stuff the housework. Flowers
I am finding myself a bit more focused and productive since revisiting Fly lady. However, I have also realised that I need to conserve energy with a baby and not be up at 11:30 putting on a load of washing for the morning.
Going to work on what I can.
The boodwa is definitely looking a bit less aaaaaaaargh.
Tomorrow new room. Grin

KTCluck · 26/07/2020 19:43

Evening everyone. . We had a brilliant weekend. Very strange being out in town, but the places we visited were all very well organised and everyone seemed to be respecting social distancing. Fantastic food was consumed as well as too much wine Blush.

We got home just before lunch which was beef and trimmings delivered by DM when she returned DD (who had not missed us in the slightest). We then had a lovely long walk with DD this afternoon followed by an easy tea of sandwiches. She’s now flat out 🙌🏻 Early night for me!

I did manage some ta das today by some miracle:
✅ overnight bag unpacked and everything put away
✅ LOL
✅ DW emptied and today’s few dishes in
✅ overnight oats and tomorrow’s lunch prepped
✅ pile of ironing done and put away, tomorrow’s clothes laid out for me and DD, uniform packed and nursery bag packed.

Zoo your plants are lovely! Hope period is easing a bit Cake

Bower the baking cupboard is fab, I’m very envious and I’m wondering if I could squeeze one in somewhere I can’t

Lane hope you’re feeling a bit better and have had an easy day.

Glad you’re feeling a bit more in control Tidy. The routines really help me with that too. It’s great when you crack what works for you and they start to become automatic.

Waves to Foxes, Chic, Merry, ED, SC, That, AWOL, Meg, Hazel, Lisette, Too and Princes

I hope you’re all feeling suitably renewed in the spirit department and ready to tackle a new week. It’s zone 5 (living room) from tomorrow, and apparently zone 1 at the end of the week although Monday-Friday’s missions are all in zone 5 and I thought zone work wasn’t a thing at the weekend?Confused. I need to vac under the sofas at some point as there seems to be a new cat being formed under there Blush. Home bleurgh seems to have come around again somehow too.

So pleased you had a nice weekend KT and that you will get a nice evening tonight Smile.

I took the girls to the cinema this week and we had such a lovely time. Really well organised with lots of cleaning and hand gel etc. Electronic tickets and easy to social distance. Everyone in masks until you get to your seats. Was so nice to do something normal. Especially as my kids are now old enough that I get to sit and RELAX for the duration of the film Grin.

In other news, my difficult parents have had some kind of temporary personality transplant with the pandemic. Both very understanding of the restrictions, have not tried to visit (live far away) and understood when I said we were struggling with zoom. Today on the phone with my mum she actually uttered the words ‘you only live once’, ‘live a little’ and ‘I’m glad you decorated with bright colours as life is miserable enough’ Grin. Who are you and what have you done with my parents Confused?

TooStressyTooMessy · 26/07/2020 20:26

This all relates to us ordering a new sofa which is by far the most exciting thing that has happened this week Grin.

Bower, your kitchen sounds amazing.

Hazel I love a recliner chair. Hope you manage to get yours fixed.

Big wing flaps to everyone.

Lovely start again today, listening to Sunday morning radio programmes while tidying horrendous front garden. Then daily stuff in the house, lots of relaxing, and a bit of shredding and recycling of DS's discards.

Shattered by 5pm, went to bed and slept! Then planned for tomorrow, which will include forty winks in the afternoon :-) (Can't work emojis)

Lisette1940 · 26/07/2020 23:50

Glad to hear your parents have reformed stressy😊

Am salivating at Bower's baking cupboard 🤩

Lane sorry to hear you had a low day 💐. Don't be hard on yourself.

Back at work tomorrow and thanks to KT I can see it's zone 5 initially. Did a quick swish and swipe tonight.

Kitchen is clean but need to tidy shoe rack tomorrow. Setting alarm now fledglings ⏰🌌🌃😴🛌💤

We’ve now had our week of nothingness and it feels like we should be getting back on track a bit, which makes me want to add a few more blankets to the naughty corner!!! But I also don’t want the rest of the holidays to pass by with nothing to show for it.
