Part 7 of the decluttering challenge - can you get rid of one item a day?

StealthNinjaMum · 06/03/2019 12:16

Back again!

A group of mumsnetters have been emptying our homes, gradually decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day.

We’re very green and like to recycle, sell, give away and sometimes eat our clutter I’m still alive after the 8 year old gherkins.

Newbies are welcome to join us. We just get rid one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress, get support when it gets hard, and suggest new household systems and ways of doing things.

The most exciting thread on mumsnet. In this thread @SandandSea will tell us what she’s going to do with her big plastic sheet…..

Previous thread is here

Have any of you had luck sewing up the inner seams of leggings, or is it better to chuck and buy new? They look like new except for where my thighs rub Blush - 4 or 5 pairs.

PenelopeFlintstone · 18/04/2019 11:36

Look what I've learned: www.elitedaily.com/news/hack-prevent-holes-leggings/1673239
I think this is relevant to clutter because I have leggings with holes cluttering up my bedroom.

SandAndSea · 18/04/2019 13:54

@PenelopeFlintstone - Do you need a stern talking to? Grin

I wouldn't keep old, worn clothes, apart from a very few for decorating. A good question to ask yourself could be, "Would the charity shop want these to sell?" If the answer is, "Absolutely not. No one will buy them. They're only good for rags," then you have your answer.

Marking so I don't lose this thread. Will be back soon!

WoogleCone · 18/04/2019 17:39

Hey all, spent the majority of my day helping SIL (not the ungrateful one) which I don't begrudge at all but does mean I lost my clearing out day.
Only thing I did do was find an old small handbag that I've added to the charity bag. When DH gets home I'll try to get the hoover upstairs and finish the small bit of wardrobe I started the other day before bedtime routine.
Penelope if the hole is just along the seam on leggings I do sew them up, usually by hand but they last a lot longer if you can run them through a sewing machine. Usually lose a couple mm but as they're stretchy it's not usually a problem.

I'll take a bow for Tetris stealth, it's the only interesting thing I've ever said. Grin

WoogleCone · 18/04/2019 20:33

DH got home on time so secured me 20 minutes go finish the wardrobe space I started before. The old clothes that I'd put aside are now in a bag ready to recycle and I found my old computer tower that he's carried downstairs which was can go to the tip.

Wrapped a box of shoes too as they've sold on Facebook. Just need to try get to the post office tomorrow whilst at work 🤔

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/04/2019 23:50

DD has just gone through all her make-up/hair/skin products and whittled out anything old/not useable .
Some bits fir the charity shop, a load for the bin.

And I have inherited some unopened skincare minis that I put in the bathroom to use up.

I think so, @SandandSea. Thanks for obliging. The jeans have gone as have two bottles of out of date sunscreen - but only after checking that it REALLY does expire. Grin
I did resist shopping in a new town while on holiday -about 6 charity shops which I ignored and a chain department store which we don't have at home. I was strict with not buying anything until actual gaps/needs were identified.

StealthNinjaMum · 19/04/2019 11:31

Thanks wooglecone it was very apt as I was shifting stuff around.

I spent a lot of time tidying and too much time on mumsnet. Someone picked up some old DIY project crap and I actually got three bags of stuff out of the car and gave to the charity shop.

Today I have tried on some summer trousers. Some are too big but I just can't bring myself to throw them away yet so they're going in a plastic box in the wardrobe so they won't get in the wAy. I have very few summer clothes so wil like have to go shopping. Will buy minimally.

I have been reading and following all successes. Thank you as well for the support I needed earlier in the week.

We are back in the UK staying with my parents. I have just decluttered the children's medicine collection... Kept for our visits. New stuff will be required for our next trip as everything was just out of date.

MunchMunch · 19/04/2019 15:38

Hi everyone, I joined in a little bit on the last thread then went awol but I'm back and will try and post again but will definitely at least read about everyone's progress.

