Hello all!

Thank you for joining us, please note if we seem cliquey it’s only because it’s a long running thread - everyone really is welcome!

Welcome to (probably) the most bizarre Flylady thread yet... in which we are attempting to impose/maintain some kind of order in our homes, while also many of us are adjusting to working from home and homeschooling the kids for the first time too! Not to mention the anxiety around health and accessing food!

Of course, normally the opening post would talk about banishing CHAOS - Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome - but now we aren’t allowed anyone over anyway :o so, let’s just try and make our homes nicer FOR US. We are spending more time than ever in them, so let’s make them really wonderful places to be, our own safe little nests for our families.

Flylady routines might just help us get through this crazy time, by giving us a little structure to work from when all else is unpredictable - but as usual there is no right or wrong here. All of us follow it only to the extent it helps us - we can take ideas and make them work for us. And the key principle is, YOU ARE NEVER BEHIND. I feel like that is even more evident now, with so many of these outside pressures and commitments suddenly gone, and frankly the days rolling into one!

This is potentially a great time to declutter. Of course, Flylady suggests 15 minutes a day - but perhaps in these unprecedented times we will all do more! But we are all busy getting into our own routines now that school is out, and work too for many, and we’ve lost a lot of the outside structure to our lives. There’s no right or wrong here, we just have to try and adapt.

Links wise, I’ll just post the launch pad, and will add reminders about zones too. If anyone has Flying questions, please ask!

Star The Keep Calm Corner Star
The lovely SC came up with the brilliant idea of the Keep Calm Corner last month - this is a daily post with things to make us happy! I figured each monthly host can make this their own, and I’m a little worried my taste in art and music would not be calming to most Blush:o so for this month, the KCC will consist of:
Star Some memes - either funny (we all need a laugh! Warning though - some will likely be unsavoury :o) or thought provoking/relaxation based. Do PM me (here or FB) if you have any you want to add!
Star A daily “ice breaker” type question - obviously answering these is entirely optional, and don’t say anything that will out you, but if you want to join in and create some extra conversations on the thread then treatment, we can all get to know each other better! Again, if you think of any questions please PM!

Thank you for settling in, and of course thank you to SC for making March such a lovely thread. Thanks And lastly, a huge thank you also to our key worker Fledglings, who are doing an incredible job of keeping things running! Thanks

It's not massive Bower but not tiny either, about 20x5m (terraced house). I have a small allotment about half a mile away too, I've alway liked gardening. Thinking about it we may have lost our periwinkle as we replaced the fence on that side of the garden last year and dug out a load of stuff to clear the way for it. Since I got the allotment about 5 years ago the garden has been left to it's own devices barring lawn mowing and pruning / bramble removal, we have been here 20 years so it was established. However we took out quite a bit for the fence work so now I have more empty bed to experiment with again, good timing.

Fluffiest · 02/04/2020 08:39

ED love the photo! I'm very cat broody right now.

We have primroses in our garden too, they spring up around the base of a lime tree and look lovely. We also have daffodils that are scattered here and there over the lawn. Previous owners must have planted them. I like that when I look out I can see a lot of flashes of yellow - it's very cheerful!

I've took a screenshot of the detailed cleaning list for zone 1 so I'm going to give that a go today.

It's looking like its going to be a rainy day today, so I need to think of some activities to keep DD happy. I'm missing nursery a lot!

Stilllivinginazoo · 02/04/2020 08:46

Stilllivinginazoo · 02/04/2020 08:47

Xposts fluffy
Pace yourself lovely
You have a list, but do you need to do everything on it today?

Stilllivinginazoo · 02/04/2020 08:54

Ds word of the day
Sturtful - contentious or controversial

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 02/04/2020 08:56

Well I've been up since 4 😴. I've been falling asleep on the sofa every night and then ending up there for the night. I was determined last night I'd go to bed, so I did. But DH has been doing work in there and obviously hasn't cleaned up the dust very well. I'm allergic to dust so by 4am I got so sick of going backwards and forwards to the bathroom to sort my streaming nose and eyes that I just got up. Sat and messed on my phone and watched Robin Hood and Winnie the Pooh (I'm such a child) then at 7am I decided I could make a reasonable amount of noise so I started cleaning.

