Heartfelt and huuuumungous thanks to Goth for being such a superlative, consistent and professional thread leader throughout May (and wow to all those fantastic round-ups every night).

If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

Flylady link here.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new then trying to spend 15mins decluttering and the babysteps is the most. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers very very welcome!

ToffeeWhirl · 17/06/2014 16:58

Well done, SC. Most attractive! Grin

slackcabbage · 17/06/2014 17:09

And it works retrospectively I see Shock

Like Engels am fickle supporter too so in absence of Ireland, hope I can swap back to English flag for Thurs ....

Getting geared up for big match tonight against Algeria (starts in 10 mins)

Came home from school meeting just now and everyone is out supporting " the Red Devils" - flags and bunting are up, eveyrone is congregating at local bars, bicyclists with wigs and tridents, even wing mirrors are covered in the Belgian flag!!

Wd love to go out and mingle but dd shattered!

One amazing good thing happened today - school meeting was actually positive for once!! Shock Smile

Dashing to catch start of match so bbl later to catch up with personals!!

Applying tri-colour face paint just now - dd nearly got the angle wrong and became a Germany supporter without realising it Grin

"Allez, allez, allez les Diables Rouges!"

Thank you Toffee Grin!!

carpe I hate packing with a passion! (And I may have taken unironed clothes with me to UK last weekend Blush )

Thanks for the brew to get me through the day! Felt more awake once I got to work. bitchy there is actually a foodstuff in the Netherlands which translates as breakfast biscuit but is more like a cake. Apparently it's very low in fat (though am sure the honey and caramel variety I buy is not doing anything for ds's teeth!).

Going to try and get some marking done to ight when dh takes ds to bed. Right now he's practising guitar while I mn supervise ds.

CarpeJugulum · 17/06/2014 17:44

Oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck.

DS has developed a mystery rash (pharmacist believes post chicken pox viral thankfully!) just before the holiday.

And I've got an interview on Thursday. Thursday. For the job I want but was sure I couldn't get coz the interview was when I'm on holiday. But I emailed them, and they would be happy to see me Thursday. Thursday. Fuck!

BitchyVstheUFOs · 17/06/2014 18:00

keep eye on hopefully now fixed leak
find important paperwork

sort out ds' lunch
decluttering in my room... one day, one day it will be tidy!!!

In addition

Add more crochet projects to the to do list ffs

find hook for finishing off a crochet project
watch frozen whilst hooking
Early night -Important!
File some paperwork

Swanhildapirouetting · 17/06/2014 18:17

Did some more decluttering today. Another BIG bag of books, last chance before dh gets home. They are all my books Sad but I need to make space somewhere for LIVING!!!! Lots of books left btw, so need to feel sorry for me Blush

Cleaned kitchen and utility
cleared out ds2's room and put all redundant toys in a big box with a lid for visitors (didn't dare chuck them)
hoovered ds2's floor
3 loads of laundry
cooked pasta bolognese bake with cheese sauce using yesterday's leftover pasta
decluttered some more stuff from my bedroom, cardigans and suchlike
sorted a stationery drawer

3 kids to school this morning, put together a new pencil case from scratch for ds1 who had submerged his in science lab sink

lay down

swept floors downstairs
dusted the cornices round the cooker

fielded arguing children - the most unproductive argument ever, ds1 telling ds2 that he was not going to enjoy his reward trip to Thorpe Park because the rides would be too scary Hmm So mean. Ds1 seems obsessed by ds2's participation in school, and clearly is very jealous Hmm

Swanhildapirouetting · 17/06/2014 18:18

sorry typo, so NO need to feel sorry for me Blush

slackcabbage · 17/06/2014 22:01

Baby-step no.18 for Wed 18th is: reading the Flylady eleven commandments ... but be warned newcomers, that 10 and 11 are a bit 'sick-bucket'. We should all be doing more of 8.

We are in Zone 3 this week : The Bathroom and One Extra Room (June 15 – 21) here.

Declutter in Zone 3 for 15 minutes a day!

Detailed cleaning list here if you are at that stage. (Apparently Wednesday is desk day (paperwork). Who knew? Perhaps it's a sign that I should actually read the detailed cleaning lists once in a while!)

Wednesday's mission is here. Bathroom = wash bathroom rugs, shower curtains and accessories. Other room = another fling boogie.

Wednesday's daily focus is: anti-procrastination day.

The monthly habit for June is drinking more water.

To summarise the above, today's flight plan can be found [[www.flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-120 here]] and will update itself automatically.

Lots of honking of horns after a Belgian victory tonight!

Hope you don't mind me just posting links, v short personals and stumbling off to bed tonight. I'm a wee bit -intoxicated-- tired Grin.

On a serious note, Toffee I'm sorry, I've only just read your post about your friend's funeral tomorrow. If I don't get back on here before then, I hope it brings as much comfort as possible in such very sad circumstances. Sad Will be thinking of you x

Bitchy and Swan you are both wonder women!! Those lists!!!!

