Cool, we have a hanging rack thing from Ikea and there is a little bucket which hangs from it where I store things which are too big for the cutlery drawer eg wooden spoons and rolling pins. Failing that any tallish pot could store it upright on a counter top.

MsBug · 29/12/2014 13:40

A bit like this

(hope link works!)

CoolCadbury · 29/12/2014 13:47

Thanks, MsBug, the problem is I hate having things out on countertops - I even used to put my toaster in the cupboard before living with DP but compromised. Maybe I could put it with the baking stuff?

CoolCadbury · 29/12/2014 13:50

That looks nice, MsBug. I don't know why but I was imagining a rack hanging off the ceiling Confused. And it's off the counter top!

MrSheen · 29/12/2014 13:58

I've just gutted my wardrobe. I still have too many things, about 10 wooly jumpers and 2 sweatshirts but I probably only wear 5 of the jumpers and one of the sweatshirts is an 'emergency' one for when the other is in the wash. a few tops I'll never wear, 3 white shirts (feminine, butch, smart) 2 black ones (one femme, one butch) about 5 plaid ones (all butch, obviously) and a shit load of t-shirts and vests (have culled quite a few)

I've thrown away a lot of long sleeved tops that I save for cold days as it's freezing today and I'm not wearing one.

I have some gorgeous stuff for charity (french connection/monsoon/fennwrightmanson/joules). I'm never going to be the person I thought I might become when I bought them.

I have 2 pairs of heels, 2 pairs of brogues , 3 pairs of boots, I pair of trainers, one pair of toms and some awful ballet flats I'm clinging to in case I go out in the evening and don't want to wear heels.

I now have space in my wardrobe for my work uniform, which is nice.

I can't cull my blazer collection. I just can't.

I haven't got the book yet, so I'm not rolling. Confused

MrSheen · 29/12/2014 14:05

Coolcadbury, could it go vertically in another cupboard, like with pans or something. Maybe it could stand up in a spaghetti hat to keep it in place.

didireallysaythat · 29/12/2014 15:02

Four modest boxes packed for oxfam, one run to the tip (we missed recycling last week - seriously overflowing with cardboard here !) and about to head down the garden to kondo the greenhouse while burning bank statements from the last decade. I think I'm going to revisit linen tomorrow as I've found more I genuinely had hidden so missed on the first pass.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 29/12/2014 15:05

All you brave people tackling books! That's last on my list. I've sorted DS' books and got a bag for the charity shop but I know I'll struggle with my own books. They are my downfall. I looove them so much. I think I'll do toiletries/skin care today instead.

Prior KonMarie-ing gave me great joy yesterday. I was going to a family event and I needed to wrap a present. Since I'd already KonMaried all the wrapping paper, sellotape, scissors and pens, I was able to go straight to the correct wrapping paper, wrap the present and write the card with no drama. It gave me much joy! Xmas Grin

CoolCadbury · 29/12/2014 15:48

mrsheen what is a spaghetti hat, am intrigued and how did I go through life without ever having one? And do those 10 wooly jumpers all spark joy? I love that you have femme and butch tops.Smile

didireally MK says to get rid of anything that you missed at the first pass.

aplace that's lovely. I haven't sorted my present/cards/wrapping stuff yet because I have no idea where to put them.

MrSheen · 29/12/2014 15:56

jar not hat Blush

Not sure if they spark joy but the space in my wardrobe is sparking joy. I also have 1.5 empty drawers.

Starting on pjs now

MrSheen · 29/12/2014 16:40

Can someone tell me what to do with old clothes that aren't good enough for charity?

I have a pile of 'textiles' , ripped jeans, old socks and tights etc. My council website says they take textiles in the recycling bin but it says to make sure clothes are clean and folded and shoes are paired, so I don't know if they mean they take complete crap.

Starface · 29/12/2014 17:15

I learned on an earlier thread that you can give textile as rag to some charity shops. Ask first and bag separately. I did that with a load of fabric off cuts and old clothes that sound similar.

MrSheen · 29/12/2014 17:25

Thanks. I'll give that a go. I have to go to a charity shop anyway and the recycling bin is already rammed.

writingbeagle · 29/12/2014 17:32

Checking in after Christmas. Have been spreading the joy of Kondo over Christmas - my DM bought the book too Grin

I think that what I did before Christmas means we aren't in such a chaotic place, which is good, but much still to do. Next need to do my jewellery, shoes and sports kit etc. Made a good start on DD's room on Christmas Eve though. I'm finding that its easier to keep on top of putting the washing away because it all has a home to go to.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas.

Starface · 29/12/2014 17:46

I can totally see why she says it takes 6 months. And that is if you don't get especially distracted.

greeneggsandsocks · 29/12/2014 17:49

I wasn't going to buy the book because I thought I was already pretty 'there' in terms of getting rid of stuff/staying tidy...but I relented, started reading and even more stuff has gone!

I am doing items as I read the book so clothes are done (and a shelf full of shoes, boots and handbags that I thought I would keep until the day I died as an old lady), books and papers next...

She makes some interesting points about keeping paperwork from courses, I have a huge pile, the courses that were fantastic I remember like they were yesterday and can still rattle off what I learnt and it was 10 years ago, not really sure why I was keeping it all tbh.

Later in the week I am going to explain the concept to DD and sort her room out...

Lovethesea · 29/12/2014 17:50

Got DH to go through our DVDs yesterday (after taking the tree and decorations down in minimalist enthusiasm). Two bags and random bits in car boot waiting for the village charity shop to reopen on Friday (aaaaaaaagh a whole week!).

I've got the kids working on their new craft projects while I sneak out broken toys, puzzles too easy for them and random Christmas gifts I know won't be touched.

We've done a tip run as the recycling bin was groaning, that's now been emptied so I can start again! Threw out DD's old socks today as I bought her a new set of larger socks. Ignored lots of nice things in the shop as I am decluttering! When tons of stuff has gone I will be able to see what, if anything, we need.

Lovely.

greeneggsandsocks · 29/12/2014 17:52

MK says to get rid of anything that you missed at the first pass. I did find that tricky tbh as a lot of stuff was in the wash. I am applying the 'do I love it' rule before the item goes back upstairs though and at least 1 top so far is going from the tumble dryer to the charity shop.

listentotheman · 29/12/2014 17:57

Marking place!

ALittleFaith · 29/12/2014 18:35

Re rags - another option is steam railways! So my Dad tells me. They use them for cleaning first then lighting fires. If there's one near you they'd appreciate them.

Christmas decs down here. The house looks huge! All decorations kondoed so next year we'll be getting down what we actually like!

We're getting the Xmas decorations down tonight, earliest we've ever done it but we're fed up of the clutter and from trying to stop DD from pulling the tree over!