Polished H/S/L
Polished sitting room
Cleaned windows in sitting room
Cleaned dining table and chairs
Pulled furniture out and swept living room
Swept H/S/L

I'm now making apple and cinnamon pancakes for breakfast while the DC read then we'll do PE with Joe and get cracking with school work. Getting up before everyone else may be the future plan for cleaning although maybe not 4am 🤣

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 02/04/2020 09:06

Morning! Lovely picture, ED .One of my primroses has escaped and is running away (hope this will let me attach the photo!). Please excuse the state of the "lawn", it's the effect of small boys and dogs, and I'm choosing to be delighted DS3 feels safe enough to run about in the garden!

Brilliant word there, zoo. Fluffiest, don't go too fast and burn out! That's the point of "you are not behind".

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 02/04/2020 09:07

No picture. Try again!

KTCluck · 02/04/2020 09:24

Thanks Bower I like geraniums so that may be the way I go.

I tend to do little bursts of the detail cleaning lists Fluffiest. 15 minutes, set the timer. Cup of tea when done. Here’s one of my girls to feed your cat broodiness.

Fab word Zoo. I’m also feeling in need of routine. Dh and I sort of made one but we aren’t succeeding so far.

We3 ouch to 4am rising, but at least you gotten some peace and quiet and have been productive. I woke at 7 and DD has been like a limpet ever since so not much achieved.

Ta da:
✅ LOL
✅ clean laundry carried upstairs
✅ fried egg sandwiches constructed and demolished.
✅ DD de-yolked.
✅ attempted to stop weekly upload to tax free childcare account (DH paid weekly but gone down to 80%, and nursery fees are waived although they’ve said donations are welcome so will pay something to make sure they reopen). Took ages to log on to online banking properly as you can’t adjust standing orders from the app. Faffed on generating transaction code. Got all the way through to find that it had failed as the payment is already pending Hmm. Might have been useful if that message came up as soon as I clicked on amend this transaction!

Currently all on the sofas with the quilts. I’m feeling a lazy morning on the agenda.

ChicCroissant · 02/04/2020 09:34

Morning! Another sleep in for me, came downstairs around 9.00am and DD immediately jumped from her chair to get dressed and start school - I didn't say anything about it, quite the opposite but she'd been sitting happily with DH for a bit, so you can spot the disciplinarian in the household! I told her not to rush but she's working in the corner again now.

Have run out of dishwasher salt. That's an essential to me, so I'll be getting some today! Already had a list going, so will check my loose meal plan for the next few days and get anything else we need as well as posting a birthday card while I am out.

Went for a walk last night which was nice, even the motorway near us is quieter than usual - less traffic noise.

It's the round of applause tonight so we'll do that again, and I'm planning to put something in our window for people exercising to look at, I've joined a local group about it. I spotted a few rainbows and bears last night.

Catch you later!

Lisette1940 · 02/04/2020 09:41

A lot of what people have just posted resonates with me. But I have neglected our garden badly. Life just got on top of me. What a beautiful primrose.

I'm starting exercising today. Slow day today. House is in order for once and lunch and dinner planned out.

School work now and more house planning. What day is it today? Thursday so that's errand day. 😜 Not many errands that I can run 🤣

KTCluck · 02/04/2020 09:43

Cross post Willow. Gooseberry ice cream sounds delicious. Your FIL sounds like a character Grin

Chic we have a rainbow in the window. DD and DH are very proud of it.

LaneBoy · 02/04/2020 10:15

Morning all! Sorry I’m late with the links, was trying to sleep off the period pain 🤬 just setting DS up with maths (and the toddler too apparently - “I want my maths in a book” - I’ve found her an old workbook to scribble in!) and will be back after breakfast!

