The Organised Mum Method

Does anyone fancy joining me in following the organised mum method?

Back to work tomorrow after the summer off (work term time only) and need to get on top of a house work routine after struggling this last year or so to stay on top of things.

I suffer with anxiety and can easily get lost in my mood without structure and I like what I saw on the website. Will probably tweek the method as I go but it's a good structured plan to kick things off.

I work odd hours around the kids being at school but have a clear hour each day to dedicate to this. Plus I am sick of losing my weekends to playing catch up when I could be doing nicer things with the kids!!

Four of us in a 4 bed semi which is clean, just full of stuff that comes with having kids. It can get pretty messy!

Have done the odd bit of decluttering over the summer which has made a bit of a difference!

Looking forward to having a house that doesn't embarrass me on the odd occasion a guest arrives unannounced Blush

That sounds like amazing progress April!

Have stepped beds here and remade DD's. Nappies are in the washing machine so bedding will go in straight after that. Fingers crossed is going to be dry here today although it's very grey at the moment. Have also sorted out some unused toiletries to go in the food bank collection for harvest festival at school, will sort out some food things later.

Fudge our desk is a similar dumping ground, I am constantly sorting through it but always get interrupted before the job is finished so it just gets worse and worse! I'm planning another go this week as the study is the smallest room in the houser but also the messiest!

ItWillAllBeOkayInTheEnd · 02/10/2018 10:39

Had a quiet half hour putting away summer clothes and getting out warmer things. Down to tackle the kitchen now.

Are the e-cloths just any microfibre cloths? I have a couple but so far I haven't been blown away.

TwittleBee · 02/10/2018 10:47

Fudge and RaspberryBlonde same here about the desks! DH and I are looking into getting decent filing cabinet and some cupboards so hopefully that will help us get and stay organised

ememem84 · 02/10/2018 11:04

I’m going to start this once we have our new house. We’ve moved from a 2 bed apartment with no garden or laundry drying space to dparents place and will be going to our new house (end of terrace 3 bed open plan living diner kitchen. Front and back garden and garage) phew. There’s me, dh, ds (1) and catface.

We both work full time so an hour a day and a load of washing a day suits me fine. Once I/we get into the swing of things I’m sure it’ll be easy to keep on top of.

April241 · 02/10/2018 11:55

In laws have taken the kids for the so I’m having a much needed coffee then starting at one end of the house and working my way to the kitchen.

Got a load of things for the skip and charity bins today also. Determined!

furandchandeliers · 02/10/2018 12:41

@ItWillAllBeOkayInTheEnd no it's a set of orange clothes one is to be used wet and one is a bit like the little cloths you get in glasses cases, but bigger! Really does leave my windows and mirrors streak freeSmile

BookishOwl · 02/10/2018 12:41

Good luck April!

BookishOwl · 02/10/2018 12:44

I've done all but 1 bed (just need to get the bedding for that one back on the bed as it's now dry). I'm trying to have tomorrow off so doing hall/stairs/landing/utility today too. All done except for hoovering and mopping the hall/utility.

Oh I also need to do the bathrooms. That's still not quite working for me, think I need to allocate specific tasks to specific days.

So actually still quite a bit to do but then... day off tomorrow!

Littlechocola · 02/10/2018 14:17

A question about spray mops. Do I need one and if so which one?

Cherrypi · 02/10/2018 15:34

Decided to skip the bed sheets this week they didn’t need it yet. Dusted, vacuumed and did bathroom. Still need to declutter but getting to it slowly. The living room where I spend most of my time looks great. Ooh will drop off a bag of old clothes in the clothing bank on the way to school.

Littlechocola · 02/10/2018 15:47

I have to change my bedding twice a week because I’m a sweaty mess!

mumof2sarah · 02/10/2018 17:26

I went up to change the sheets today (bare in mind I'm not 100% atm and don't know what's up with me - awaiting drs to decide lol) and ended up lying back down in them Confused I'd say that's a fail/win. I had the intention and I actually wanted to but I also got a nap I needed. Sheets will last another night lol.

