Fledglings are raucous in August - the Flylady thread

Thanks to paxillin for our August thread title Smile.

Hello all and welcome to the August Flylady thread. We are a friendly bunch who try to roughly follow the Flylady system. How strictly you follow it is of course up to you! Every day the thread leader posts information about which zone of the house we are in and the missions for the week.

Newbies are always welcome. All information is available on the Flylady website www.flylady.net

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

There is enough information on this thread to start getting on with things but you can also trawl through the (confusing at times) website:-

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

I'm on holiday this week with intermittent internet connection so will not be on much but will keep an eye on the thread and hopefully everyone else will feel free to jump in!

With it being summer holidays it may be pretty quiet on here but missions etc will be here for those who want them.

Awesome pony pics! Star We are big MLP fans here, including DH (fluttershy is his fave :o). Hate the Equestria Girls spin off though ugh.

I am achieving absolutely bugger all here lately. Getting very aware that I am now in third trimester and have shitloads to do in so many aspects of life. Fuuuuuuck.

Cagliostro · 20/08/2017 13:48

Thank you for thoughts about EHCP by the way. I'm going to email the people about it and ask. Private EP if it's as little as £300 is doable but last resort doable IYSWIM. So will see what happens. We haven't even had the Caglets' autism diagnosis reports yet and then I will be applying for DLA and all that jazz. Need to chase up HV to see if she got anywhere asking the paediatrician about melatonin too. Also she is supposed to be seeing them to start the ball rolling for further investigation (she implied DS is dyspraxia and I think she's considering ADHD for both). So much going on. I am so mentally drained by it all!

And then need to keep thinking about the home ed stuff. Ginger you've inspired me to start some term time stuff next week - possibly including getting them up at a set time (even if not so early). I was going to leave it all until DS' birthday (haven't even sorted his party) on 30th but I think we need a little gradual structure beforehand. Also need to make sure more general routines get stuck to and gradually increased, so we are at least in a vaguely improved state when baby is born into chaos arrives.

Oh yes and you know that council finance form I did? Well I actually bloody did it and that was an achievement because I HATE that stuff and it makes me grumpy and panicky. And then we went to town and I forgot the fucking thing.

Should really put pizza in oven, sort a wash load and try and decide whether to let DD nap or not (sleepover last night).

GingerIvy · 20/08/2017 14:08

Cag the DLA forms are a real stress - I'm doing dc2's renewal this week - but definitely worth it. The sooner you get it done and in the better (says the woman that postponed doing the renewal for over a month! hahahaha).

We've got new educational apps that the dcs started using this week, and we've begun our WW2 unit. Right now we're knee deep in the start of the war. One of the things we talked about was the Anschluss, so I used it as an excuse to watch The Sound of Music Grin which is that time period - gave us lots of things to talk about.

When we get to rationing in a few weeks, I'm hoping to follow rationing mealplans for 2 weeks so they can see how it was (I've printed off ration books that we're going to take to the butcher and such Grin). My mother and ex's mother also remember rationing, so we're going to be facetiming them so they can tell the dcs about it from their perspective as children at the time.

We're also discussing the politics going on in the US, and we're looking at the similarities there.

Lots of homework for me though, with organising and going over material ahead of time. Hmm I have a small list of things I need to acquire over the next week or so in order to fit it in to the lesson plans.

I think I'm floating about 4 different "to do" lists. Grin

CotswoldStrife · 20/08/2017 14:52

I love those drawings - such cute expressions on the ponies, she's drawn them so well!

The rationing work sounds fab GingerIvy, my mum went through rationing (and evacuation) and often told us of the time she was presented with a banana and was completely clueless as to what it was or how to get in to it. She'd never seen one that she could remember. When Trump was elected there were quite a few newspaper articles comparing it back to the rise of theThird Reich, I thought it was a bit strong at the time (and I'm no fan of Trump's) but it certainly looks like that now Sad

Get those forms completed ladies (says the President of Procrastination ...) why do we leave these things on our to-do list? I am exactly the same.