OP posts:
LaneBoy · 02/04/2020 10:44

Launch pad here

Today’s daily focus is Errand Day. Errrrm not exactly practical unless they are truly essential Hmm but I guess some errands could be done by phone?! And obviously things like food shopping and collecting meds!

No other links today, we are still in zone 1, declutter, make your bed, blah blah blah. :)

OP posts:
LaneBoy · 02/04/2020 10:51

☀️☀️☀️ TKCC ☀️☀️☀️

Today’s distracting pictures are:

  • a useful home ed rule found by zoo :o
  • a cartoon that made me giggle yesterday
  • a thought provoking phrase that may be particularly apt right now, as we (hopefully) have a little more opportunity to really discover who we are and what makes us happy

By the way, the quote yesterday “if you’re worried and you can’t sleep, count your blessings instead of sheep” is from a song in the film White Christmas :)

Today’s question(s): What were your favourite toys as a kid? Were there toys you really coveted?

For me it was my cars I guess, I remember playing with them loads and DS/DD2 still play with some of them now as well as newer ones! I also adored Puppy in my Pocket and used to set up massive worlds for them on my bedroom table (more than actually ‘playing’ imaginatively with them to be honest).
What I reeeeeally wanted but didn’t have, was Lego, and wooden train set! Consequently my kids have always had loads of both :o

I did not know that Lane - the White Christmas origin of the quote. I think gratitude is really important.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 02/04/2020 11:19

Morning Lane, hope you can get the period pain under control. It's one thing I don't miss after a hysterectomy!

Further Ta Das
✔ Doorhandles, lightswitches and bannisters disinfected with Milton (I had more left than I thought)
✔ S&S
✔ first LOL - at least one more to do
✔ DD has finished making the Diamond Anniversary card for my Aunt and Uncle, so I need to post that

As to your toys question, Lane. When I was very little, I loved lego and building it from the instructions, repeatedly. I never freebuilt, it felt too dangerous! If it was meant to make a hospital, it made a hospital. I also played schools and houses endless with my teddies and my baby doll. Her brand name was First Love and that was how she was known! In that respect, I suppose it's not surprising I've ended up as Mother of Many, homeschooling Hmm . When I was older, I had Sindy dolls (Barbie was Not Quite Nice, like ITV) but as well as pretty dresses etc I had a tank they rode in. Equal opportunities house, mine! The boy next door was horrified, because "girls can't play with tanks!!" 🤣🤣

The thing I (and both my siblings) were desperate for and never got was a Mr Frosty, which I'm sure was utter crap in real life, but has taken on mythical proportions in family memory Grin .

Sizeablecontours · 02/04/2020 11:29

Good morning Fledglings! Hope everyone is doing ok?

I started writing this early this morning but have been interrupted so many times since that it's probably already out-of-date!

Everyone has certainly been impressively busy and made the most of the 1st day of the month. I am cross with myself because I did no Flying at all after work and just slumped and ate half a bar of chocolate on what was supposed to be my first dieting day. Really pathetic given my current barrage balloon shape Blush.

Lane I am really sorry to hear your dd1 is struggling, bless her. Sad

Givemeacall and Bower I am so sorry about your siblings Sad Sad. It is lovely that you talk about them and they are remembered.

Really beautiful photos of flowers Lane!

And a really gorgeous cat Expletive! What amazing colouring and eyes!

Agree there is nothing better than spring flowers peaking up through the soil to lend an air of cheer!

Expletive it is very good of you to donate the blankets, especially when you have put so much work and effort (and wool!) in to them. I'm sure they are hugely appreciated. And yes, as Zoo says, your cat really knows how to photo bomb Grin

Zoo I hear you, things are sliding a bit here too! (Well I am still doing extended morning baby steps because they're automatic but that's about it.) I really have to become more structured. It's partly because dh doesn't let me know which days I'm needed because he doesn't know, because his work flow is so erratic atm. And partly because CBA! I started off really well, but let everything go a bit last week. Star for second wind achievements and glad the crocheting is still proving therapeutic! Whey hey to comforting dumplings!