I can't say I've done very well today as instead of throwing out, I've brought in a guitar and a small cabinet from the charity shop 🤦‍♀️ In my defence I'm about to redecorate the sitting room and I'm upcycling furniture to go with the "theme" of the new decor once its painted (I'm sort of debating whether to now put it in my bedroom!)

StealthNinjaMum · 19/04/2019 19:44

An unexpected decluttering session. While looking for a necklace to wear I found loads of costume jewellery I no longer like and have got about a shoebox full to go to the charity shop.

StealthNinjaMum · 19/04/2019 19:44

Should've said I'll need to smuggle the jewellery out of the house before dds decide they want them!

I've now listed DD's monster high dolls on eBay so hopefully someone will buy them and I can get rid of it all and free up some much needed space.

Apart from general rubbish I haven't thrown anything out yet so I WILL find at least one thing to chicke before the night is over!

WoogleCone · 19/04/2019 20:57

I love unexpected decluttering sessions stealth, I think they're often the most productive. Much like the best days are often spontaneously planned.

DH got in the garden while I was at work today, cut LOADS off the back fence which was mega overgrown with ivy. Brown bin is full to bursting now. He's planning on cutting the grass tomorrow too! I'll be at work though, serving drinks to people who get to sit in the sunshine Envy

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/04/2019 22:20

Another spontaneous declutter again from DD ...........I went up to clean the guinea-pig's cage (no we're not de-cluttering our lovely piggie Grin ) and get DD to help catch her from the garden run. DD decided to de-clutter her wardrobe , sort out clothes for storage , handbags, books , soft toys from over the years.

So : a basket full to store away
Three bags of Charity Shop items

And the guinea-pig got an extra hour of grazing time

PenelopeFlintstone · 20/04/2019 01:03

I got back from holiday last night and unpacked my toiletries and sorted out the bathroom cupboard, decanting as I went. The result was 7 expired sunscreens and about another 7 tubes and bottles out of the house. I felt a bit guilty about all the sunscreen as they were all fairly full but I suppose we just bought a new one at the start of summer and they've built up. The expiry dates ranged from 2015 to 2018, so I suppose it's a normal amount if I'd actually thrown them away when they expired instead of saving them up for today.

TailsoftheManyPaws · 20/04/2019 08:14

Small vase and a metal teapot put in the charity bag.

We seem to have 3 different sets of ice lolly makers and about 8 ice cube trays. Could be the day to freeze a few and declutter the rest.

PenelopeFlintstone · 20/04/2019 08:44

I've just done my t-shirt drawer, my jumper drawer and my underwear drawer. Two bags to the bin and an Aldi bag ready to go to the charity shop. I can hardly believe what I'm doing! (Yes, yes, I know everyone on this thread is doing the same thing. Ha ha)
@SandandSea - in the rubbish bag are two more tops with little holes in the front. I'm feeling strong!! Grin

Well done, @PenelopeFlintstone! Good to read! Star

Since last updating, I've taken a load of stuff to the dump and dropped a bag at a charity (including some really nice clothes I'd hoped to sell).

Today, I've got 2 parcels for the post office and a big, worn towel going to an animal charity. The towel has kept reappearing in the laundry but I'm finally on it!

PenelopeFlintstone · 20/04/2019 13:26

Did you have it advertised and it didn't sell? Or did you just decide to get rid of it and get it out of the house? I'm asking because I've got tons of stuff that I think I should sell. My work hours will be cut in June too, so I'll have more time and less money.

OublietteBravo · 20/04/2019 13:28

I’m away visiting family for the weekend. I remembered to bring two outgrown hooded towels which have been passed on the my nieces.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/04/2019 13:45

While I'm sitting here in the English sun, I've had a message from DH that he's cleared three large boxes of stuff from the attic and taken all the clothes I've sorted over last few weeks to the charity collection point. I would say he's earnt a few beers but he's On Call (which is why we left him behind)
