We have also got a cupboard full of tinned tomatoes and soups etc that can be used.

I am going to start making my own bread, I've just bought a breadmaker with some christmas money.

Also, I've got a free sample of soapnuts to try today and if I like them that will knock a substantial amount off my bill. £9.00 for a massive bag.

Shopping list looks good

Only thing I would say, is you've got a lot of mince-based meals in there. You could ring the changes by making a veggie lasagne?

MrMiaou is still cross-eyed with fatigue - got back from Glasgow at 1am then I kept him talking until 2.30am - but he says he will post later with some more ideas if you like!

Lookin' good though!

Miaou · 21/11/2006 11:23

ooooooh let me know how you get on with the soapnuts - I keep meaning to get some to try them out but keep forgetting

expatinscotland · 21/11/2006 11:25

Pulses. We eat a lot of pulses. I do keep a few cans to hand to use in a pinch, but the dried ones are even cheaper and you can buy them in bulk in many ethnic food shops.

Also, IME, chicken gives you more run for your money than mince if you buy it whole. I can get two full meals out of one and a soup as well.

Radley · 21/11/2006 11:32

Thank you for your replies.

Yes I noticed that they were mainly mince based meals.

I love veggie lasagne, do you happen to have a recipe.

I am quite adventerous with food, but the only thing I cannot eat is celery. I think it's time to stop pandering to dh and get the kids eating different things.

Also do you have a recipe for pizza dough?

Have just started using soapnuts. Generally happy with them but a bit iffy sometimes with the whites.

expatinscotland · 21/11/2006 11:48

Radley, your bread machine may have a setting for pizza dough.

We do buy a couple of boxes of cheater pizza base, though, b/c it's so cheap.

gscrym · 21/11/2006 11:54

If you can, buy a cheap slow cooker. Good for really cheap cuts of meat and uses a lot less electricty. We got ours for about £15 from poundies.

Bozza · 21/11/2006 12:01

How much was that in total radley? I agree with there being too much mince on the meal plan.

What are you trying to achieve - a lower bill, a better/healthier diet?

Miaou · 21/11/2006 12:08

Radley, there is a pizza recipe on the other thread - hold on and I'll c&p the tips here!

MrMiaou is going to put a recipe on here for veggie lasagne later on.

Miaou · 21/11/2006 12:14

From the other thread - bread recipe:

1.5 lbs strong flour
1 tsps yeast (the one you add to flour, not pre mix with water)
about 3/4pt warm water (half boiling half cold)
2 tsps salt
1 tsps sugar
1 tblspn olive or sunflower oil.

If you have a food processor or kenwood chef you can cheat, bung the whole lot in and mix adding the water gradually until all the flour in mixed in. Either put in a loaf tin, or shape as required on a baking tray. Leave in a warm place for about 40 minutes to 2 hours until about twice the original size, then bake for 25 to 30 mins at 170 degrees.

"Should just add that the recipe above makes three 16inch pizza bases - something between thin and crispy and deep pan. If you've got some malted flour of some sort (doves farm malthouse is wonderful!) use 2 parts white and 1 part malted, superb taste.

Simply roll out the bases as you require and top with whatever you fancy. My basic tomato sauce is 1 tin of tomatoes (13p) 1 tube tomato puree (26p) garlic, black pepper, herbs to taste. Blitz in processor, voila! Makes enough for 9 pizzas."

Radley · 21/11/2006 12:18

Fabulous, thanks for that recipe