KTCluck :
Best plants for windy terrace.
Nine plants for windy gardens. Obviously, hawthorn not really suitable for a plot and don't know if eryngiums need to be in a border, not a pot, but my late ma had great success with them in her windy/coastal garden.
As for roses, you need to know whether they are shrub, standard, climbers, ramblers, floribundas etc as you prune them to type. This is a very simple guide.. This RHS guide to pruning roses might help.
Good luck!

That is such a shame about your friend's wedding and the Portugal trip. All these plans so painstakingly made and anticipated happily, having to be cancelled. Very hard indeed.

Giveme/KTCluck Great lists both of you! Star Star. I had the same dilemma with on-line shopping. Wasn't sure what was for the best? I did order a close family member (child) in UK a birthday present via Amazon yesterday but felt guilty doing that. I had a very nice chat with our post-lady today (really nice person) and she said - over here anyway - they would appreciate it if we only ordered essentials for office as they were struggling with so many personnel off work. So I guess that's my answer. And we are supposed to be economising anyway atm because of the business/uncertainty.

Fluffiest your garden sounds lovely! I hope you are feeling much better today. Bad period pain while chasing a 4 yr old is no fun at all Brew Cake Good luck with making it through today! And congrats to your friend and her new baby Bear!

We3kings thank you very much for recipe! None of us are milk drinkers but I am going to try it with chicken stock! Now I know I can use potato peelings I won't want to waste them!

Bower I love wood anenomes and celandine! Boy do I need to get rid of clothes too. I must have about ten pairs of navy trousers "hanging around" until I fit in to them ... .

Happy hoovering Lisette (if that is not a tautology).

Willow that is so very sad about the on-line funeral Sad. Really hard for your friend and her family. I hope the bubble bath was comforting Flowers

Chic I'm sorry about your bio dad. Flowers
It is very difficult to get teens to come out on walks isn't it? DD replaces me and takes second dog out sometimes but she prefers to run on her own.

Great list Cineraria! Glad the links helpful. That is so lovely about your baby brother arriving at Christmas! I am very envious of you having close family in Madrid. It is one of my all-time favourite cities in Europe and a hidden gem I think. Everyone goes to Barcelona on holiday - and it is fab - but once you get to know Madrid really well (not just the touristy bits) it is seriously impressive and estupendo!!

Hello Strawberrycreamsundae what a lovely post! Don't hesitate to "unlurk" more frequently! Smile Flowers

Not much to report at this end. Dh is working all hours. Hardly see or speak to him tbh. So no change there Grin!

DD seems happy enough and is even doing some school work and exercise! We are watching one episode of "Unacknowledged" together on Netflix per day and working our way through a large jigsaw. And we eat one meal around the table in the evening when dh is able to join us.

Over the next few days we are going to be "setting a scene" in our front window in which a teddy bear will feature Grin. (It's a local on-line initiative for children who are going on walks with their families, they spot and count the bears as they go on daily walks, just to make lockdown a bit more interesting.)

Days are more or less working out as follows give or take several tasks depending on whether I have "proper" work to do or not:
Slightly extended Flying morning routine which includes shining sink, kitchen surfaces, dw, s&s, dog bowls, Dettol daubing, bannisters and downstairs cloak room, two loads laundry start to finish etc etc
Declutter one box a day in the home office.
One session of Leslie Sansome on You Tube.
One dog walk.
One 20 min "puppy" training session on lawn.
One 30 min gardening session.
Clear one area in boudoir of doom, usually about 40 mins.
One 20 min session of paper shredding.
Two e-mails to friends per day.
Two or three phone calls to family and friends per day.
Two episodes of Scott and Bailey in bed at night Grin

Baking and bread machine three times a week.

Haven't started on the proper clothes decluttering yet (as I find that v stressful as tied up with weight) but I do need to introduce that at some point.

It's all a bit samey but it is not exactly hardship. Smile

Mahoosive waves to one and all Flowers! Take care and keep safe!

