Is DYSON the final word in vacuum cleaners?

We had a Dyson for 6 years. Loved it and no problems until it suffered a fatal accident

DH went out and bought an Electrolux cleaner for £80 just before Christmas, and I've never felt it was quite as good. Last week it just stopped working. We thought it was the fuse but it's not. The shop we bought it from has since closed down. The local repair man will charge us about £50 to look at it.

I think I'm just going to go and get a new one and be done with it. Am hankering after another Dyson.

Mumsnet Jury - Do you think they're really head and shoulders above the rest?

That's the one I had - cat and dog and didn't last me 2 years - see previous post. I blame DH really p

redsky · 12/10/2006 13:51

I've found that the trick to keep the dyson working really well is the filter things - if you change them regularly it continues to suck well.

SPACEdoutzombieCADET · 12/10/2006 14:05

i had 2 dysons, a dco1 about 10 years ago, whioch packed up, then a dc04, which also packed up, it hurled itself down the stairs.
for upstairs i have an ancient second hand kirby which is great and hoovers the stairs whilst upright.
downstairs i have a cheapo electrolux which is just fine.

mummydoc · 12/10/2006 14:08

sooo pleased to find others out there with "dyson rage" mine is rubbish, the attatchment hose thingy has no suction when you attatch any of the attachments - so useless for hoovering up spiders etc. and to be honest not particularly good on the carpets, cannot wait to break it altogether and get something different.

mouseman · 12/10/2006 14:12

Iliterally threw mine out into the garden in a fit of rage a couple of weeks ago. Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish, I am never buying one again. It didn't pick up the dog and hair and we have just spent £80 odd on an electrolux and it is full after 2 hoovers round the front room - just proved how muchthe dyson left behind.

SPACEdoutzombieCADET · 12/10/2006 14:14

do you remember the court case wherte a man sued dyson because his vacumn cleaner literally attacked him?

artist67 · 12/10/2006 22:33

Mine only lasted two years, and had loads of repairs. Now got a cheap £50 argos vac that does a better job. Same principle but needs emptying more often.

Twohootsandapumpkin · 13/10/2006 11:12

I think I may sue too. Am currently sporting a very large bruise on my bingo wings from the dyson falling on top of me from upstairs!!!

pepsi · 13/10/2006 12:11

had a couple of dysons, all broke, now have upright sebo. Very happy with it.

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 13/10/2006 12:26

Anyone tried the new handheld Dyson ?

i have a dyson dc08 and it's fabulous! it sucks so hard it sticks to the floor!

i hate upright hoovers though, so awkward and bulky, always get a pull along one myself.

MrLSG · 13/10/2006 13:33

Get yourself a Roomba , and then you can put your feet up (or be on MN) whilst it does the vacuuming.

SPACEdoutzombieCADET · 13/10/2006 13:35

twohoots..ouch, i think the same thing happened to this gentleman, except it knocked him down stairs too and he was quite badly injured.

Twohootsandapumpkin · 13/10/2006 15:16

Zombie - thanks for the tea and sympathy At least it means I keep my bingo wings covered up!

I want a Roomba NOW!!!! how do you empty them though - can't be bothered to watch the video...

MrLSG · 13/10/2006 17:46

The back 1/3 is the dust box which just pulls off and you empty it into the bin. It's not massive so you really need to do it after every clean - but only takes seconds.
If you object to doing it manually, Karcher do one which empties itself , but it is 4 times the price (at that's a lot less than it was).

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 13/10/2006 18:03

Does anyone have experience of a Bissell 2-in-1 hoover? And are the Miele ones lighter than Dysons?
We have a Dyson but I don't know how long it will last now we have floorboards, doesn't seem to adjust to different surfaces (or am I being thick?) so the base is getting knackered. I'm quite new to hoovering, DH used to do it when we both worked. Sucks fine but is very heavy. The cloth nappy user in me says get Dyson to service it but the newly-skilled housewife in me says buy a new one when it goes wrong .

skerriesmum · 13/10/2006 18:06

Another vote for a Roomba, we love ours. Good for any kind of flooring too.

Alibaldi · 13/10/2006 18:08

I've had two Dysons an dc03, bought in Holland was brilliant - cylinder as opposed to upright both times by the way. Last one was the Animal which was brilliant. As long as you clean the washable filter suction was superb. had to give it away as came to the USA. Now have a bagless upright Hoover, which is good, but so heavy. They don't have many cylinder vacuums here and those they do are expensive.

SoMuchToBats · 13/10/2006 18:13

My DC07 really sucks! I mean it has really good suction, much better than my previous vacuum cleaner. But one of the attachments broke, and was really expensive to replace. I have heard that Miele are really good, but do they do an upright cleaner? I wouldn't consider a cylinder one as they always make my back ache.

PretendFriend · 13/10/2006 19:54

If you can lift a Dyson, using a Miele will be a doddle! They are really light, have a loooong nozzle thing and lovely swivelly wheels. And you can park them on a stair without them trying to kill you.

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 13/10/2006 21:32

Swivvelly wheels is good, used to have a cylinder that always tipped over if you pulled too hard in the wrong direction. (According to Dh, hence buying him a Dyson.)

CastsSpellsWitchySpells · 13/10/2006 21:37

Has anyone mentioned Maytag yet? I love our Maytag - a bit noisy but VERY good at sucking stuff up, and has a little light that shines over the bit being cleaned, and little indicator lights that tell you when the bit of floor you're doing is clean. Had ours about 5 years so far and no probs with it.

iliketrees · 13/10/2006 22:49

I had a Dyson for years (mum's recommendation) and I hardly used it cos it was so heavy and put me off cleaning totally (didn't need much encouragement there actually) - downstairs maybe if people coming, upstairs basically never. Just got a new Miele and I am loving it - I even think about getting it out when the floors don't look that awful just for the sheer joy of zooming around - so light, swivelly wheels, powerful bla bla bla......it's changed my life, sad but true

bottomburp · 13/10/2006 23:10

i have a henry, bought by my parents went got first flat and i LOVE him.all our neighbours used to borrow him when their dysons broke esp after xmas when hoovering pine needles up.my mum brought her dyson round when we got our dog and it didnt pick up anything after i had vacuumed with henry - hurrah.

my Aunty is a huge fan of SLOW vaccing, she vacuums really slowly and picks up loads more.but she has grown up children!
