Is DYSON the final word in vacuum cleaners?

We had a Dyson for 6 years. Loved it and no problems until it suffered a fatal accident

DH went out and bought an Electrolux cleaner for £80 just before Christmas, and I've never felt it was quite as good. Last week it just stopped working. We thought it was the fuse but it's not. The shop we bought it from has since closed down. The local repair man will charge us about £50 to look at it.

I think I'm just going to go and get a new one and be done with it. Am hankering after another Dyson.

Mumsnet Jury - Do you think they're really head and shoulders above the rest?

I much prefer a sebo upright.

nailpolish · 11/10/2006 11:46

no way

Miele are much better than dyson

HowwwlidaymumsHauntedCruises · 11/10/2006 11:47

Horrid things!
Struggled with mine for years until it blew up last year.
Man in teh vaccuum cleaner shop agreed with me that they are pants esp for allergy/asthma sufferers ie us and recommended a Mielle. Best Vac I've ever ever had!

wordgirl · 11/10/2006 11:48

I hate my Dyson.

belgo · 11/10/2006 11:48

I have an upright dyson that is soo old, one of the first models (how old would that make it? twelve years or so?) and it is still great. Also have a pull along dyson, 7 years old, also in perfect working order. The only better vacuum cleaner I have seen is an industrial one.

HENRY! HENRY! HENRY! HENRY!

Which? magazine doesn't rate them. And mine was a pain in the bum. I've now got a Henry on the grounds that anything builders use to suck up plaster dust must be good. It's fine but could do with something lighter as we live in a three-storey house.

HowwwlidaymumsHauntedCruises · 11/10/2006 11:52

My miele is very light! god how sad am I? I love my vac! Note to self to go get a life!

Gillian76 · 11/10/2006 11:52

But doesn't Henry hurt your back? I thought an upright would be better.

the dc01 we had (bought 10 years ago) was - but not so happy with this years replacement - still good - but not as good.

Bugsy2 · 11/10/2006 12:06

I've got a really old DC02, which I love to bits. I had it serviced by Dyson recently as it had broken & it is now virtually new (as they replace all broken or damaged parts) for the very small sum of £35!!!!
I've never tried other ones, so can't compare - but mine does a damn fine job.

satine · 11/10/2006 12:08

Our DC01 is now 9 years old and still fine. I read in Which that the newer Dysons are considered v good for perfomrnace but they say that they have 'concerns' over reliability. May be since production was moved to the Far East?
I'm torn between another Dyson - since I love my current one - and a Miele, when this one finally gives up the ghost.

EnidVorhees · 11/10/2006 12:09

I think they are totally overrated

the old ones were good quality but the new ones are made in malaysia and are pants

Sebo for me

Twohootsandapumpkin · 11/10/2006 12:09

We have the animal one and it's soooo heavy (fell on me the other night when I was vaccuming the stairs and I have a whopping bruise on my shoulder!). imo it's too heavy esp for stairs etc.

We used to have a miele (again the pet one for animal hair) and it was CRAP. Sorry but it only lasted about 2 years - think it might have been because DH once vaccumed up something liquid with it though as it was never the same again - men

I do love the dyson suckability (is that a word?) but if they were lighter they'd be better.

On the subject - can anyone recommend a light weight compact vaccum for stairs/crumbs etc? Would prefer an upright one to a hand held thing. TIA

chocolatemummy · 11/10/2006 12:10

Dyson are rubbish, if you go to any repair shop or tip the Dyson are lined up! and their products get slated in Which

We have a Henry which is really light and runs around after you and its great and my MIL bought a Miele last year which is so powerful it lifts the bloody carpet! lol

batinshoes · 11/10/2006 12:13

I had a DC05 for ages which was great but it burnt out. Decided against getting another but got an LG cylinder which is rubbish so dont get one of those.

KathyMCMLXXII · 11/10/2006 12:15

I love my Dyson, but we had Henry at college and I agree they are the biz.

EnidVorhees · 11/10/2006 12:16

twohoots - cod swears by some lightweight upright thing that she won on mumsnet once

Bugsy2 · 11/10/2006 12:17

Dyson will fix any machine regardless of the problem for the microscopic charge of £35!!!! So when your machine breaks down, just ask for an engineer's visit & save yourself the hassle of buying a new one. I can't believe people are throwing them out because they are broken - you've all got far too much money in your wallets!

theHAUNTEDhazelnut · 11/10/2006 12:21

I love my DC07 and I would get another if this one goes wrong. I have never had a hoover which has cleaned up like my Dyson