Am actually really loving TOMM atm and finding it's actually working for me following it x

HalloumiGus · 02/10/2018 18:29

Hello all. I have fallen way behind. Everything is staying reasonably tidy although I still long to take a black bag to DC's toys! I have realised we can live with changing the bed in full fortnightly so bought a flat sheet for under duvet. Huge time saver just washing sheets and pillow cases!

I am studying madly between now and Christmas so standards must slip!

AdventuringThroughLife · 02/10/2018 19:35

Way begind here. Feeling so overwhelmed :(

Littlechocola · 02/10/2018 19:39

AdventuringThroughLife is there anything we can do to help?

HalloumiGus · 02/10/2018 22:03

@AdventuringThroughLife don't worry about being behind. Set your phone timer for 2 mins. Wipe a counter or wipe a sink or brush the kitchen floor. One little job. Then put your feet up 👍

oatmilk4breakfast · 02/10/2018 22:05

👌 ok!

HalloumiGus · 02/10/2018 22:05

@Littlechocola if I had to change the bed twice a week I would be tempted to use a sheet and blankets rather than a duvet- But then I hate changing duvet covers!

I have a Vileda spray mop which is pretty good - has a rectangular head.

hodgeheg92 · 03/10/2018 01:27

Wow there's been lots of productivity on here!

Hope you find your way to starting adventuringthroughlife as once you've started it gets easier.

Keeping on track of things so far this week, although can't hoover the bedrooms because I haven't got the strength to move the hoover on the longer carpet Blush I've been trying to get all of the windows clean in my time slot in each room this week, how do they get so grimy?! The bathroom thing is kind of working too, I just do something during one of my visits there, usually while brushing my teeth.

Littlechocola · 03/10/2018 09:59

HalloumiGus I could try that although like my duvet. I don’t mind changing it although I’m short so do it over the banister Grin

I will look at the vileda mop. I keep changing my mind as it’s only our bathroom and porch but both are big and I’m sure it would be quicker than getting down on my hands and knees!

Sparklyfee · 03/10/2018 10:03

Can anyone recommend a handheld hoover that actually picks stuff up! I only have carpet on the stairs but I've heard that some aren't very good and I'm sick of dragging my upright one around. It's heavy Sad

TwittleBee · 03/10/2018 10:25

DH was a star yesterday and done all the bedrooms plus the sheets too!

Wont be doing entrance hall and stairs today as we are in middle of redecorating them! So feels like a day off haha!

Kitchen day tomorrow though! My fav day haha

happytobemrsg · 03/10/2018 10:53

DH & I both work part time, with DH sometimes working at weekends so I've changed the rest days to the days I'm working - when I get home from work I'm too shattered to do anything. Only my third day of doing this but already my house feels cleaner & more manageable. I can't believe how much I get done in 30 minutes. Focusing those 30 minutes on one room really makes a difference. Today I'm doing my lounge. Floors are already clean so I've polished everything & cleaned the door (having work done & dust & dirt gets everywhere). Still got 15 minutes left so going to deep clean DS's highchair (moved from the kitchen while builders are here). Tomorrow is my focus Day on the lounge. Planning on hoovering under the sofas & finding places for all of DS's toys

Littlechocola · 03/10/2018 13:25

I’m quite surprised at how dusty our hall and stairs get in one week. It must have been filthy before I was doing it weekly but I didn’t seem to notice! Grin
I’ve got a day to myself today as guests have gone out so I went back to bed after dc left for school and then ate breakfast in bed at 12. I love lazy days!
Hallway done and might clean the fridge out later. Level 1 jobs half done.

ponygirlcurtis · 03/10/2018 16:59

Although I am not slavishly doing everything I can definitely see that the house is both cleaner and tidier than it ever has been. The once-a-week discipline has really helped - instead of being overwhelmed by the thought of taking everything off every shelf of the bookcase to wash down, dry, dust then replace, I have done just a couple of shelves a week, knowing I will get to the others the next week or the next. And then they get dusted eventually, rather than never!

Although I will be ignoring today's focus in favour of (again...) clearing up after the workman who has been in and covered almost everything in the bathroom and hall with a layer of dust and oil. Sigh...
