Fledglings are raucous in August - the Flylady thread

Thanks to paxillin for our August thread title Smile.

Hello all and welcome to the August Flylady thread. We are a friendly bunch who try to roughly follow the Flylady system. How strictly you follow it is of course up to you! Every day the thread leader posts information about which zone of the house we are in and the missions for the week.

Newbies are always welcome. All information is available on the Flylady website www.flylady.net

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

There is enough information on this thread to start getting on with things but you can also trawl through the (confusing at times) website:-

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

I'm on holiday this week with intermittent internet connection so will not be on much but will keep an eye on the thread and hopefully everyone else will feel free to jump in!

With it being summer holidays it may be pretty quiet on here but missions etc will be here for those who want them.

Oh cool thanks ginger I am on PopArt (bloody brilliant isn't it?) but hadn't seen that one. I recently gathered all our login details together for the various things we've signed up to in the vague attempt it would help me remember 😂 it's annoying the laptop not working though as we haven't even tried a few things like literacy planet, hence thinking I may invest in a little netbooks for them to work on

GingerIvy · 22/08/2017 10:36

Yeah, I keep all my ed signins in my diary, so it's all in one place. I'm doing the language books too (One Third Stories) for both French and Spanish. They are brilliant!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 22/08/2017 10:40

Ds has a desk in his room. he has never used it for homework. Hmm
I have been completely KO'd by the virus. Sleep has been and will probably continue to be the only thing that I do for a little while.

Cagliostro · 22/08/2017 11:17

Those look really good! I might try a Spanish one but we aren't quite sure what we are doing with languages yet. DD wants to learn Japanese which we have dabbled in but want to step it up now. Spanish would be good as they do pick up vocabulary quite quickly really and I'm enjoying it too! I also have a secret hankering to teach them Latin :o

Doodle maths looks brilliant but I got the impression that it's an iPad kind of thing? I am thinking of getting a mini one at some point as there are loads of great apps we had on our old one.

Cagliostro · 22/08/2017 11:18

DD really wants a desk but I'm not completely convinced she'd use it either! She also wants a science lab in her room :o no space for either ATM so it's a moot point until we move.

Cagliostro · 22/08/2017 11:19

Hope you feel better soon einstein Brew

Afreshstartplease · 22/08/2017 11:47

celeste my dd starts school in september too. From experience of older dc homework at first is mainly reading and books have no words at first. Mine then got a book to write / draw about their weekend in depending on abiity

GingerIvy · 22/08/2017 12:07

Cag I got a cool book from the Book People that has "contemporary latin" in it. So all the common phrases plus things like "latin words used in Harry Potter books/films and their meanings." The boys think it's pretty neat.

GingerIvy · 22/08/2017 12:08

Cag and I think doodle maths is good for android or ipad. Not sure though. We have it on ipad.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 22/08/2017 12:50

Ds' school use doodle as a host site for various stuff including maths. He uses it on the laptop. May or may not be the same thing but it works fine for him.

foxessocks · 22/08/2017 15:09

Ds is better today but I have succumbed - feeling hot with a sore throat and exhausted. Hope everyone else who is poorly feels better soon - seems a lot of it around just now!

May attempt some flying after a cuppa and resting my eyes for five minutes. Dh home early and we've been at the beach today so all a bit tired out anyway. Brew

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 22/08/2017 17:27

Hello all, oh dear, here is some hot lemon Brew for all poorly people.

Ta da:-
Dentist has put filling back in tooth and so far feels ok
Girls' back to school haircuts done
Bit more sorting in DD1's room - lucky I did as realised she has no white school socks so will need to get some
Girls' tea

To do:-
Get through until bedtime Grin.

It's this one, I used to have the free app on iPad I think. Still the priority is a netbook at the mo not least because I'm chasing up some possible editing work. Damn unreliable technology Angry

I'm very impressed how much your DCs do ginger I'm finding it really inspiring when you post Thanks how old are they if you don't mind saying? Mine are 10 and nearly 8, but definitely behind where they should be mostly due to DD's MH issues. Trying to feel optimistic that things can improve Confused as the option of her returning to school is unthinkable ATM.

DS has been super hard work today. Seems to be par for the course ATM. Hoping this isn't just the way things are as he gets older. :(

Well, we didn't get the cookies made. Upstairs neighbour came to our door and aggressively complained about the dcs making noise. They were sitting playing quietly at the time, although had been a little noisy around 10am. (so over 2 hrs previously) She demanded I take them out on her days off when she is home (not sure how she expects me to know when her days off are and I don't care anyway) so that she can't hear them. I refrained from telling her to fuck off, as I didn't want dcs hearing me say that. Hmm

But her being aggressive at our door upset both dcs, and I spent the afternoon trying to keep them calm (and relatively quiet as when they're upset, they can get more noisy). FFS. Middle of the day on a weekday. Completely messed up our schedule for the day.

GingerIvy · 22/08/2017 18:13

Stressy glad you were able to get the tooth fixed!

Cag Mine are 8 and 11. Both have SNs, and are behind in some areas. 11yo is ahead in some - we're working on algebra in maths for him, while reviewing other gaps from when he was in school. 8yo has dyslexia, so it definitely affects his education. Both hate writing - mainly due to hypermobility, but for the 8yo also due to the dyslexia.

GingerIvy · 22/08/2017 18:15

We've been working on the writing - write a minecraft story, tell me how to do X in minecraft, and so on. They will try more on things that interest them.

Cagliostro · 22/08/2017 19:16

Thank you ginger and really sorry about grumpy neighbour :( that kind of thing creates so much ill feeling doesn't it. I feel really paranoid when we are at mum's flat.

Unlike yesterday DS was having a really bad time doing science. He's just less keen on writing so it's to be expected really. It was refreshingly nice though to see DD happily getting on with it (as she was so scared of anything "too much like school") and particularly writing notes in her own words which she really struggles with (often to the point of tears). So that's a win. DS stormed through his maths with DH this morning apparently which is great.

We played some new card games after too, so quite a nice evening overall.

GingerIvy · 22/08/2017 20:12

Cag sounds like it went well. We're working through the writing stuff slowly. Neither would write at all when they first came out of school - both had been pushed to the point of refusal. Better now though.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 22/08/2017 20:48

Hello all, done some more tidying in DD1's room and it looks a bit better. It's not perfect but stuff is a bit more ordered. More to do tomorrow. She has so many cuddly toys though and is attached to all of them Confused.

Rant coming: have not been able to sort any childcare for tomorrow so have had to take the day off. Not exactly helping my relationship with the boss I would imagine. Find it so hard to balance work and childcare and yet threads on here seem to imply it is easy. Shouldn't read them but they just annoy me as they really do not match my or people in real life that I know's experience.

Cag and Ginger, I find it so interesting to here all about your home schooling topics. How mean of your neighbour Ginger. Threads I've read on here seem to have some good advice for dealing with neighbours who are unreasonable about noise.

Hope you feel better soon foxes. It's hard being ill with little ones Flowers. Hope you feel better soon too Einstein.

Hope headache stayed away ofazoo.

Exciting times for children starting school Afresh and celeste. DD2 has taken to wearing her school uniform around the house to get ready for school Grin.

Hope glucose test went ok Cag.

Big wing flaps to all, will be back with links in a bit.
