gatorade how long have the books been unread for?

bring are the stuff at your parents sentimental items? If yes, then don't even think about them yet as sentimental stuff, as you know, are the hardest to declutter. Smile

PelicanBriefs · 13/01/2015 19:22

I once put a blue post-it sticking up on the top of every unread book on the shelves. The theory was, I would see them easily next time I was looking for something to read... Turns out, there were reasons they were all unread. Every time I chose one, I would find something about it that put me off, and read something else instead! After years of denial, I got rid of them.

I know what you mean about not wanting to waste money on re-buying, but be very firm with yourself when you read the cover of each one. Are you burning to read it RIGHT NOW? No? Hmmm.

PelicanBriefs · 13/01/2015 19:23

P.s. I used up the over-long carrots tonight, so all the others will be sleeping standing up. This is starting to sound cruel!

CoolCadbury · 13/01/2015 19:29

no pelican the carrots are standing to attention, waiting for you to notice them and be eaten.

PelicanBriefs · 13/01/2015 19:33

Grin just as well they're no longer hidden behind the chocolate then, or they could have had a long wait! I promise I will say goodnight to them before I turn in.

Pointlessfan · 13/01/2015 19:36

Gatorade I think that's a good idea for books.
Yes I have a lot of boxes at my parents. I live in fear of them either returning to me or going through them and finding something unfortunate like condoms or cigarettes! I kind of wish they'd just chuck them. I haven't needed any of the stuff for at least 15 years so I don't think I'd miss it.

Violettatrump · 13/01/2015 19:50

After complaining that he didn't want to sort his room and didn't care if his room was a mess, DC1 was hilarious sorting through his folder of momentos. I kept saying 'oh you must keep xx' and he'd cheekily reply 'it doesn't bring me joy' and chuck it.

Also after complaining on MN about DH's piles yesterday, they have magically disappeared! And without anasol Grin. Very odd! So far he hasn't really passed comment on my mammoth sorting however I have now learnt that he has been passing Marie Kondo web links to his friends Grin

Starface · 13/01/2015 19:56

Welcome bring. I was a passive MNetter pre kondo, now active. You're fitting right in.

Great multi MK link post. Also loving the carrots. Tee hee.

My kondo of the day is to list ebay items. Working y'see. Takes over my life...

violetta Sometimes just the sight of a tube of Anusol is enough to make the piles disappear!

Hermione thanks for the digest link, I've bookmarked it, so I can wade through whenever my mojo slips! Wink

Theonlyoneiknow · 13/01/2015 20:18

Just marking my place, I am a serious hoarder and this year I must change that!

vinegarandbrownpaper · 13/01/2015 20:21

Has anyone got a photo of this carrot thing? I am not sure about the joy but I can see endlessly opening the fridge and shouting at the carrots for not standing up. Google was no help!
Am feeling a bit annoyed as everything is organised downstairs and there's no grit for my pearls of frustration to develop around so I'm deliberately leaving things undone as a consequence. Is that weird?

inadaydream · 13/01/2015 20:37

Catching up yet again on thread due to difficulties getting onto MN recently - lots of blank screens and nothing else most of today so my coffee times were bleak Sad

Need to read from page 12 (reminding myself more than anything) and onwards during coffee time tomorrow!

Not much kondoing here as both kids down with a nasty virus so Dd at home (instead of school) and Ds has turned into Velcro baby!

DH did do a little kondoing tonight though he didn't realise it - he knows I am reading about tidying up and is enjoying the benefits of what I have achieved so far but that's as much as he knows! He cleared out his pint glass shelf, left the ones he uses regularly on the shelf organised nicely and had packed away the ones he loves but are too nice to use/dispose of! His collection has taken years, they are all memories and he has a story for each one - the shelf looks lovely now and I have room for the nice latte glasses I bought with christmas money that go with the lovely coffee machine he bought me for Christmas Grin

Coatandhat · 13/01/2015 20:41

Pointless you can get those baskets like Lakeland's for a fraction of the price here www.wilko.com/plastic-storage/wilko-storage-basket-with-carry-handle/invt/0328744 Hope the link works - have never done it before!

