Today sounds easy enough. I'm going out for a meal tonight as a late birthday treat with some friends

I tend to do big meals and mainly prepare them at lunchtime, my slow cooker is a godsend and also my two love casaroles, lasagne etc, so I make extra and freeze it.

I also have a steamer on a timer, so if we are out I will pop in a chicken breast and veg and set it to be ready at our return.

It is much easier in the winter. I have found menu planning a god send. Chilli, mince and dumplings with veg, cauli cheese, pasta, lasagne, chicken broth.

saying that tonight they are having frozen fish and oven chips with peas from the garden.

SlightlyMadSweden · 21/09/2007 17:12

I have just stuck some sausage and veg (and a slice of thumb ) in the oven with a tin of tomatoes & gravey about 3hrs ago. Just put some potatoes & veg on....

DD3 starting to run a temp ...I do hope she hasn't got this virus me and DTD1 have it is horrid, horrid, horrid....I can't remember the time I felt this bad....

I havn't put the washing in I should have either as it is chucking it down here and I can't be bothered to go outside (my WM is in garage)

BigBeeristheBigBeer · 21/09/2007 17:35

shame there aren't "cooking babysteps".

SMS here's hoping your DD3 isn't getting poorly too. If you're feeling ill yourself you need time to rest and recover.

winemakesmummyclever · 21/09/2007 17:37

Am very hungry with all of you guys talking about cooking. Not quite sure why though as have just seen of the last of the packet of Anzac biscuits .

Got some chicken out for tea earlier than I am going to throw unceremoniously into the oven. Dh has texted and said he won't be home until gone 8, so plenty of time to cook (and sample some wine once ds is in bed ).

Madhouse - so slow cookers are good then? Have often thought about getting one, but remember my mum producing some hideous things from hers when I was a child. Which one do you have, is it any good, and what kind of things can you cook in it?

TheMadHouse · 21/09/2007 17:47

I have a cheep bush one, just make sure the pot can go in the dishwasher. I do all sorts and also use it for warming up pre cooked stuff.

Stews, never need to add gravey just water or stock. Beef cas, saugage cas, chicken broth with the leftover sunday roast. Just add meat, browned if you want with a load of chopped up veg (whatever you have) cover with stock or water. I often also add lentils or split peas etc.

Chicken with peppers and onions and seasonall (they now do a no salt version).

Meatballs in pasata.
Mince, onions, peas and carrots and sweet potatoes.
Chilli

You name it, I nthink you can even get slow cooker receipe books

winemakesmummyclever · 21/09/2007 19:01

Thanks Madhouse. I may just have to invest in one this weekend. Can you put dumplings in it or do you have to make them separately? Not quite sure why I'm asking this as have never made them in my life. Probably the thought of tasty casseroles .

FunkyGlassSlipper · 21/09/2007 20:09

Ihslow cooker and just cant get the hang of it. DH thinks I should get rid but I'm determined to make something nice in it so easy recipes welcome I am a crap cook.

TheMadHouse · 21/09/2007 21:26

I tend to cheat with Dumps. The boys like them soft so I make them in the microwave, although you can do them adnd them just transfer your pot without lid to the oven to crisp them off.

I am lazy just add all the ingredients and leave - LOL

BigBeeristheBigBeer · 21/09/2007 22:11

at soft dumps in the microwave. Ew.

babypowder · 21/09/2007 22:24

I removed my slow cooker from my worktop as part of a mission last week, which shows how often I use it I find that everything I cook in it tastes the same - please give me some fab ideas that will change my mind!

I managed to iron all the bed linen for the spare bed today (its the only bed linen I iron). Duvet covers and fitted sheets are a nightmare. I know that many people iron all of their sheets and things. There must be a technique I don't know!
