Is DYSON the final word in vacuum cleaners?

We had a Dyson for 6 years. Loved it and no problems until it suffered a fatal accident

DH went out and bought an Electrolux cleaner for £80 just before Christmas, and I've never felt it was quite as good. Last week it just stopped working. We thought it was the fuse but it's not. The shop we bought it from has since closed down. The local repair man will charge us about £50 to look at it.

I think I'm just going to go and get a new one and be done with it. Am hankering after another Dyson.

Mumsnet Jury - Do you think they're really head and shoulders above the rest?

Oh thanks Enid - wonder what is was?

Blossomhill · 11/10/2006 12:22

I bought a Henry at the weekend (from recommendations on here) and it is fantastic.
Ds's carpet looks brand new after one hoover

flack · 11/10/2006 12:26

I found with a Dyson it just seems to suck up SO MUCH MORE than any other VC. Do Henry/Miele/Sebo really manage to get as much up?

PretendFriend · 11/10/2006 12:29

Dyson have started doing a 5-yr guarantee so Which are now prepared to recommend them as their unreliability won't cost you anything.

(I have an upright Dyson which is mostly a very expensive doorstop. My Miele cylinder is an angel )

From Which:

Dyson has responded to criticism about the reliability of its vacuum cleaners by offering an unprecedented, free five-year guarantee on all its upright and cylinder models. In June, Which? revealed that for the seventh year in a row Dyson had come bottom of our reliability survey for upright vacuum cleaners. According to our readers, one of the main reasons for an upright Dyson needing repairs was a split or broken hose. Dysons were also prone to breakdowns because of problems with power and suction. Dyson also came bottom in our reliability survey for cylinder cleaners.

Guarantee
The five-year guarantee, which applies to all cleaners bought in the UK and Ireland, covers both labour and machine parts but not belts and filters. James Dyson says: ?We're all about research, development and constant improvement. Because of this, our machines are more durable than ever. People know our machines work better and they know we have excellent customer care. Now they know that they have our support for five full years, too.? Dyson?s new guarantee has stolen a march on its competitors. LG offers a free three-year guarantee, while Bosch, Numatic and Sebo offer two years and Pansonic and Hoover just one.

Sorry but free repairs or not I want a vac that works! Couldn't be bothered with constant repairs.

Gem13 · 11/10/2006 12:33

Miele cat and dog for us. Much better than the Dyson too. Shame that it uses bags though from a green angle.

PretendFriend · 11/10/2006 12:43

Oh I agree about preferring one that doesn't go wrong!

Best buys in current tests were basically Miele

1 M Cat & Dog
2 M S4510
3 M S4210
(4 Dyson 07 Animal)
5 M S380
6 M S5210
(7 Dyson 14 All floors)
8 M Parquet & Co
9 Bosch 71810
10 Bosch 17800

Miele really are the dogs bollocks (Which don't seem to test Henrys though)

PretendFriend · 11/10/2006 12:47

Oh they do, I missed it - Henry is a DON'T BUY according to them

(Classed as "very poor" at cleaning carpets, catching pet hair and retaining allergens)

CheesyFeetcomingtoGETyou · 11/10/2006 13:05

I've had a Dyson DC01 since 1999 which has been the dog's bollocks. I realise that I am in the minority though

HowwwlidaymumsHauntedCruises · 11/10/2006 13:07

You can compost the bag though! We chuck it all on the compost heap Gem.

Piffle · 11/10/2006 13:11

Our dyson has died also
We have a new miele hepa
dogs bollox honestly

MadameMorticiaMills · 11/10/2006 13:14

We have something called a central vacuum cleaner. It's basically a hole in the wall where you shove your hoover pipe, and it all gets sucked into a large bin in a cupboard in the utility room.

Genius!

hermykne · 11/10/2006 13:55

MIELE

any "design" product that now has an exteneded warranty is worht it. good design should mean dependibility as well as aesthetic good looks!

tiredemma · 11/10/2006 13:57

I hate my DYSON- its so bloody heavy. It discourages me from vacuuming upstairs.

KellyKrueger1978 · 11/10/2006 13:58

I love my dyson, its the best hoover we've ever had. We had a henry where I used to work, and it was crap!

Xena · 11/10/2006 13:58

I had a miele and when it died I bought the lightest dyson and thought it was better!

Gillian76 · 11/10/2006 19:41

You all like these cylinder cleaners. All the Miele ones I looked at on JL website were cylinders. Do they do an upright?

Never considered a cylinder really...

ilovecaboose · 11/10/2006 19:45

Dysons are crap ime of several. Won't have one.

alex8 · 11/10/2006 19:50

I would never buy a dyson again. Worst vacuum I have ever owned. It has no suction.

Kittypickle · 11/10/2006 19:54

DH came with a free dyson, it was rubbish (the dyson not DH) I really should have learnt my lesson but for some reason in a post natal hormonal moment I replaced it with another Dyson. It is so rubbish I mostly use my rechargable electric sweeper thingy as it does a better job.

jangly · 11/10/2006 21:42

Think cod won of these G Tech

ilovecaboose · 11/10/2006 21:47

the problems I had with them is that they were so incrediably heavy, the suction was poor, and they kept breaking and had to be taken for repairs.

I have an upright panasonic now (uses bags), that I have had for a couple of years. It is really good.

Twohootsandapumpkin · 12/10/2006 13:21

Thanks Jangly - will investigate. I find these compact things much better for the stairs and picking up crumbs/food debris off floor from DD!

CMac · 12/10/2006 13:27

I was desperate for a dyson (well, as desperate as you CAN be for a hoover...) but it's tosh! Only good thing is the fact that it doesn't have a bag, though sure there are loads like that now. Its sucking power is okay though not as fantastic as i'd expected, but the main issue I have with it is the build quality - bits just keep falling off it - and trust me it doesn't get enough use to be suffering from such wear and tear!

noddyholder · 12/10/2006 13:29

miele definitely better esp the cat and dog one
