Greetings fellow Kondo-ers! Astonished to see how quickly this new thread is filling! Back Kondoing after Christmas break and house is really benefitting...was supposed to be starting papers as a new category...frankly, putting it off. DH has started....but I am prevaricating...must re read our beloved leader's wise words on papers and reboot my motivation...

JKSLtd · 12/01/2015 21:52

Empty christmas sweet TINS!!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/01/2015 21:56

Well, tonight I Kondoed bedding.

I've always had problems storing it. Some was in under-bed bags, and some in the hall.

In true MK-style, however, the Kondoing of DS' bedroom freed up an Ikea six drawer unit. I moved it into the dressing room and used it to store DS' bedding.

Last night I was trying to work out where to store our bedding when I thought 'I wish I had an old-fashioned blanket box'. I then had a lightbulb moment when I realised I have a plastic book storage box that is exactly like a blanket box. So tonight I rearranged the books into another box, and packed all our bedding away in the newly emptied box.

Also tonight, I made a slight breakthrough with DH. He brought some paperwork home with him and instead of leaving it in a random pile beside the couch ggrrrrr he asked me which folder it should go in. Result! Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!

Violettatrump · 12/01/2015 22:01

Aplace can you have a word with my DH please? He has piles Confused and a particularly large one in the kitchen for some reason!

Iqueen · 12/01/2015 22:11

I haven't done any kondoing today. I've been evangelising on another website! More Konverts! Grin

Ooops! I kondoed half a tin of beans from the fridge at lunchtime and the last slice of Christmas cake at tea-time. More clutter gone cleared. Wink

Iqueen · 12/01/2015 22:13

Violettatrump Anusol is good! Grin

CoolCadbury · 12/01/2015 22:15

oh well done aplaceonthecouch's husband. Gosh, you've waited a long time for that moment, aplace! Grin Long may it continue.

I've been thinking about the empty drawers and (kitchen) cupboards in my house. I feel a bit sad for them because they are out of a job and their sole purpose in life (ie storing things) has been removed from them. Sad

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/01/2015 22:17

Violetta yep, the kitchen worktop and beside the couch are DH's favourites too. I've started repeating at regular intervals 'look how clear the worktop/kitchen table is' and 'have you noticed how everything is packed away?' I think I'm trying to subliminally programme him into being an MK Konvert Grin

CoolCadbury · 12/01/2015 22:18

Iqueen Grin you do make me laugh. I must admit that whenever somebody writes my piles or husband's pile, I always titter.

ifitsnotanarse · 12/01/2015 23:31

My I join? Finally took the plunge (after much lurking on these threads) and Kondo-ed mine & DH' s clothes today. Tomorrow is set aside for the DCs clothes. Wednesday will be for all the baby clothes I've been holding onto 'just in case'. I have to face up that a third DC is not going to happen & just let go. But at least I'll get my box room back. [Smile]

Can I ask how long before the initial enthusiasm wears off & I have to work hard to keep going? Would really like to have purged the whole house by the 6 months target. However, have form for letting things slide Blush

Iqueen · 12/01/2015 23:32

CoolCadbury Glad I made you laugh! Bringing you joy, brings me joy! Thanks for your appreciation. Smile

Iqueen · 13/01/2015 00:05

Welcomeifitsnotanarse to The Cult!

I think the the first Kondo thread started in September and some posters, who started then, have more or less, finished kondoing. Woohoo!

It's hard to tell how many have completely lost their mojo, but a few have had a wobble with Christmas, NY, illness, etc, but have climbed back on the wagon successfully. Some managed to get their fixes even during the holiday days! Grin

The real joy of MK's method is that every category/sub-category kondoed, leaves tidy/empty space and much less STUFF. Because we can see success immediately, whether a small category or large one, the excitement continues... so long as the cleared areas remain uncluttered. These clear areas are a constant visual reminder of what our goal is.

Many people find that it gets easier, as their mindset changes, and discarding decisions seem to become simpler.

Having done your own and DH's clothes you will be reminded, daily, of what you have already achieved, and your goal! Smile

Once you have made a 'home' for everything, by discarding the crap things your don't want, need or use, and trained the family to tidy things away immediately after use, cleaning will be a breeze and you will never have to do massive blitzes again. Grin

You should aim at only bringing essentials into the home, or replacing things. In both cases, anything coming in should also see things leaving.

The reason we need MK is because we have been acquiring too much stuff and discarding too little. Sad

HTH

Violettatrump · 13/01/2015 07:14

Grin DH's piles! I mentioned last night that I was hitting ikea for a magazine storage container for him to get them out of sight. I'm sure he will kondo them at some point but he's only really stared kondoing his stuff/rooms.

