The decluttering on thing a day thread - part 11

StealthNinjaMum · 19/01/2020 15:12

We’re still here.

After 10 threads my house still isn't tidy!

So join me and a lovely group of mumsnetters who simply get rid of one thing a day and report back. Gradually we’re developing good habits, reorganising ourselves, often improving our mental health and having friendly chatter along the way.

So newbies are welcome, just check in with your news and join in the general chat about recycling, organisation and housework.

ALSO many of us have set a target to get rid of 2020 items this year and will report on that.

Decluttered the car yesterday as it's being traded in on Friday and I'm working all week. As always, I promise I will keep the new car tidy

Got a bag full of stuff ready for the bin after it's emptied today. Worn towel got flung out and I've washed some bath and hand towels ready to hand into local boarding kennel.

Medwaymumoffour · 20/01/2020 17:11

102 out from dd room today. I have no issues with getting rid of the too small stuff now. Maybe it’s like walking on hot coals, the thought of it is the most painful part?

It’s bagged out waiting to go in the car, but it’s as good as gone. It’s mostly headed to my major hospital again. Plus coats for charity shop.

I can walk around and open things now! It still doesn’t fit in its homes but I’m not doing that tomorrow, I’m back on housework so I can keep up to date.

SandAndSea · 20/01/2020 17:23

My outs today are a bit pitiful but as none of them will be replaced, I'm still counting them:

A roll of sellotape (we've still got too many).
A packet of stickers which I've had for years and years.
A load of bubble wrap.
A box.
An ornament - sold for not nearly enough considering the time it all took and the extortionate postage cost.

Medwaymumoffour · 20/01/2020 17:23

suzzi how lovely your dd does her clothes with you. My dd isn’t into skirts or dresses. I haven’t got rid of all of them but I don’t buy them any more. Dd won’t wear any of her school pinafores, but she does wear a school skirt and has come back round to wearing skirts out of school.

I just can’t believe I bought her so many clothes! Now she’s at school she only needs two / three drawers full like her brother! I will scale it down. Just not this week. I might scale back her summer clothes first. She is youngest of four Andy my only girl, hence the angst.

slipperywhensparticus · 20/01/2020 17:29

Dl you count all your outs? I've taken two car fills to the local tip they recycle pretty much everything fortunately so I dont feel too guilty

GlassOfPort · 20/01/2020 17:39

Another newbie here...hi everybody!

I can be fairly ruthless when it comes to decluttering, the problem is my DH isn't on board AT ALL.

He actually likes living in an house full of stuff, whereas I can't find anything and feel we are drowning in tat. I do manage to take the occasional bag to the charity shop, but it's always a struggle.

Do you all have lovely cooperative OHs? If not how did you bring them round?

Vinorosso74 · 20/01/2020 17:59

3 pairs of glasses in the recycling bin at Specsavers.
slippery I'm just going for the one item a day. Some others are going for 2020 items out in 2020!
GlassofPort my DP is a bit of a nightmare around decluttering. He doesn't see a problem so his post fills the letter rack and I have to keep on at him sort through things. It seems to be me who puts things up for sale/for free. He will do a dump run/charity shop drop off if I ask him to but otherwise he would just ignore the stuff in bags.

SandAndSea · 20/01/2020 18:46

slipperywhensparticus - I keep a list as I find it motivating to look back on it. I'm aiming for one a day, or the equivalent. But, so far this year, I'm actually averaging around 5.

Welcome, Glass!

Alkaloise · 20/01/2020 19:19

Another two files' worth of stuff shredded. I really don't need all those old work documents.

Suzie0003 · 20/01/2020 19:56

@medwaymumoffour I'm the same my daughter is the youngest and has 2 older brothers so I longed for her to wear dresses Wink sadly it wasn't to be haha. So out they go!

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 20/01/2020 20:50

6 outs here today - mostly clothing, bringing my total up to 206/2020.

@GlassOfPort I’m lucky in that DH has similar standards to me when it comes to clutter, so he doesn’t hold on to much unnecessary stuff. If only I could get him to get rid of his remaining collection and the boxes of sentimental items he has stashed on top of the wardrobe...

Coldhandscoldheart · 21/01/2020 06:06

Just marking for when I have time/inclination to return!

StealthNinjaMum · 21/01/2020 09:09

slipperywhenspartacus I used to log everything and it was motivating, but I’ve built decluttering into my life now so don’t feel the need. I am at the stage where i’ve Decluttered my whole house but not really finished anything so want to focus on finishing areas / rooms rather than counting items out.