Starface · 13/01/2015 20:43

Just bought a Shredder with money made from amazon trade in. Sidling up to paperwork...

misscph1973 · 13/01/2015 20:56

Fridge storage: I have 2 fridges, as the fridge in our rented house was not big enough, and as it is a fridge-freezer, it was easiest to get another fridge rather than replace, also because it fills out the space where there was a tumble drier which belonged to the previous tennants.

Anyway, now there is the meat fridge and the veg fridge ;) Makes life very easy and I don't forget food in the back of an over stuffed fridge. I have since found that the kid's Lidl peperamis for lunchboxes stacks great in the doors with a rubber band around them. And that the 2 veg boxes in the meat fridge are great for a) a cheeses and packs of cold meat and b) cream and yogurt. Basically I have discovered that veg drawers are much better for smaller items that tends to get lost in the back of the fridge. And especially cream and other things that really need to be stored cool are best stored in the bottom of the fridge where it's coldest. Although some fruit and veg benefit from being in the fridge, they don't go off as easily as milk and dairy. Veg and fruit could go on the top shelf.

Also, used ice cream tubs are the best for the freezer/fridge, they stack really well if you have the same types. I much prefer them to Tupperware and similar.

nutsinwinter · 13/01/2015 21:13

Welcome bringme!

Didn't do much Kondoing today but more than I've done in the past week, so I'm pleased enough. Sorted out the battery drawer which had turned into a junk drawer < glares at DP > and a couple of shelves where he likes to leave crap. Also tidied the last of the Christmas books and decorations.

Now just need to organise the pickup with the charity shop so we can put things back in their places again (got huge boxes waiting to be picked up so I've had to find places for them, otherwise we'd not be able to get in the front door!).

Raring to go for tomorrow actually. I bought a plate rack with the aim of using it to stand baking trays on their sides, so I need to see if that works or if I need to come up with another solution.

Also for tomorrow: not really Kondoing but still, planning to Kondo all the fluff out of the dryer, I want to take off the panels and give it a really thorough clean. We've had it for something like 3 years now and I shudder to think what it's like inside. Don't want to risk a fire!

Night all!

Violettatrump · 13/01/2015 21:21

Just looked at the linkie thanks. I like the idea of a crap basket for each person but also partly feel they just need up learn to put items away after they have finished using them. The minimalists ted talks 'a richer life with less' rang true though. I'm not sure I could box up my whole life and get rid of anything still boxed after 3 months/weeks but kondoing things right down seems a good compromise for me.

Does anyone know where to locate an older kondo thread link to procrastination? I keep looking but can't see it for some reason.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 13/01/2015 21:26

No Kondoing here today as I've been a bit under the weather. I was looking for clothes to wear to lie about the house and realised that since Kondoing I don't really have any scruffy clothes. It made me feel a bit nervous at first tbh but then I realised that wearing nice, brightly coloured clothes did make me feel a bit better. Possibly a bit woo but it did bring a teeny scrap of joy to a rubbishy day.

Pointlessfan · 13/01/2015 21:27

Thanks for the link, coatandhat. Can't believe I didn't think of Wilkos, I am yet to find something I need that they don't sell!

RandomFriend · 13/01/2015 21:27

Marking place. Some great links!

Pointlessfan · 13/01/2015 21:50

Actually, reading this tonight has made me think that the fridge might be achievable if I got a few containers and labelled them. I think my carrots would be happier standing up - do they stand in water? If so, which way up? Am I overthinking this???

Violettatrump · 13/01/2015 21:55

Grin iqueen . It was avery weird coincidence!

GatoradeMeBitch · 13/01/2015 21:58

Honestly some of my books have been unread for 20 plus years! But if it's a choice between losing them or reading them, I'll read them! I think I will have enough to fill a three shelf bookcase, and handily there is one on the upstairs landing outside my door. It contains all of DS's children's books, but I can take those out because he hasn't looked at them in years.