Welcome ifitsnotanarese. How much stuff do you have? One of my friends has kondoed very quickly in two weeks, while I'm on two or three months. I had mountains of crap and have done the whole house twice except for photos/personal letters/momentos. DH is still do do study/finish garage and I can see he might need a hand.

Violettatrump · 13/01/2015 07:16

I've kondoed daily though - literally giving a bag or two or three daily to the charity shop/skip/friends.

Pointlessfan · 13/01/2015 07:17

DH reminded me we have an Ikea gift card for £150 that they gave us when we ordered our kitchen units. Very excited!!

Violettatrump · 13/01/2015 07:19

Still yet to roll clothes though. I'm a bit frightened of that

HermioneGrangerHair · 13/01/2015 07:56

Welcome ifits

I'm pretty bad for starting things then losing interest. I've been working on this for nearly three weeks, and done clothes, handbags, toiletries, and currently working on books. I agree with the others that working by category helps, because you knock out one category fairly quickly, and would feel the benefits even if you never carried on after that. But actually, moving on to the next category feels a bit of a novelty, so reinvigorates your enthusiasm.

When I've tried to declutter by place, it's been like digging in dry sand: crap just runs in from other areas to backfill the hole, so you feel like you're getting nowhere.

Stick with the thread... These ladies are pretty good for a pep talk or a few stern words, as the occasion demands. Smile

Iqueen · 13/01/2015 09:12

Violettatrump Folding clothes is probably the best incentive in MK's method because the results are immediately visible, everyday and remind us that as we progress, this is how our home can be. Joy, joy, JOY! [Grin]

I woke this morning and my mojo is back!

I am constantly trying to swim through treacle, instead of living! I need space - to move freely, to relax, to breathe, to do the things that bring me joy, to keep the house clean quickly and easily.

My hard-won disposable income deserves better than to be squandered on crap unnecessary STUFF, just because clever advertisers head-fuck me into wanting it.

iknowimcoming · 13/01/2015 09:26

Morning all! I shall procrastinate no longer, today I AM GOING TO KONDO MY CLOTHES! I have done dd's and ds's and am well chuffed with the results but have been delaying doing my own but today's the day, after a brew anyway ......... Brew

PelicanBriefs · 13/01/2015 09:36

OK, was I hallucinating or does the great MK talk about standing up carrots in the fridge? Have just re-Kondo-ed the fridge (it needed a second bash after the Christmas onslaught, to get it back to basics) and some of my carrots are too tall!!! The short arses are standing in a glass, looking somewhat confused by the whole experience. Maybe they are in too much shock to feel the joy yet?

I found myself placing the onions in an old egg box. Do I need help?

Pointlessfan · 13/01/2015 10:12

Violetta - I was worried about it too incase they all ended up creased but they haven't and I am wearing things I haven't worn for ages because they were out of sight and out of mind but now I can see them.

Pelican - onions in an egg box is a good idea! I also stand broccoli up in a cup of water as it keeps for longer. I haven't done the fridge yet though. I'm not sure I will as I know DH will just shove things back in any old how and I'll get cross with him! Lakeland sell some lovely clear pull out containers for organising the fridge but they are expensive. I think something like that might be the only way to organise DH in the fridge department!

lockie1983 · 13/01/2015 11:19

So I came in to say I was in a foul mood - house like a tip, couldn't get going this morning and now at work. But catching up has made me stop being a cow and realised that what I need to do is: remove the bags that are leaving us, get rid of the empty bookcases and move on to the kitchen.

Pelican I am throroughly cheered up by your confused carrots.

Welcome ifits I've done categories up to Kitchen in a fortnight (I will probably have to do a second round) and am still pretty motivated. I love that moving category keeps it fresh Hermione is totally right in how she explains it.

ItIsntJustAPhase · 13/01/2015 11:36

I have been trying for years and years to get rid of stuff effectively. This is the only thing that is working.

Iqueen · 13/01/2015 12:11

ItIsntJustAPhase Ditto.

I'm drawing the line at standing carrots in the fridge - an MK step too far. me thinks. Hmm However, I do like the idea of some 'filing' in the fridge, and a lot, in the freezer. Kondoing the freezer should lead to less food sneaking to back, or hiding under other things... thus saving money! Grin

Gnome134 · 13/01/2015 12:14

Another lurker here! Decided to start with my sock and knicker drawers last week while waiting for the book from the library. The folding was a complete revelation! Definitely recommend doing some folding. I discovered stuff I had forgotten about, and it looks so much tidier. Managed to get dh to do a bit too. I think my downfall is going to be with the sentimental items. Have far too much stuff stored in the loft and am hoping the Kondo mindset will help with this!
