It has been shoved on top of my wardrobe since the wedding 2 years ago.

I have decided to flog it as I have the memories/photos dont need to keep dress.

Its a maggie sottero dress and they seem to sell well.....

I dont want to pay £100 to clean it just in case it doesnt sell so it is now soaking in my sink and about go in washer on delicate cycle.

Will it fall apart? Will all the beads fall off?!!

Would it really cost £100 to clean? Have you had different quotes?

Where were you going to sell it? Couldn't you see if it sell and then clean it professionally?

saffymum · 05/07/2007 13:47

I would hand wash tbh. At least turn it inside out and even put into a wash bag or a pillowcase so there isn't much activitiy in the machine to damage it. I think you are mad...

NAB3 · 05/07/2007 13:49

I definitely wouldn't put it in the washer. If it gets ruined, which it almost certainly will, you will have no dress and no money. Why don't you put it up for sale and then have it dry cleaned once you have a buyer?

HelenLoveJoyOfSpringfield · 05/07/2007 13:49

Did you check out how much a cry cleaner would charge you for the wedding dress????

£100 seems a huge amount!! I think when my sister got hers done it was £25!

JonesTheSteam · 05/07/2007 13:49

Mad as a box of frogs!!

HelenLoveJoyOfSpringfield · 05/07/2007 13:49

MAB3 has the best idea

WaynettaWiggumSpice · 05/07/2007 13:50

I got mine done in London for about 30 quid!

ChippyMinton · 05/07/2007 13:50

Is it really in the sink now?
Rinse it by hand and lay it flat on a pile of towels to dry.

And keep your fingers crossed.

hmmmmm Ive read a few people saying that they HAVE washed them thats what gave me the nudge to do it!!

Yes it is in the sink now!

I was going to put it inside a duvet cover inside out and wash it on hand wash.

It is this one static.preloved.co.uk/uploads/userphotos/105154.jpg

I washed mine in the washing machine but it was polyester - 30 degree cycle, it came out absolutely fine. If it had been silk I would have had it specialist cleaned though.

morningpaper · 05/07/2007 14:02

If it's polyester, it will be fine

smurfgirl · 05/07/2007 14:02

Is it filthy? A lot of dresses on ebay say has small marks etc but will come out with dry cleaning - if its just a bit mucky then put it on ebay as it is.

Maggie dresses do sell v.v.well.

WigWamBam · 05/07/2007 14:02

What's it made of?

If it's silk, I wouldn't stick it in the washing machine, but otherwise I would - on the delicates cycle, inside a duvet cover, and at the lowest temperature I could.

Maybe soaking/handwashing will be enough.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 05/07/2007 14:02

I dont think mine is silk. Organza I think with not sure what underneath.

Its the swarvoski crystals that concern me slightly!

OP posts:
morningpaper · 05/07/2007 14:04

Look at the tag - it will tell you what it is made of and what the dry cleaning instructions are

morningpaper · 05/07/2007 14:04

organza IS silk

PeckaRolloverAgain · 05/07/2007 14:04

This is what it is made of, from the site

One-piece organza over satin gown with lace up back and sweep train. Chenille flowers, metallic embroidery, Swarovski crystals, bugle beads and seed beads.

It is really filthy, all underneath is black from trailing on the ground when I was walking around.

WigWamBam · 05/07/2007 14:06

Traditional organza is silk.

Lots of modern organzas are polyester or polyester mix, though.

I'd risk it, I think.

tissy · 05/07/2007 14:06

you're mad, pecka!

How are you going to iron it?

mumto3girls · 05/07/2007 14:06

DON'T DO IT!!!!!

morningpaper · 05/07/2007 14:10

What does the LABEL say?

morningpaper · 05/07/2007 14:11

Mine came out fine, didn't need ironing TBH

I'd risk it, to be honest I'm fairly confident it will be fine ...

If not you can make a nice sparkly necklace from all the beads that you will extract from your washing machine filter

PeckaRolloverAgain · 05/07/2007 14:14

There isnt a label except the maggie sottero size one.

FECKIT - its in!!

Im not sure how effective the wash will be as its so big I have to stuff it in so the water wont move around it much.

I have put it on low spin, delicates 30 degrees.

Oh well, it was ruined anyway, some of the flowers had discoloured from bein shoved in a bag for 2 years!
