Welcome to the first Flylady thread of the decade! This is a friendly ongoing thread where we follow (loosely. In some cases, very loosely. Blush) the Flylady method for sorting out our homes and lives!

Newbies are always welcome here! It’s a long running thread so please don’t worry if we appear cliquey. There’s a lot of chatter and support for all sorts of things, alongside the housework stuff.

Over recent months we have agreed that big lists of daily links aren’t necessary - on a daily basis I will post (if I remember... it is maybe 18 months since I last hosted so please forgive any screw ups Blush) a link to the launch pad, which is where you can access the information for that day - babysteps, missions, daily focus etc. But if you’re confused about anything, please ask!

Check out the website too - but we suggest not signing up for the millions of emails.

Information on getting started here.

The great thing about Flylady is that you jump in where you are. Everything you do is progress. Don’t worry about not “keeping up”. Any achievement, however small, means progress.

Anyway, huge thank you to Stressy for running our very busy December thread! Thanks

And... HAPPY NEW YEAR FLEDGLINGS!!!

Piano tested. Decision NOT made yet. Argh. It’s very very different - not actually in a bad way necessarily but it’s a question of whether I can get used to it.. But the owner said I could go back next week and try again but she will put the heating on overnight and then leave me to it for an hour or so.

She said one of the pieces I played made her tearful 🙈 she’s not heard it played for a couple of years, when her mum became too frail to play.

Oh how lovely Lane. She is probably glad you haven’t made an instant decision. It is a wonderful idea that you could go back for an hour. It will help you make the decision and if you do easy for her to part with it. DDs partner has inherited his mother’s piano. He plays very well. We heard him in a NT castle once. He got a round of applause. I wish I could play. On the other hand we don’t have room for one. DD has a keyboard.

I got another drawer sorted last night. Leaving it all on my bed is quite a good idea. It was put away quickly, decisions made quickly but not folded the Kondo way. Some were flimsy tops with cami style ones underneath. You can’t fold those like that and they won’t go in the wardrobe. Still have more to sort a basket at a time. X2 but there is sheets in there too.

That hope baby settles and starts to feel better soon at least the poky stick worked on DH. Need it back for Ned. Anyone seen him?

Stilllivinginazoo · 04/01/2020 12:50

lane aw that's beautiful.i hear and see things sometimes and think of my parents.fond memories

I want a "Xmas control journal" ED to look back at their gifts over the yearswouldve given me much happiness..oh well.will advise it for grandchildren(if get any)....

I feel bit better knowing others teens are worried by world events(and Aussies fires too) as I do stress over how anxious they get about stuff.find it hard anymore to guage what's "normal" for them to be a bit concerned over

KTCluck · 04/01/2020 14:01

That’s fab news chic, you must be so relieved!

Good start Cineraria!

SC and Expletive I am in awe of your Christmas control journals. I might have to get something similar sorted. The buying of cards etc for next Christmas was certainly not me being intentionally organised, I only went in for risotto rice. However I did feel a bit smug when the checkout lady said “you’ll have to be careful you don’t put those somewhere and forget about them” now I have a designated wrapping / cards drawer Grin

Good luck with the nursery and increased meds Lane

Hope you get some sleep That, and hope you all feel better soon SC.

That coddle sounds delicious Tinselette

We’ve had a nice day so far. DH treated us to breakfast out after a walk around the harbour. He kept DD occupied while I ‘flew’, and then we are going to the park / beach when the football match DH is watching finishes. DD has played well and I’ve managed to encourage her to tidy up each times she’s finished with something. I doubt that’ll last though!

Ta Da:
Beds made
DD room tidied, clothes hung up, plus decluttered some too-small things from wardrobe.
S & s
Load of washing done and in the dryer
DW set off
Benches cleaned
Kettle cleaned (DH had somehow got food all over it Hmm)
Home bleurgh complete downstairs
Friday’s mission of cleaning table done (mine was also embarrassing Cineraria)
Dining room patio doors cleaned
A few thank you cards written and ready to post.

To Do:
Another load of washing
Dry stuff carried up and put away
Relax!

I was quite pleased with the flying this morning as for once I managed to stick to the plan of what needed doing. Normally I see other things that are dirty and stop and sort that, then something else, and end up feeling overwhelmed without completing what I wanted to. Today I noticed finger prints on the kitchen door glass and that the kitchen window needs cleaned but just left it - I’ll be in that zone soon enough. I feel fly lady would be proud!

KTCluck · 04/01/2020 14:08

Sounds like your decluttering is going well Bower

Enjoy your nap Zoo

KTCluck · 04/01/2020 14:11

Argh stressful zoo maybe he will be more willing again once the others are back at school? Leave him to it for now though.

TooStressyTooMessy · 04/01/2020 15:26

Also loving the sound of the Christmas journals SC and Expletive. Maybe next year!

Ooh foxes, please let us know how you get on with TOMM.

Finishing up here at work now. Have finished the main stuff; now on a quick break then will get a few more bits done and go. Going to take advantage of having time alone in the school holidays and go and do a quick food shop on my way home.

TooStressyTooMessy · 04/01/2020 15:27

zoo Flowers. Yes maybe as Laputa says it will go better once they are truly ‘back at school’.

Strategicchoring · 04/01/2020 15:45

The present list is very useful if (like us) you or dc receive presents at Christmas from people you aren't due to see until the summer. Obvs, thank you notes/e-mails in some cases, go out around about now, but if DD is bought a jumper or a dress or some such, we try and make sure she wears it (or we at least mention it) when we next see present-giver. Plus I buy for three sets of brothers who are close in age, and I often steal one present idea for another, and I am really useless at remembering what present was bought for which set!

