what do i do with all the ancient bedding my mother in law has given me? I keep thinking maybe one day I will make some kind of thing out of these terrible 70s sheets but I won't will I?
I should get rid of clothes after how long of not wearing something?

Donate it to textile recycling.

I get rid of any garment I haven't worn in one year.

tortoise · 10/01/2007 12:04

Sheets i think can be donated to animal re-homing places.

ipanemagirl · 10/01/2007 12:07

Thanks! And the hundreds of paperbacks I haven't read but might one day read?

you could sell your stuff on ebay or i believe there is a recycle website where you can exchange stuff?! you may as well make money out of it and treat yourself?! / there is also a book place where you can sell yours second hand amazon and another one.

hana · 10/01/2007 12:45

expat - is there such a thing as textile recycling? can you point me in the right direction? thanks

fizzbuzz · 10/01/2007 13:05

Yes there is such a thing as textile recycling, we have a tank thing down our road...although that is no help to you of course!

Contact local council, they will know.

Lucycat · 10/01/2007 13:07

You could use 'Read It Swap It' for the books and get something you might actually want to read!

twocatsonthebed · 10/01/2007 13:11

Do you have a local freecycle group? Someone will want the sheets for something! Or if not, the animal shelter definitely will.

I put anything I haven't worn for a bit away in a suitcase, and then if I don't miss it, I get rid of it. Things very rarely make it back to the wardrobe...

ipanemagirl · 10/01/2007 13:45

many thanks for all good suggestions - I looked at flylady.net for a burst of inspiration as well. It's just getting rid of stuff I find so hard, genetically a hoarder....

Re animal shelter... ... some years ago when we were really really poor (as opposed to really poor like we are now.. ).. and all our bedding was second hand and ancient, given to us by family. Then we saw some of those 70s style candy-striped sheets being used in a kennel on Pet Rescue.... the same as we were sleeping on! The very next day, I started a catalogue account (which haunts me to this day and is now much larger!!) and got us some lovely new bedding!

Cappuccino · 10/01/2007 13:52

as for paperbacks do you have a book crossing venue near you? where people leave books and pick them up for free? cafes etc sometimes have these in a little pile.

you could leave them there... so you could use it as a resource for you as well, you never know what other books might turn up!

JackieNo · 10/01/2007 13:53

If you need some inspiration to start clearing your clutter, try this book , which is great - you can ignore the feng shui aspect if you like, and it's still fascinating and inspirational, imo. (maybe order it from the library, so you're not accumulating more clutter)

JackieNo · 10/01/2007 13:57

(or try the 'ask Karen' section of her website)

Lucycat · 10/01/2007 14:03

I'm good at chucking stuff out, quite ruthless in fact (a little too ruthless at times when I discover I do need some of it }

Shall I come round with a roll of bin bags?

ipanemagirl · 10/01/2007 14:55

thanks again, I will try to find out about book crossing, my mother sent me details of greenmetropolis for selling books, seems like a good way to make a little money - I just think I would spend forever doing it and not getting anything else done.
I think feng shui is interesting. I purged our main bedroom a couple of days ago and it is such a pleasure to be in it now and dh is very happy!
