Realistically, how long should the silicone stuff last around the bath/shower before it starts to perish ?

The sealant around DD's bath and my shower has started to look a bit shabby and pulling away from the side of the shower tray & bath. The shower sealant is the worst and yet both were only redone about 4 months ago (no longer) by a good plumber.

The bath is used at least twice a day and the shower the same amount. How long should good quality sealant last ? Surely more than 4 months ?

BTW, the bathroom suites have only been in for 18 months, so we are already on our second lot of sealant.

My builder told me it should be good for a couple of years. Depends what the weather or room temperature was like when he did it, though.

If room was hot or cold, condensation stops the silicone sticking properly.

I think I'd want to phone the plumber and complain. It should last for a few years.

The rooms are big (for bathrooms) and the windows were open to air it. It didn't feel overly cold or moist in there. Grrrrrrr

Our silicone didn't last long because the bath hadn't 'settled' in it's place.

Belgo just reminded me. Plumber should have filled the bath with water until the silicone set, too. Often it comes away cos your body weight makes the bath / shower move.

The silicone in our shower has been there for nearly 5 years with no problem - the shower gets used between 2-4 times a day.

None around the bath as its a free-standing roll-top one.

How long did you leave the silicone to dry before using the shower? The longer the better ie. couple of days
