Could you compromise? I usually get fed up of the cards first as they look untidy, fall over and I can't dust so could you take them down but leave the tree up?

Pasithea · 29/12/2014 19:16

Sick of the Christmas mess lol.

CoolCadbury · 29/12/2014 19:22

Thanks for reminding me about the house having a place for the rolling pin, ohhelp - trust in the method. Smile

Yup, pointless cards are down today and tree down tomorrow. We don't have any other decorations.

Well I've managed one set of bookshelves - some stuff in recycling and a box of books, tapes and cds for the chazza. Still got the second set of shelves which actually has far more books on it to go. I actually got rid of more books than I originally thought I would. I realised I actually didn't like some and was only holding onto them because they had been given to me by aparticular person, or they were classics and possibly made me look intellectual or I thought i ought to like them! Need something to eat, then may do some more books or indulge in some clothing folding/putting away.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 29/12/2014 20:29

I tried to KonMari the kitchen drawer today but it still isn't right. I don't know why but it hasn't given me joy so I know I'll need to go back to it.

greeneggs yy I'm working through DS' clothes that were in the wash. They yielded another small bag for the charity shop.

I am loving his pj drawer. It was so messy before. Now all the pairs are matched and rolled. It's so neat. As for his wardrobe, it's still tidy too and I love being able to see his uniform all ready for going back to school. It's amazing the small things that bring joy Smile .

Violetta999 · 29/12/2014 20:41

Mostly cleaned today - so washed and hung more curtains and scrubbed the kitchen doors - sadly no konmaring.

Here's my house to do list for January

  • sort garage/study/DS's room
  • touch up paintwork throughout
  • wipe skirting boards/door frames/doors so free of children's finger prints/marks
  • clean windows inside/out
  • roll clothes
  • sort photographs (massive job)
  • sort old love letters and other special items
  • sort inbox of paperwork
Violetta999 · 29/12/2014 20:44

Not really heard the word chazza used for charity shop before. I like it! Which region uses it?

wejammin · 29/12/2014 20:46

if Konmari keeps her carrots in the drinks bit of the fridge door, where do you suppose she keeps her drinks?

I got rid of a load of ribbons tiny boxes and packaging materials today. The Freecycler was delighted with it and I was happy to see it go. I have never crafted in my life and can't imagine when I'd have ever found the time. Grin

Pointlessfan · 29/12/2014 20:53

Argh! I seem to spend half my laugh clearing the dining table. It's because DD is only 9mo so we always have wipes and things around. I am trying to put them all away after each meal but it doesn't always happen.

PonderousTortoise · 29/12/2014 21:15

Right I have read my way through the thread and ready to join the pilgrimage to the promised land of Konmari Clutter-free loveliness again...

Read this article today, about how to set good goals. Good point about doing something however small towards your goal every day. Am absolutely knackered today so only managed to put a wash on, in aid of having more clothes clean and ready for sorting, but at least it's something.

Opheliabumps · 29/12/2014 21:34

I have just done a mountain of ironing, I've been busy doing a course which has taken up to 10 hours a week, so the ironing has got out of hand. It's not finished but the pile is now manageable, and I managed to get rid of quite a few things that don't bring me joy.

I've also konmari'd my pyjama drawer, it looks lovely and even DH is impressed (although we did have a stand up row earlier about lids for missing tupperware containers - he's a natural hoarder, this is going to be hard work).

inadaydream · 29/12/2014 21:46

Wow has taken me 2 days to read through this thread! Each time I thought I got to the end another page appeared. I have been reading in between manic decluttering whilst various relatives have had the kids.

All very inspiring meaning I now have 10 bags to go to the charity shop tomorrow.

Another childminder here so as well as my kids toys I also have toys for the business which I set up three years ago. All of which have now gone into those charity bags! The children I look after are the same age as my own children and my own are really good at sharing so have decided that was the first place to start getting rid of things!

Dd (5yo) also had a sort out of her stuff before Santa arrived and sent 5 bags of stuff she no longer loved to the charity shop (so a whopping 15 bags out in the last 10 days once the 10 bags go tomorrow Shock).

I downloaded the book 2 weeks ago and I am still trying to read it (but feel like I am wasting time reading as I just want to keep on decluttering stuff!!).

I think I maybe addicted to getting rid of stuff now and worried I may end up going from hoarder to minimilist in 60 seconds Wink

Intrigued about the clothes rolling as I haven't yet got to that part of the book. Did declutter all clothes recently as I have dropped a dress size and both kids had a growth spurt recently so not currently worried about clothes just yet - they are all neat in drawers with ikea drawer compartments but am certainly up for reorganising again if things can look neater!

Looking forward to having a beautiful looking home full of things that bring my family joy, rather than despairing at the piles of crap everywhere and wallowing rather than getting off my butt and doing something about it Smile

APlaceOnTheCouch · 29/12/2014 22:43

I think taking 'before' and 'after' pics really helps.

I forgot to take any 'before' photos today. So even though I've filled another charity shop bag with DS' clothes; filed 40 DVDs into a folder; de-cluttered and re-stored items in the downstairs loo, and emptied and rearranged the kitchen drawer; I don't feel as though I've achieved as much as I did when I had pics to hand so I could see the difference. Tonight I am going to read some more of the book for inspiration. Pretty soon I'm going to be dreaming of KonMarie-ing Xmas Grin

standingonlego · 29/12/2014 22:50

Not much house action here today (but delighted it it bin & recycling man day tomorrow), just wanted to say thank you to everyone who commented on liking my pink kitchen wall - made me smile lots Grin

Fabulous progress and the thread is flying so fast, inspiring stuff !

NotQuitePerfect · 29/12/2014 23:20

Bought the book today. Cannot wait to join you all! Xmas Smile

inadaydream · 30/12/2014 00:02

Omg looked on YouTube for folding/rolling tips for clothes - who knew there would be so many?!?! Discovered how to fold a fitted sheet though - something which has always baffled me (just normally a crumple up and chuck in drawer!!).

GatoradeMeBitch · 30/12/2014 00:08

It's funny that Kondo mentions that purging belongings can have a strange physical effect. I felt so suddenly unwell tonight I had to call 111 for the first time in my life. I'm sure the two aren't related, but it is the kind of odd coincidence she mentions in her book!

I decided to take it easy tonight, but tomorrow I'll deal with the hanging items. I have a feeling that will be easy, I don't think I've looked at anything on the rail in over a year. Then I have an actual binbag full of black socks to go through Grin

I am mustering up the strength to join, are there photographs in the book?

BriarRainbowshimmer · 30/12/2014 08:44

Are you OK Gatorade?
I actually felt unwell too when I went through some unexpected sentimental stuff I found and threw out some bad memories.

Always no, there are no pictures in this book. There are in the others she has written though and I hope they will be translated too.

lilttlemarvel · 30/12/2014 08:56

Yesterday I dropped off a boot full of stuff to the charity shop and made a start on filling the boot up again (xmas decs - much more needed today).

I also treated myself to a couple of items I've wanted for ages that brought joy - some good quality (Global) fish bone tweezers and a kindle paperwhite (I have a kindle - will pass that on to DS - just realised that a back-light would be a very good idea for me). It's odd - even though I've wanted them for ages something has been holding me back from getting them.

Today I really need to start chipping away at the paperwork and my computer files...as well as the ironing.
