Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Urgh. I am feeling rough. Need to get more sleep in my life!

Ta da

School run and shit
Dentist
Check emails
Wash on
Dryer on
LR1 swept
Washed some pots
Washed and sterilised some bottles

KTCluck · 11/03/2020 20:23

Fab ta da lists Zoo, SC and Willow, I’m sure there were another few impressive ones too.

Foxes I’m absolutely with you on the soft play thing. I’m sure my friends think I’m ridiculous when we go together, but they are quite happy to let their toddler age DC’s roam free whereas I can’t stand not being able to see DD. I’ll happily leave her to it in the toddler bit which is next to where we tend to sit but if she wants to go in the main frame she’s with me.

Brew for you That. Hope you get a better sleep tonight, and hope all struggling fledglings / poorly DC get some respite soon.

Waves to Bower, Hazel, Lane, Expletive, Chic, Too, We3 and I’m sure I’m missing someone very important but can’t scroll back and brain has started to go to sleep. Apologies!

We’ve had a really nice day today. DD has been a star and it was lovely to spend the day with family.

Ta Da:
✅ curry for tea, lunches and breakfasts prepped for tomorrow and Friday
✅ bathroom window and shower screen cleaned, bathroom floor hoovered and mopped
✅ upstairs hoovered and dusted
✅ LOL in dryer
✅ DD’s bedroom tidied again
✅ rest of loose change bottle counted out
✅ trip back to shop for PILs as they have been advised to self-isolate by the GP Shock (for their own protection rather than being potential spreaders). They wanted the essentials - milk, veg, lottery and wine Grin

I’m absolutely shattered now. Glad DH is on kitchen duty!

KTCluck · 11/03/2020 20:27

Tinselette! You popped into my head as soon as I pressed post! Have an extra wave. Hope BP monitoring is all over and done with and ok

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 11/03/2020 20:37

Have reached the end of my day and am locked in the bathroom!

Further Ta Das:
☑️ Dw run, emptied, reloaded after dinner and on again
☑️ Hoovered ground and first floor
☑️ Got the washing off the line and hung up - smells glorious!
☑️ Got the last LOL dried and handed out
☑️ DH cooked tea
☑️ Little window and window sill in the kitchen cleaned and polished
☑️ All stuff on and around said windowsill cleaned and polished
☑️ Moved the microwave from one side of the kitchen to the other, to see if it makes the space work better
☑️ Cleaned kitchen after dinner again
☑️ DS3 bathed and in bed reading.

I have probably done a bit too much today, but I should at least sleep well tonight. 🍒🙋 all round!

Stilllivinginazoo · 12/03/2020 07:52

Morning!!
Busy day at chez zoo.ds has outreach school on,and dd2 and I have a two hour group session at camhs which I really don't feel up to but doesn't come with choices

"D"p has decided he's descending on us todayso will utilise him to get to retail park for new walking boots for D's as he got wet feet the other day and look at soles show he's worn huge holes in them!!

Tada
Cats fed
Wash on
Sort some emails
Online banking
Wash in drier,more in
Wake zoolets
Feed D's and lil zoo
Make lil zoo pack up as has chess club
Littertray and bins empty
Fold dry washing and put away

I really need have that hot shower as I don't think scanky hag is quite the look to take to camhs later...
Right need poke a stick at lil zoo.throars still bad but a got a thermometer yesterday and as she's 35.9 she's going in

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 12/03/2020 07:53

Ooh, coffee and pastries are most welcome, That. I did too much yesterday and will have to take today quietly as I feel shocking and the cough is ramping up again. 🍒🙋 all round!

LaneBoy · 12/03/2020 08:02

I’m definitely leaning more towards panic now Hmm:(

Not done anything so far this morning other than put my jeans in the dryer, need to get going and shower and wake the toddler! Also going to clean chalk dust off the tuff tray and put it behind the sofa ready for later

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 12/03/2020 08:58

I always wanted a tuff tray for messy play but never got round to getting one.

