Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Hiya giveme :) welcome!

Finally caught up on the last few days. Apologies for absence, couldn’t focus on anything other than FB really! Feeling pretty crap still but at least over the horrible throat/ear bit.

Lisette how is the isolation anxiety?

Apologies for lack of personals I’m still a bit overwhelmed. But just wanted to say I agree totally re not apologising for being in poor form etc. And absolutely no comparing like others have it worse etc - I mean in general TBH but especially in this weird and trying time! I actually think it’s really important that we DO acknowledge all the little disappointments and fears, rather than trying to dismiss them as unimportant. It’s a better example for the kids too I think. 💕

ta da (eek it’s been so long since I did a list that the tick emoji has disappeared off my frequently used page!)
✅helped DD1 with some maths
✅helped DD1 navigate the GCSE options selection page!
✅stayed awake ALL DAY!!! #epicachievement

Sizeablecontours · 25/03/2020 21:35

Welcome to the thread givemeacall.

Have you flown before? Most of the important info is in the op. Any Q's though, don't hesitate to ask (and hope our incessant nattering doesn't put you off Grin).

Welcome givemeacall, good to have you with us. Good luck with the housecleaning, I'm enjoying the good weather for laundry purposes at the moment. Basket still seems full though, mysteriously.

If you are feeling hemmed in, then you can go on a virtual train ride: . One of dh's favourites - it's very calming and soporific - good if you suffer from insomnia!

Here are seven places from famous paintings that you can visit in rl

Starter info for Givemeacall as you haven't flown before ...

The habit for March is the (controversial): getting dressed to shoes. Some of us do, some of us don't!

We are currently in Zone 4 (main bedroom) up until and including the 28th here.

Detailed cleaning list (although you need to declutter first, because you can't clean clutter) is: here.

And today's flight plan to get you going is : here.

Reminders are: here.

Many people just start off with the baby-steps though and step in where you/we are at!

The main tip is not to get overwhelmed. Small steps done consistently will see you through! (Try not to get over-enthusiastic and crash and burn and don't compare your "ta da" list with anyone else's.)

In case you don't know KCC is "Keep Calm Corner"; a new feature of the thread for these troubled times.

Good luck!

SC it shows how bad my concentration is.just realised in boudoir this week AND I've no good excuses anymore to avoid it...

About force myself up(unmotivated) and get basics done before zoolets start waking and then I have no alternative but get my lazy butt in there and DO SOMETHING

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 26/03/2020 06:58

Morning SC, thank you for lovely pictures in the KCC, they are getting to be the highlight of my day.

I've been up since 5.50am, when WillowHound went berserk because DS1 was cooking dinner. We are going to have to have words about that. He's just gone to bed!

Today's plans include scheduled things for me - sewing and my Fiendish Puzzle - an online drumming lesson for DS3 and more bloody kitchen tidying. Harrumph.

We also need to start writing a shopping list and work out when and how we are going to try to shop. We can still feed ourselves but we are running out of things DD can deal with.

The never-ending washing is still never-ending. I am madly jealous of those who can see the bottom of the washing basket. I thought I could yesterday, but it turned out I was wrong.

Hoping to eat sensibly and get some kind of (home) exercise today, but we shall see. Another coffee first, which is usually where it all goes wrong. I need to learn from DS2 who has built himself a workout schedule and is resolutely sticking to it.

🍒🙋 to zoo, givemeacall, ED, KT, Lisette, Lane, Chic, Cineraria, Stressy, That, We3, Hazel, Bower, foxes and everyone else (I will have missed someone, sorry). Hope DHs are helping and DC are being compliant!

Stilllivinginazoo · 26/03/2020 07:40

willow if you can work out how feed with restrictive eating advice please!!
I hate having brave shops daily for bread.dd2 isn't happy/refusing eating much else other than fresh berries which aren't plentiful either.ds like huge amounts also and not impressed lack bananas.lil zoo just leaves what decides isn't eating that day.im pulling my hair out!

TooStressyTooMessy · 26/03/2020 07:46

Welcome givemeacall.

Just about to drag myself out of bed. We all played a board game until late last night so kids still asleep Shock. I’m sure they will be up soon though so going to jump in e shower. 5 more minutes then I will be up...

Thanks for all the links SC

LaneBoy · 26/03/2020 08:08

Sympathies with the restricted eating 😭 we’ve been ok so far but when we run out of pasta...?

Also concerned about getting hold of the veg DS eats, which isn’t much at all. DD is much easier on that front - last time she was in Asda she got very excited that they actually had lettuce in stock! (Yes, DH bought some :o.)

I actually had a decent, if not terribly long, sleep. Not tried standing up yet (legs very wobbly still Hmm). Aim is to sit in the garden later - we have a bench that is a bit of a sun trap if you time it right.

Other aims are: have a bath, detangle my hair Blush, read new policy stuff from therapist and reply about online sessions.

I’m confused about the self isolation rules. I thought Boris has now said it’s 14 days for the person with symptoms as well as the others in the house. Whereas it was 7 before? But either way you have to continue SI if you’re still symptomatic don’t you? It’s hard to tell what is actual virus, what is normal post viral fatigue (which apparently can be far worse with cv, and mimics ME) and what is my own actual ME/fibro flaring up because of whatever virus it was ConfusedHmm)

Lisette1940 · 26/03/2020 08:13

My understanding Lane is that person 1 with symptoms has to si for 7 days and all others in the household for 14. If person 2 develops symptoms on day 13 then they si for 7 days on top to day 20.

LaneBoy · 26/03/2020 09:04

Yes that’s what I’d thought. But then I thought I heard Boris say everyone stays 14 days this time. Either way I won’t be going “out out” yet - if I do go out of the front door it will be to walk a little way, a la Permitted Daily Exercise, and that’s allowed regardless as long as you do the 2 metres thing

LaneBoy · 26/03/2020 09:08

Thank you for reply BTW!

I wish they’d clarify all these things fully. I was reading a thread about whether it’s ok to drive somewhere else to exercise or not, not that is relevant to us anyway without a car, but there should be a blanket yes or no - should the people who CAN go further do so and leave more space for those who can’t, or is it not worth the risk in terms of potential spreading and traffic accidents putting strain on the NHS 🤔

Either way I’m so grateful for the fact we now live near such a lovely park. It’s been really good timing for Cagletini too as she was just getting to the buggy refusal stage so to be able to practice safe walking/holding DH’s hand while there are fuck all cars around has been great (I thought she’d be a bolter but so far she’s doing really well)