Welcome glassofport my husband liked living in clutter too but as he got used to it I think liked some of the improvements. He even decluttered his wardrobe once without me asking. The thing that really improved things was him moving out! He now lives in a dump and I have a boyfriend who is very tidy, My heart skipped a beat on our first date when he said he was tidy.

Today I am still focusing on my bedroom.

Productive morning actually getting stuff out. I took what I could carry to the charity shop. Got a few more books to go but I couldn't carry everything.
Dead batteries in the recycling tub in Waitrose.

gassylady · 21/01/2020 14:18

Steady progress here. Bags still waiting for chance to get to charity shop. But tip run to get rid of lots of cardboard, metal, batteries and tetra oaks done. Today I’m going to revisit a bedroom cupboard that seems to have refilled - like the magic porridge pot Crown Shock

SandAndSea · 21/01/2020 15:03

Out: The annoying bit of foam from the kitchen compost bin. (It kept falling out.)

I've also set up and plugged in my old laptop to charge it up, in the hope of emptying it so I can get rid of it. The last time I tried to do this, I wasn't able to - it's so old, I've had to get a special gadget to get the files off. I'm hoping for more luck this time. It's got loads of photos on but is otherwise useless and needs to go.

StealthNinjaMum · 21/01/2020 15:14

I have done loads of tidying but only found one item to declutter - a broken picture frame.

I also took four bags of clothes and books to the charity shop.

OP posts:
Vinorosso74 · 21/01/2020 15:24

I've also been tidying today. I got slightly distracted and put 3 things on Freecycle which have interest already so fingers crossed they can go soon.

ememem84 · 21/01/2020 15:26

Ahoy! Just placemarking. Got rid of my gym pants (went see through...) and have opened a load of envelopes and thrown them away.

Bunkerlife · 21/01/2020 20:03

I've returned from my holiday and am incredibly jet lagged but was determined to make a start so I have thrown away some odd socks and a pair of slippers. I have some serious catching up to do and will make a start once I have tackled the unpacking tomorrow.

PickledLilly · 21/01/2020 21:23

Quite a few ins today as it’s my birthday and I went clothes shopping for the first time in absolutely ages but it’s going to force my hand on decluttering my wardrobe or I can’t fit the new stuff in Grin it’s all very practical stuff I’ve bought that I’ll wear loads and will be replacing things that have absolutely had it like my ‘pyjamas’ which consist of a pair of size 12 maternity leggings worn nearly see through with age and massively baggy as I’m a size 10 and my youngest child is three! I team them with a fetching ancient long sleeved t-shirt which belonged to the other half ten or so years ago until he got fat and I pinched it for nightwear. I think those two items definitely need to go now I’ve finally replaced them!

mogloveseggs · 21/01/2020 21:53

Hello!
I'm not doing very good at this decluttering thing Blush
But we did take the clothes to the charity bins at asda tonight so that's a positive.

mogloveseggs · 21/01/2020 21:54

@PickledLilly happy birthday FlowersCakeWine

HungryHazelEyes · 21/01/2020 22:04

I have been burning candles that I have had for years now (I would get them out certain times of the year) I have used up 2 in the last couple of days and getting closer to 3 more being used up. I mostly use plug ins for room fragrances, although have a habit of buying candles when on sale! I will always have some, just in case power goes out - we'll have light, but I really don't need as many as I have.

Momniscient · 21/01/2020 22:07

Hello to the new thread!

Fell off the motivation wagon lately, but: one empty handcream bottle out this morning. Happy regardless, because the Xmas decorations went into the loft this evening, and so downstairs as a whole looks so much less cluttered. Bits of tidying away generally so we've got little patches of floor in view again. Makes such a difference. I'm also counting a tiny bottle of prosecco as an out even though it's consumable, as it's been in our "regifting" stash for a while and therefore cluttering up my study. We so rarely need token gifts that it gets passed over, so there we are. Hic.

I'm not really counting the "ins" but there's been one this week in the form of a toilet plunger (downstairs loo not used to so many guests, apparently ConfusedShock). It's now in the garage with the other "random tools you don't often need, but when you do there's little else that would do the job"! Can you count decluttering plumbing?!?! Not sure about counting ins. Is it worth it? Thread-experienced people why do you count the ins?

234/2020 outs (missed my box clear on last count!)