Didn't get much done after work yesterday as spent most of my evening frantically checking the Facebook page for pictures of DS1 on his school trip 🙈

Let DS2 pick a treat because his parents evening was fantastic he's basically gone from being a very capable boy who preferred to play class clown to getting on with his work to actually growing up a bit and cracking on with his work and his teacher was just as shocked as we were at the change in him from the beginning of this year to now. So he chose to watch a film and have a takeaway last night (and he wants a fiver 🤣) so that's what we did.

Managed a S&S, LOL and the ironing this morning and finally washed my manky hair and shaved my gorilla legs. Back on track I hope 🤞

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 12/03/2020 09:12

DS2 is still off school due to the 48 hour rule, although he is conveniently outside that for the careers fayre at 5pm today. The school have advised everyone walks 40 minutes or takes the (rush hour) train to and from the venue, due to lack of parking. I don't know who booked that, but they need remonstrance! This event is expecting DC from 4 academic years over 2 sibling schools - nearly 1500 teenagers, not allowing for any accompanying parents, over 4 hours.

We3 well done to DS2! Hope DS1 is having a lovely time and DS4 has stopped scratching.

Lane, I understand the panic; but we can only prepare as far as possible and keep going, in my view. When my DDad was immunocompromised by auto immune liver disease, his view always was he couldn't hide under the stairs for the rest of his life just in case, and I try to channel that. As parents mothers more than fathers I think we are used to being prepared - don't we usually carry a snack, spare pants, babywipes, calpol etc from the point the baby is born? I am trying to see any Coronavirus preparation as an extension of that or I will go mad .

Zoo, good luck with your busy day. Hope 'D'P redeems himself by being useful and outreach and Camhs are helpful.

SC, thanks for the links.

Right. Ta Da
☑️ DS3 and DD dispatched to school in their various bedrooms (long commute!) 😂

Er... That's it. Must get going I suppose!

Sizeablecontours · 12/03/2020 10:31

Ta da:
carried random glasses, mugs, saucers downstairs
emptied dw and put breakfast things in
dining room table hot spot
s&s
wms emptied and x2 loads hung up
wms x 2 fed again
scrubbed dog bowls
carried laundered and ironed washing upstairs
wiped down kitchen after dd made her packed lunch
watered pots of bulbs
washed down kitchen bin and lid
went with dh to collect car back from garage and pay eye-watering bill

A beautiful bright day here (if a little cold!). The light certainly makes it easier to get up and get going! I am also finding Flying a little easier now I am working more hours as it's more of a contrast ifyswim.

Thanks for much-need carbs That and I hope you are feeling less rough today. Did you see that the Chancellor granted loads of small businesses tax relief yesterday, but left out nurseries, many of whom, as you and Toostressy said are already struggling Shock.

Great lists yesterday Zoo and Willow Star Star but you guys were meant to be resting!! Please, please take it steady both of you and try and fit in some down-time for yourselves today if humanly possible!

Willow Arf at your dcs "long commute" Grin Glad your ds2 has his appetite back and hope he survives the career fayre which sounds like a bit of a bun-fight!

We3kings How old is your eldest? I hope he enjoys his sojourn in the Smoke! And many congrats to your ds2 for doing so well at school! I am always taken by surprise by how long it takes to get back on track after having guests to stay! I only got the half-term holiday guest bed-linen washed and ironed and back in cupboard yesterday. And it takes a while for me to get my "mental" energy back again ifyswim?

Good luck with all the appointments today Zoo the force of the fledglings is with you! Flowers Forgive me, but when you describe your dd2 as being "not one to admit anything other than solid and coping", I can't help thinking that she might be a bit of a chip off the old block! Grin Wink Grin

Seriously though, I hope your dps visit today is not too draining for you.

And thanks, I am trying to add to diy dh's list but he has wind of it and is managing to be rather elusive currently Hmm

Lane well done for getting back to swimming Star and that's outrageous about your dh and the grabby women in Boots Shock

I am having moments of panic too I must admit but in a funny sort of way I think it might all be a bit easier when the virus reaches its peak in our respective locations, because the anticipation of awful things tends to be worse than they are in reality (here's hoping anyway!Confused).