Building dust is the worst Einstein, it seems to take days to settle - you wipe a surface then the following morning it is covered again.

DH has actually taken DD out for a bit to a hobby-thing that they share. I have been shopping and have run the dishwasher, and should really go out to a different supermarket for a few more bits. No, don't applaud my hard work you'll only make me blush.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 20/08/2017 15:14

Wow amazing drawings zoo!

Ta da:-
School shoes checked
DH occupying DD2 so DD1 can get on with her homework while I unload the dishwasher and help every so often.

GingerIvy · 20/08/2017 16:20

Cots That's fascinating about the banana story. I just want the dcs to really see the difference - we take so much for granted, including the foods we have available and just everything. I think it will mean more to them coming from their grandmothers - and then the dcs can ask them questions as well. I'm really looking forward to it. They help with meal planning, so I'm going to need to organise a lot of different meals so they can help choose ration-friendly meals. (Not sure I'm looking forward to the cooking part of it though!!) And sadly, yes recent events do seem very similar. Scary.

DD is crying because she doesn't want an omelette for dinner she just wants eggs Confused we have tried to explain that an omelette is eggs but she doesn't believe us so dh is getting her to make it so she can see what goes in! Funny things 3 year olds.

Greymalkin · 20/08/2017 18:30

Evening all, hope you've all had good weekends?

I've fallen off the thread yet again :( Ever since I started my new job (not exactly new any more) in April, I have hardly any time for housework or Mumsnetting.

Makes me a little sad that I can't keep up with you all as this thread is such a lovely, supportive one and I actually miss you all when I'm not on it!! Someone give me a grip!!

Got a few bits done today:
Walked round the local bootsale in the sunshine with DS and DH, got some great bargains
Went over to in-laws for a catch up

Washed another load, now in the tumble dryer

DH is cooking dinner whilst DS and I are watching the original 'BFG' which is making me feel all nostalgic

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 20/08/2017 20:43

Evening all. zoo, hope your DC don't get back too late. Grey, lovely to hear from you. I'm not going to give you a grip because I think it's lovely that you miss the thread and think fondly of everyone in it Smile. foxes, yes, gotta love 3 year old logic Grin. GingerIvy, your rationing ideas sound brilliant and I love the idea of a winter prep list! Also agree with you and Cotswold about how concerning the news is lately Sad.

Cag, you have so much going on it's not surprising you forgot the form. Is there any way you could get a few hours to yourself (or even half an hour) and write a list of what really really needs to be done and then go from there?

mumofazoo, family time sounds lovely.

Big wing flaps to mermaids, Afresh, celeste and Einstein.

Will be back on with links in a bit.

Thanks for the offer of the pointy stick stressy but if you will be so kind; will you just thrown some cold and flu, a (hot) hot water bottle and a cool 'n' soothe in my direction. It would appear that this is no allergies.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 20/08/2017 21:00

Oh dear. Brew cold and flu drink and a hot water bottle for you Einstein.

Ta da

Dryer on

Cagliostro · 21/08/2017 07:50

Morning all! Not the best start to the week as I was up at 4 with an anxiety meltdown (me, not the kids!). It's so silly but my friend gave me one of those experience vouchers and it's lovely, but I get so stressed trying to arrange stuff like that. She doesn't have kids yet and sometimes I think she forgets it's not easy for me to get 'time off' - with DH working really unpredictable shifts (that are arranged with very little warning) and next to no family support. Which isn't a nice thing to be thinking about when I will be giving birth sometime in the next three months! Anyway it's been really hard to find a time that she, the venue and I can all do. I feel horribly ungrateful as it's an awesome present and I know she'd hate for it to upset me. I just feel so panicky about it, even once I realised a possible solution I couldn't get back to sleep. I hate my brain. Angry :(

Still, a new week, and I need to try my best to get a little more routine/structure into our lives. So I'll wake DD up at 8 - she will have had 12 hours sleep Shock because she actually fell asleep really early, having been at a sleepover the night before (stayed up till 5 apparently Hmm :o). So tempting to let her sleep later but that won't help tonight.