Stilllivinginazoo · 02/04/2020 12:02

*Venture to shops achieved.massive panic attack but heyho,dd2 and i home,.fridge stuff wiped and away
*Spoke SEN support
*Rang camhs asking callback as dd2 is getting worse

To do
Make lunch
Wipe and put rest shop away

Anyone know if I can take cutting from geraniums?i found one from last year FLOWERING in a quiet little corner!!!!
(And can we online order in plants? Is that essential shopping or is it only in person that matters?
hopes not as I need wool to

Sizeablecontours · 02/04/2020 12:11

x posts

Ta for links and memes Lane how do you pronounce "meme" btw? [Old gimmer emoticon] .

That's a good idea about doing errands by telephone! And I couldn't agree more Willow about period pain. Such a relief since my womb was evicted last year!

Favourite toys: elaborate building block (and anything else we could find: wood offcuts, rulers, paper tubes etc etc) "houses" (more like entire cities really) made with db which housed model horses, toy cars, figures. And an ancient stripey cat (strange when I am such a dog person now) whose pink velvet mouth and paws have rotted away (still have him in a bag somewhere - gaping - must mend!) And lots (and I mean lots and lots and lots) of "woodland" "fairy" houses constructed at bottom of garden with bits of logs, twigs, ivy and tiny pebble paths, etc.

Zoo Love sturtful - your ds is very good at this! (Pls tell him he is improving my scrabble score by the day Smile)

Lisette good luck with exercise!

Oh no Willow that's a bit mad about your fil pulling up flowers as fast as you are planting them! I've come full circle to love foxgloves again but not the plant you want with inquisitive dc around. I have been using Dettox spray and diluted Dettol disinfectant. I gather(same level of knowledge as yourself) that anti-bac won't work with viruses. I think diluted bleach is meant to be better but I have a terrible record of getting it everywhere so I don't used it except in lavs. But I am scrubbing and rinsing everything with hot water too.

Fluffiest I meant to say, about your sibling, it must be a huge adjustment to get your head around, when you know someone so well, and grew up with them in one biological sex and they transition to another - and yet they are the same person - all at the same time. Really difficult to negotiate I imagine. I can understand your medical concerns too. I hope it all works out for you both Flowers

Another gorgeous cat KTCluck I love his coat!

Snap re: window dressing Chic!

Sorry about the broken nights We3kings

Sizeablecontours · 02/04/2020 12:20

Well done for braving the shops Zoodespite the panic! ( I am not looking forward to my next foray at all and we are making things stretch as long as poss.)

So sorry about dd2 Flowers

We don't need anything but our usual garden centre is delivering with a 6-10 day delay. I think if you did a one-off order then that would be acceptable surely? As it qualifies as work for them I suppose?

Do you mean the common red/bright coloured potted type of geranium? (Not the woodland varieties.) If so, then definitely yes, they are never dormant so you can take cuttings from them at any time .

Sizeablecontours · 02/04/2020 12:28

Right, dh is here demanding lunch so I must go and finish it off and serve (veg soup again!).

Leaving you with my own (hopefully calming) furry animal pic. Little Madam/"Puppy" really doesn't care about Covid ... .

Loving the school stomach! Although that is more relevant to me than to DD Blush

Will catch up shortly

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 02/04/2020 12:52

Your Dog is gorgeous SC. I'd love a dog but we barely have enough room for the people in this house ☹️

Childhood toys I remember were an absolutely gorgeous rocking horse and a lovely dolls house. The dolls house was passed down to my sister not sure what happened to the rocking horse. I was also a sindy rather than Barbie girl which used to drive my DM mad as barbie was much easier to find. Also always wanted Mr Frosty. Most kids I knew did and I don't know anyone that actually got one. Probably because they're a load of crap and tbf if my DC wanted one I probably wouldn't get it.

We just had tinned crap for lunch. Have broth in the Sc for dinner. We also made cake in the toastie maker this morning which was a great success.