And if the worst happens, such as someone close to us, or ourselves getting seriously ill, I am trying to tell myself that there is no rational point in worrying about that until it actually happens as (a) worrying won't change anything and (b) other than take reasonable measures like hand-washing regularly, there isn't anything we can do about it! (Easier said than done though I know!)

Therefore, fwiw, I am trying to change "worry thought" in to "doing something" such as 1. sew a patch for my quilt (distraction) 2. swab a few door handles with Dettol or similar and prep extra healthy veg for dinner or encourage everyone to take vits (practical prevention) 3. stroke a furry (and then wash my hands again) (calming/ mindfulness/ in the moment thingy) 4. do my Leslie Sansome walking vid every day (endorphins!). You have inspired me with all this sort of thing actually Lane as I have learned a lot from your posts on this thread and all the pro-active steps you have been taking to improve your mental and physical health Flowers. And the way you don't give up Star Star.

I also have to try and make a certified effort to "appear" calm for dd and model good self-calming strategies because she went through a bit of a teen existentialist "crise" about two years ago exacerbated by all the terrorist things that were happening here, plus exam stress, and she was also worried about climate change, antibiotic resistance, pollution, and pandemic, and it all got on top of her a bit, so I don't want her anxious to that extent again. It's a tough world for teens currently Sad Sad

Tinselette I am sorry I left you off the wave list yesterday too! No idea why as (being nosey) I had been meaning to ask you whether having your blood pressure monitored meant that you were still having ongoing adverse effects from that awful virus you had a while back? And are you wondering that perhaps it was something else you had?

Glad you had a lovely family day KTCluck and bravo for helping out PILS. Do you think they could be persuaded to do on-line shopping if the current situation continues?

Well done with the bedroom cleaning Foxes!

Bower thinking of you Flowers

And you too Honu with your caring responsibilities; this current situation must be added stress for you Flowers

Cineraria and Hazel hope you are both ok!

Cherry waves to Chic , Expletive and all other fledglings I've missed!

Sorry that was such a huge essay but the good news is that I won't be back on here until tomorrow morning again Grin Grin

[Go Faugheen the machine!!!! Grin Wink ]

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 12/03/2020 10:37

He's 9 sc. but now he's so far away I feel like I've abandoned a toddler 🤣

Stilllivinginazoo · 12/03/2020 12:01

I've just seen on FB that schools may close at end of the week and have an extended Easter hol to try contain thingsShock
Ireland schools are deffo closing, lots my DD friends online are having lessons online from various parts Europe/u.s.
I pop into Morrison's for lunch items and the panic was tangible.queues to the door

I'm inclined to run with the attitude it's like a type flu and we just have to follow hygiene advice offered and crack on.i like being outside, and believe fresh air is good for us all.fwiw I have a shit immune system but fact DC aren't badly affected statistically calms me considerably.as long as they're ok that's my primary concern
SC has the right idea looking at distraction, prevention and MH calming tactics.this thread will be an invaluable source of comfort to us all as it's so supportive

It still all feels rather surreal, and has me thinking about DD GCSE,dd1 wedding in june(groups of 100+ banned in Ireland)

Remember the last pandemic (Spanish flu) there wasn't the hygiene knowledge, nor healthcare we have now for many
Sending positive calming vibes to all fledglings

Stilllivinginazoo · 12/03/2020 12:04

Forgot to add me tada
Picked up DS shoes(rather fetching blue walking boots)
Acquired lunch items
Check plans with outreach for D's this afternoon

About feed D's (I'm too anxious about camhs to eat,as is dd2,we will eat later)
He leaves 1230,us 1245

ExpletiveDelighted · 12/03/2020 12:33

Definitely a good idea to have some calming strategies lined up at the moment. I'm like so many others, ok one minute, worried the next, a lot of it is fear of the unknown for me. Trying to balance staying calm in front of the DCs with making sure they understand the need to wash hands more etc. I went to Sainsburys this morning and it was fairly quiet, a reasonable amount of loo roll available again.