Other plans are to make sure they do their morning routines earlier - we have been fairly decent at making sure they do their list but often not until they've been up for ages which somewhat defeats the point Blush. Also laundry, I'm a bit behind again, but determined to at least do some at the right times so that we can get back on track ASAP.

Then we start science too, which will be the biggest challenge I think - just getting them both sitting down to concentrate and possibly write/draw. Need to clear the table before we start! Blush I'll get them to do some Prodigy maths as well as I want them doing computer stuff daily now and I just upgraded to proper membership with a schools rate. No other plans except an SN soft play event this evening with some friends which will at least serve as a good incentive to get things done. If we get our work finished I may sneak in an afternoon nap.

Must go and get Bolognese out of the freezer, since we have nothing else in for lunch!

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 21/08/2017 07:51

Can I join? I have a few weeks to get my house organised and clutter free before (hopefully) starting a new job.

Cag - do you have a local CAB who can help complete DLA forms? They know exactly how to describe your situation to tick the right boxes and will make sure you don't miss anything off that could make a difference.

There is lots of help re: EHCP on the skybadger website. www.skybadger.co.uk

celeste4 · 21/08/2017 08:32

Morning all,

Cag what is the experience voucher for then? Your day sounds busy especially with lack of sleep. Hope you have a nice day.

Cagliostro · 21/08/2017 09:04

She's taking me to afternoon tea celeste :o which will be lovely especially as it's something a bit more grown up before baby arrives. It's just the stress of arranging childcare for it that's getting to me. I may have it sorted now but I absolutely hate asking for favours

Welcome irritable or do you prefer ibs? :) Thanks for link and I will probably see CAB, also there is someone in the council who specialises in DLA for kids and will work through the form if I can get an appt. I have met him before but we didn't have the diagnosis then. I have some experience (yay...) having done my own PIP form earlier this year

Still haven't got lunch out of the freezer but DD is awake and is almost done with her morning list, DS has done his maths too

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 21/08/2017 09:30

Welcome Irritable - fab username Smile!

Cag, I can completely see why that would be stressful. It's the kind of thing that pre- children I would have thought was a lovely gift to give. However, I also have a DH who works odd hours, sometimes unpredictability and can see how organising it would be very stressful Flowers.

Well I have had a rubbish start to the day. Both kids at childminders so I can go and do (mandatory) study day. Turns out I should have had a pack to complete first. Nobody bloody told me and since I am new had no computer access so booked over the phone so couldn't have known - apparently a sign flashes up when you book online.

While a day to myself would normally be a lovely treat, I now need to spend time rebooking this course (with added childcare cost) go into managers' office and check I won't get into trouble and find somewhere to pick up this pack. Very annoyed that I have paid for holiday childcare to potentially achieve nothing AngryAngryAngry.

Hi all - going to join again if that's OK? A bit overawed by all of your productiveness - need to pull my socks up this week and get some stuff doneBlush In my defence we were on 'holiday' last week, although only a staycation to try to save some money.
Really impressed by the home schooling on rationing - lasting for two weeks on wartime meal times....love to hear how it goes. Made wartime carrot fudge with DS last year - and it was utterly disgustingShock!
Going to start with the 15 minutes in main bedroom now - hope everyone has a good daySmile

Cagliostro · 21/08/2017 10:47

Welcome back garden

Aaaargh stressy what a farce, annoying enough when something is messed up but not even your fault at all!

Afreshstartplease · 21/08/2017 13:18

stressy that sound stressy!

gardenin welcome back

cag i would struggle to get a day free for an experience day too. The more dc you have the harder it becomes! I can only think of two occasions this year when ive left the house with no dc in tow and one was a parents evening!
