The decluttering on thing a day thread - part 11

We’re still here.

After 10 threads my house still isn't tidy!

So join me and a lovely group of mumsnetters who simply get rid of one thing a day and report back. Gradually we’re developing good habits, reorganising ourselves, often improving our mental health and having friendly chatter along the way.

So newbies are welcome, just check in with your news and join in the general chat about recycling, organisation and housework.

Previous thread here.

ALSO many of us have set a target to get rid of 2020 items this year and will report on that.

@Bunkerlife Flowers hope you are doing ok.

Had my mum staying for a few days so didn’t get as much done but went through a drawer and binned some old phone cases and broken purse and some of my tatty old underwear.. Blush

Reastie · 05/02/2020 14:51

Bunker life so sorry, what awful news.

Stealth I have heard much of this room of doom. The amount it has in it I’m imagining it like Monica from Friends’ hidden cupboard 😂.

Ello my wardrobe is quite capsule but that’s mainly as I still don’t fit back in my pre preg clothes 😭 and refuse to spend much on new clothes in the hope I get back in them! It helps if everything you have roughly colour coordinates eg I tend to have navy things which means I try to avoid buying black or brown things as they often don’t quite match well.

Progress here slow but steady although I may have bought —another— buggy at the week end, but this one takes up less than half the boot space of the other and we are going to put on our old buggy to Freecycle at the week end.

pollyannaperspective · 05/02/2020 16:27

Bunkerlife such a sad time instead of the happy anticipation for all of your family. I hope that you are all able to offer love and support to each other.

Feel like there's less clutter today even though I've been out most of the day so not much achieved at home.
Old kettle is now where I volunteer and the item on Gumtree has someone coming at the weekend.

SandAndSea · 05/02/2020 17:37

I've finally been through my old camera which hasn't worked properly for about 10 years. I've emptied the memory card, copying the photos onto my laptop. DP is insisting on keeping 2 of the cables as he thinks "they'll be useful", but the rest is going out.

Outs:

Camera
Box and packaging
1 cable
1 battery
1 xd card
1 manual
3 discs & envelopes

pollyannaperspective · 05/02/2020 19:31

2 mystery carrier bags from the dumping bedroom tackled when I had DH's attention/input. Outs:
cables and router circa 2010
microphone and cable (will offer to school)
v dead batteries
pens
and a book.

Today I threw out a bag of cat treats so old they had turned to unrecognizable mush Envy < not envy

I also managed to entertain DC with a film for 1.5 hours so rearranged a load of things in the bedroom. The homeless clutter is now consolidated into one under bed storage drawer - does that mean it's no longer homeless? I've brought a bag of stuff downstairs that need a sorting and rehoming downstairs. Binned a large box worth of random stuff (old watch boxes, old phone and boot boxes, hairbands etc). Sold a few things on eBay and took a large bag of stuff to the charity shop - mostly from the car clear out earlier in the week. Phew. Need to do a big furniture rearrange at the weekend to put the cot bed up in the main bedroom as the travel cot doesn't look so good anymore now DC is a bit bigger Blush

gassylady · 05/02/2020 20:40

Sorry to hear that bunkerlife must have been devastating for everyone when all the anticipation of happy times ends so differently.

Welcome to all newcomers - happy decluttering. I took two of the charity bags in to shop this week. Largely kids clothes and DVDs plus old school rucksack.

Several magazines from DHs stash have been read and recycled. So overall steady progress this week.

Bunkerlife · 05/02/2020 21:30

Thank you all for the kind words, we're still waiting for her to be born - the waiting is agonising, cruel, inhuman, heartless and devastating.

210 items recycled 😢

I cant even imagine what your famiky must be going through, bunker Sad

I've been through the bags of things I brought downstairs and put them away, rather than them sitting there for weeks (books, book marks, instructions leaflets and other such bits) and chucked out a small handful of mcdonalds toys from DC's drawer of small stuff, which is about to move upstairs away from small fingers.

SandAndSea · 06/02/2020 01:07

I've been continuing wiping my old laptop and also going through my stash of old phones. (This is all about rescuing photos before getting rid of them all.)

So far, I have 2 phones definitely going out. (With their cables, manuals, packaging etc.)

I've got another 3 phones charging and another 1 to consider getting rid of.