Tada!

1 x LOL on the line (it's a bright breezy spring day here).
Wiped surfaces with Zoflora on a cloth - I've decided that I will do a quick once over every day before leaving for work - door handles, taps, light switches, kitchen knobs and handles takes about 5 minutes.
Quick Sainsburys shop
Now at work

DD got back from her foreign residential yesterday, I'm glad it wasn't cancelled, everything is so uncertain now but I was a bit unsettled while she was away. Both schools have sent out details of their contingency plans for learning (DS is in gcse year so particularly important).

Bowerbird5 · 12/03/2020 13:20

Hi,
Have caught up on yesterday and today’s news.
Zoo hope it goes well and I agree with you about the eating. You will hopefully enjoy it more lately too.
Lane SC is right you are an inspiration. It helps me too. I have lost all confidence and most self esteem and didn’t have a huge amount of that anyway. So now simple small steps is my way and you often spark an idea for me in achieving this.

Our choir has cancelled. The one thing each week I look forward to. Several reasons for it including premises have withdrawn offer. Still feel sad about it though.

I am starting to worry about it but don’t see many people. GP surgery has anti bac available. I had taken my own though😉

Locally no schools are closed yet including one where two tested positive. Another Secondary returned from a school trip in Italy two to three weeks ago. They suggested self isolation if they wanted and I heard through a friend someone who came back from Venice and isn't self isolating because it was before the announcement. It is worrying that some people are not being considerate of others. It is adding to my anxiety now.

I can’t be bothered today.
I have been looking up stuff. I need some more hens but the place I was going to go to has stopped selling them. There are none nearby. Some in other counties and a few over the border which isn’t far about 25 minutes unless not in the village named.
Need to price a radiator for the bathroom.
Going to try and get some painting done. Need to undercoat the boxed in pipe work.

It was a lovely bright morning and I should have gone out then it has changed now. Colder and looks like rain, sleet or snow. We had hail and sleet yesterday.

Luckily the kitchen is fairly clean and tidy. The floor could do with washing but I will wait a day as builder is back in the morning to plaster walls! So I will do it after he leaves.

To do
One LOL ( I did two loads on Tuesday and ironed it. One yesterday of towels.
Paint boxed pipes.
Might make some biscuits or scones.

15 minute tidy of hot spots in sitting room.

Tinselette1940 · 12/03/2020 15:06

No problem KTCluck I don't mind at all. SC i don't mind you asking at all. They checked my blood pressure when I had the chest infection and it was really high. With me it's white coat syndrome which means it's probably normal anywhere but the doctor's office. Anyway they did the ambulatory monitor and the doctor told me today that it's in the normal range including when I sleep. If I had a problem it would probably be high during the night
It's not related to the chest infection at all. But once they spotted something they followed up in it. Anyway I am officially better.

Catching up on the thread now...

LaneBoy · 12/03/2020 18:29

Aw guys 🙈 thanks for the lovely comments. That’s so kind!

I’m feeling quite good thanks to parents evening going really well. The teachers all seem to really love DD1! She’s getting closer to choosing GCSEs (they start in yr9 here). I do have some extra things to discuss with FSW when she visits tomorrow though as there seems to have been zero communication about her needs Hmm

Need to spend tomorrow morning tidying. Especially the downstairs loo and living room.

DD1 is really achy. I think she might have tonsillitis TBH given her symptoms. Unfortunately she has dance rehearsals both days of the weekend, and after school Monday. She has one dance show next weekend (both days) and both she and DS are in a bigger one in the Easter holidays 😭 I get anxious enough about this stuff as it is - all the faffing with making sure we have the right costumes and arranging transport etc - but with the unknown “will it be cancelled” it’s making me a bit stressed!

Stilllivinginazoo · 12/03/2020 18:36

lane brilliant news parents evening went well.well done DD!!