Hope back pain eases soon Zoo. The book "Untangled", by Lisa someone, often recommended on Mnsnet, about raising teen girls, has a useful list in one of the chapters about when worries are at a "normal" level, and when they are of concern/poss need addressing further. DD went through a phase of having existential-type worries, and its upsetting, so many sympathies Flowers

Fab ta da list KTKluck!

Enjoy "The Smoke" Willow!

Good luck with piano decision Lane! We overhauled one that was an old family favourite. It needed a lot of work but is now back in good condition and we loved having it , in tune no less, at Christmas! Rather touchingly, it arrived with its original paper work, including black and white photos of previous owners.

Feeling a bit better this afternoon. Anyone remember spam fritters at school? I used to love them! Trying to recreate tonight (with ham of course!) with pea puree which DD is threatening to smear across plate or make in to a foam. I think she is joking! Xmas Grin

LaneBoy · 04/01/2020 15:49

LOL at pea foam. Someone’s been watching Masterchef :o

(Actually that’s another thing the kids and I do watch together, I hope it’s on again soon!)

Cagletini fell asleep Hmm so I might try and doze. I’m not going to be of any use this afternoon anyway I think!

Strategicchoring · 04/01/2020 15:55

Another fab list Lane!

Enjoy your child-free time Toostressy, well as much as supermarket shopping is enjoyable that is!

Zoo sympathies over hwk dispute. DD is meant to be studying for exam she missed before Christmas. Every time I mention it, she closes me down saying she "has it under control" although I have seen little evidence to support that tbh. There's no getting through to teens sometimes, we just have to trust some of it goes "in". Flowers

rachael12345 · 04/01/2020 16:01

Hi all! New to this thread (and actually writing in mumsnet tbh , mostly a lurker ) .
Been sort of flying since sept but all gone by the wayside over hols. God my house is filthy now!!
Kids dd5 and ds nearly 1 . Precious little sleep... stressy mature student dh - not as helpful as he thinks he is, always rescuing catalogues from the recycling then scattering them about lol.
Dressed to shoes this morning, lovely early solo fast walk with dog - been tackling xmas take down since then. Also casserole cooking for bereaved buddy.
Wish I had followed advice to do it gradually as have got it all in boxes but created almighty mess in so doing... i desperately want to hoover but promised dd we would do painting and she has overdosed on my little pony already...
Just boobing baby to sleep now and taking stock while writing this.
Hoovering can wait til tomorrow, playing and dinner are more important.

When folks say 'write in journal ' what do you mean? Ypu mean control journal? Mine has turned into a jumble in a shallow basket.. v v v hot spot! To be sorted when school starts back on Tuesday.

Hoping this thread will get me back on track.

Strategicchoring · 04/01/2020 16:06

X post again

Enjoy your well-deserved snoozes Lane and Zoo

Strategicchoring · 04/01/2020 16:36

A warm welcome to Rachael12345 sounds as though you have a lot on your plate!

Recently, I think people have been talking about a mix of bullet journals, gratitude journals, cjs, home ed journals and specific cjs for Christmas. I think over the years, only a few of us actually use a Flylady cj regularly. Imho it's useful to have a file that contains all the info that comes in useful if you were to hand over your home to someone else in a hurry: ie emergency numbers (eg vets and docs, close relatives), useful numbers (baby-sitters, plumbers and window cleaner and electrician), annual, bi-annual, quarterly, monthly, weekly, daily tasks, important addresses, routines, weekly timetable etc etc, location of fuse box and stop-cock useful tips etc. I can't honestly say I look at it as often as I should though!

Strategicchoring · 04/01/2020 16:38

Many to add to Rachael and all newcomers : don't hesitate to ask any further qs, hopefully one of us will be able to help!

KTCluck · 04/01/2020 17:48

I’m exhausted just reading that impressive list That, let alone actually doing it all, and on the tiny amount of sleep you have had!

Welcome Rachael. Fly lady and, more recently, this thread have definitely dragged me out of chaos on a few occasions. That’s lovely of you making a casserole for your friend when you’ve got so much on.

I don’t have a control journal but it definitely sounds like a good idea.

Not much else achieved in the Cluck household today. I’ve chucked a load of towels in the WM and made spaghetti and meatballs for dinner jam packed with veg - DD is much more likely to eat it if it’s in a sauce. DH will be clearing up, although luckily for him I tend to clear up what I can as I go (unlike him).

No idea about the food on the kettle Zoo. It’s one of his talents. He’s good in the kitchen but the mess he makes is something else. No advice on the argument front so have some Flowers. I think I’ll find the arguing and silent treatment much more difficult than the current toddler tantrums. I’m sure DD will excel at them too.

LaneBoy · 04/01/2020 18:16

I misread then kt and thought you meant you’d put meatballs in the washing machine :o

Welcome rachael! :)

I would love to have a control journal. I don’t really know when to start when we are still so cluttered though. I guess I’m still in that “we need to gut the whole house before building up a routine” phase but actually that’s probably pretty short sighted isn’t it? As the other regular stuff does need doing. Regularly.

OP posts:
LaneBoy · 04/01/2020 18:17

I did nap a little. Cagletini woke up in a foul mood but cheered up helping DH with dinner.

OP posts:
foxessocks · 04/01/2020 18:20

That's some list that!

Not a great day here, you know when you just want to go back to bed? That's been me today. I've been grumpy and probably unreasonable! But I'll give myself a bit of credit, I didn't go back to bed, i even took ds out for a scooter ride and I made a fish pie, so I did try now to wallow in self pity!!

What I think I need this evening is a large g&t and chocolate. Hope you're all doing ok. Got ds to talk to you yet zoo?

Welcome Rachael Smile