If anyone knows a good charity which I could send them to which would definitely wipe them fully (in case I haven't done it properly) and recycle them in some way, please do let me know.

PickledLilly · 06/02/2020 09:40

We’re in the process of doing up smallest Pickle’s bedroom so the house is in absolute chaos. Plaster is finally dry so I can get in there tomorrow and paint but we’ve still got to hang the radiator, put the floor back down and OH is making him a loft bed (which will then need painting etc) so it’s a slow process but I can’t wait to get him back in his own room and I’m determined to thoroughly sort everything as it goes back in and sort his sister’s room at the same time as currently they’re both sleeping in her room and all his stuff is in there so it’s a mess!

Reastie · 06/02/2020 10:18

Bunkerlife how awful. Thinking of you and your family. Take care. X

Need to reorganise Ds’ bibs and weaning stuff as never found a proper home for it yet. I think if I declutter one of the food cupboards we can sort it. Have ordered those amazing shelf organiser things where you dump stuff into a caddy and pull it out. We have a few and find they make the space work so much better. Technically I’m adding stuff to my house by doing this but in the long run it’ll make things work more efficiently.

Ds is the king of moaning today, think he’s coming down with something, so suspect today won’t be very productive.

Chaosonthehorizon · 06/02/2020 10:57

Bunkerlife, so sorry.

What can I do with old scarves in terms of upcycling/re purposing? I was scarf mad and not sure when I next will be again! Not woolly scarves. Quite often sentimental. Thanks

Keiki · 06/02/2020 11:27

Some kind of quilt, cushion cover or similar Chaos?

Sandandsea, same question here I have 4 old mobiles I need to get rid of.

Em8725 · 06/02/2020 11:28

@Bunkerlife I’m so sorry to hear this, sending you lots of love.

Lots of outs today in the form of setting up my brother in law for his first home. Perfect excuse to get rid of all the spare plates (why we have 20 dinner plates I don’t know!), bowls, cutlery, glasses, etc etc. I’ve sorted out a few huge crates for him.

I’m slowing down as work gets busier but I’m still progressing slowly.

SydneyCarton · 06/02/2020 12:57

Only one out here recently, my old hairdryer which started smelling of burnt plastic at Christmas. Technically I’ve replaced it with a hot air brush but it’s one less thing to have around.

Getting increasingly frustrated with the dining table which has been littered with crap since I don’t know when. Might take advantage of DS having finally succumbed to a nap to set a timer and have a quick blitz

Reastie · 06/02/2020 13:31

Chaos one word:furoshiki.

Bunkerlife · 06/02/2020 13:47

Beautiful baby, born sleeping this morning. We're all heartbroken. It doesn't seem right that normal life is going on around us, food still has to be prepared and eaten, pets still need feeding, bills still need to be paid, decisions about every day life still have to be made.

Life seems so cruel today, it's not my baby but that of a close family member who has dealt with a lot of pain and suffering already I'm not sure she will come back from this.

PickledLilly · 06/02/2020 17:59

I’m so sorry Bunkerlife Sad

SandAndSea · 06/02/2020 18:42

So sorry to read that, Bunker. Flowers

SandAndSea · 06/02/2020 19:03

I've been doing more techy sorting out today. Whilst waiting for my old tech to load etc, I've also been through my desk drawer and have moved and deleted loads of computer files.

Outs:

6629 items from the Recycle Bin. (Almost 8GB!)
1 faulty mobile phone (plus the photos etc on it which I couldn't save).
3 inner rolls from Christmas wrapping paper.
1 satnav user manual - never opened or needed.
1 PC manual - a/a.
1 warranty leaflet.
1 piece of cardboard which came with a software leaflet for no apparent reason.
1 random bag.
1 sticker.

SandAndSea · 07/02/2020 00:01

Another phone out.
Plus another memory card.

I'm emptying the last phone now - the only one I might possibly be able to sell as it still works, though it's pretty old so maybe not. I've been quite shocked at how many I've had to go through as I'm not extravagant when it comes to phones. To be fair though, 3 weren't mine, 2 were second hand and most were used to the end.

I'm currently keeping 3. They're all very basic and could do us a turn in a 'phone emergency'. This might change though.

I am still in need of a phone recycling place if anyone knows of one?