Camhs session done.i found whole experience highly stressful,as did dd2.she hated us being in seperate rooms for 2hrs.we have 11 more weeks to go.at this point we learned nothing new, hoping there will be some purpose further down the track.ive told her she should be proud that we did it tho!!
DS was v unhappy about today's outreach classes
Lil zoo asked I picked up her cream cheese.i had forgot.huge meltdown.got her after-school snack(hummus and pitta)then took dd2 out to shops leaving D's n lil zoo with dp.came back.ate tuna and rice cakes with a banana.fixed lil zoo hair and dp taken her off to dance class
Finally having bit of a rest

Sizeablecontours · 12/03/2020 20:27

Brill news about parents evening Lane well done dd1! Poor communication not very reassuring though.

Just popping in (in the middle of something else) to say that things very much hotting up on this side of the Channel. France has just closed all nurseries, schools and universities from the beginning of next week. Rumours are that something similar is going to happen here (our equiv of Cobra happening right now) but there is a circular argument going on saying that if schools close, grandparents will be looking after the dc, and gps are most vulnerable group. Obviously if parents begin working from home then this less problematic.

Currently in midst of sorting a mahoosive timetable for our office space. Staff numbers small enough we can timetable it that two staff come in one at a time on a specific morning or afternoon during the week and stay at different ends of the office. Then once they have left, the next two staff come in etc etc. All travel domestic and international travel banned. No client meetings or visitors to office except cleaners. And if any spouse or child of employee has symptoms, then employee must self-isolate for seven days.

Thankfully we do a lot of distance working/hot-desking anyway. We have posters up. Lots of alcohol based hand wash available. Fabric towels and tea towels have been replaced by paper. We have bought six more closed bins, stacks of tissues, Dettol cleaning wipes and PC and laptop cleaning wipes, extra loo roll. Dh is moving to a separate space on the ground floor (sort of an archive/cupboard which houses old bits of carpet and spare office chairs) to keep the show on the road... . Thank heavens our tech was all updated last month or not sure servers could cope ... .

Interesting times ... .

Great forward thinking SC.

Lane I'm so glad the parent- teacher meeting went well.

I cleaned the conservatory using a weak bleach solution as place was a bit musty. I've to wash the low walls and patio doors tomorrow. By Sunday I should be back to normal zone cleaning. Hands are really dry though.

Sizeablecontours · 13/03/2020 00:26

Glad you are finally resting after your stressful day Zoo! Brew

Tinselette Very glad to hear you have totally recovered

Very sorry to hear about the choir Bower and that you are feeling so low. Could you possibly replace it with a Thompson & Morgan order and start pricking out some seedlings perhaps? Gardening is always restful and restorative and gives you something to look forward to.

Zoo plans for our forthcoming extended family wedding have also been disrupted.

Aw We3kings I'm not surprised you missed him then! I thought you were going to say he was 16! Grin Nine is a lovely age [ahhh nostalgic memories ... .]

Agree Expletive it is the uncertainty that is v unsettling. Glad that dd safely back in the nest!

Crikey what a day. Emergency measures have brought in by federal gov here late this evening. All schools, unis, colleges closed as of Monday running in to two-week Easter hols (five weeks in total). Schools will be providing childcare for dc of hcps though. Nurseries staying open. All restaurants, bars, cafes closing. All shops closing at weekends except supermarkets, butchers/bakers/etc and pharmacies. All cultural and sports events including cinemas, theatres, museums, sports arenas, leisure centres closing. Public transport running but we are being asked not to use it unless absolutely necessary.

This is looking very serious indeed Sad Sad
Posting links now as early start in the morning.
G'night all and apol in advance if awol from thread tomorrow as last "normal" day before shut-down midnight tomorrow so lots to do.

Just for general info: we are still in Zone 2 over the weekend and then we start in Zone 3: The Main Bathroom and One Extra Room from 15th to 21st incl.

Weary waves to all fledglings!

DD totally beside herself with delight that schools closing of course. But don't think she fully comprehends seriousness of situation.