Hope you get your full quota of shut-eye tonight Bitchy

Congrats on decluttering the books Swan (something I find very hard to do - esp cookery books somehow)

That's brilliant news about the interview Carpe. We'll be rooting for you!! (Less good news about your ds's mystery rash though - hope he recovers in time for departure!!) And yes, understand packing conundrum. Hard to decide what to wear here on a daily basis with the weather being so variable, never mind for a holiday!

Hope you manage to slay part of the marking pile today Engels

Eyelet so sorry I called your dd a 'ds'!! Glad the pt progressing well! Where there's a will there's a way and all that!

NOt surprised you feel drained atm Blue after throwing yourself so wholeheartedly in to school campaign etc. Hope you can take a bit of time out for yourself.

Glad the fireplace worked out Alice!!

Big waves to whoknows and everyone else!

G'night all!

My handiwork (and proof that no red cross was put on it Grin). Still have that black bit to finish, but needs a bit more brushdowns tomorrow and then I'll finish that.

June 2014: half way through the Flying year, fledglings get themselves in gear!
slackcabbage · 17/06/2014 22:42

Looking good Alice!! The prep is always hard work when painting brick-work I find.

OP posts:
AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 17/06/2014 22:45

I just sit here looking at it thinking "so cool!" Kind of like when I put the wood flooring in and kept walking out into the hallway so I could see how nice it looked. Grin I'm easily pleased, obviously.

BitchyVstheUFOs · 17/06/2014 22:49

Ime it helps to be like that Alice i am feeling like that about a new ball of wool that I accidentally acquired bought when I was out shopping today. It is very pretty in colour and is working up lovely. Grin

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 17/06/2014 22:52

Bitchy I'm like that about knitting stuff as well. I think it's that sense of accomplishment that really pushes that feeling. What are you making?

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 17/06/2014 23:08

I will say this much - do NOT brush down the inside of your fireplace with a stiff brush, breathing in the soot. Hack, hack, cough cough. I blew my nose and it was just black. ew Don't want to think of how much of that gunk is in my lungs now. Hmm stupid me. I want to just vacuum it up, but it's a bit late to be running the vacuum (not sure the neighbour would appreciate it). So I'll have to do it in the morning.

BitchyVstheUFOs · 18/06/2014 08:02

Which project Alice? I have about 15 on the gone Blush

Swanhildapirouetting · 18/06/2014 09:46

I am really envious of you and Alice Bitchy I seem to have utterly lost the ability to do any crafty projects, just drained by dealing with the children's projects. I know I have it the wrong way round, they should be inspired by me, rather than me being creative on their behalfs.

Dh is back today and rang me up in a sentimental loving sort of way saying how much he was looking forward to seeing me, to which I replied I was in a very bad mood and he better not expect everything to be all lovey dovey and calm/tidy/food here. Bit mean of me, I need to show a bit of wifely dedication Blush to the sacred hearth etc etc.. Just feeling frustrated that due to all the 0ut of blue problems of last week I didn't get more done before he returned.

done
ds2 to school, and also managed to get him to do his English homework with the minimum of fuss and to early Library (literacy intervention first thing) He is in an excellent mood, the World Cup is making him sunshine boy first thing..
ds1 to school still arguing that he doesn't need deodorant
dd has a mild temperature today which coincides with Dad's return so I am wondering whether she just cannot face school today. She is being very demanding, lying in her bed talking about arrangements for a sleepover tomorrow that I really cannot face her having but she is determined to invite this particular girl over due to cinema on Inset Day etc etc.. The politics of girls' friendships is sooo tiring..

recycling
rubbish all out

washing upstairs
another wash about to go in
bed stripped

swept garden path

todo
buy food
wash up two sink fuls of dirty pans
whisk books away before dh sees the pile
try not to get cross with dd
cat food bowls clean the area
bring in wet washing from outside
take a deep breath and be MINDFUL! Everything is fine really, I am very lucky.

toffee so so sorry that it is your friends funeral today, and so sorry for her poor sister who now has such a lot of coping to do.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 18/06/2014 10:43

Swan some days I have to push myself to get started on something, but I'm always glad I did afterwards. Other days it's "I'm going to sit here and drink a Brew and ignore everything now that the DCs are finally in bed." Grin

Second load of laundry in the washer, 2 more loads to go. First coat of whitewash on the interior of the fireplace, another to go once first has dried. Washing up done. Vacuuming done.

Now sitting with Brew and making a few phone calls and doing some paperwork. Then off to put away some clothes and tidy up the dining room before I do the second coat of whitewash.

BitchyVstheUFOs · 18/06/2014 11:01

ta da
dry ds' uniform for this morning
Put a load of washing on
put hair up all girly
DW loaded and running
fold/iron two baskets worth of clean laundry
Check internet stuff
empty kitchen bit that has been soaking with soda crystals overnight to destink it - still needs a bicarb paste applied to the top edge though Hmm
Sit on hold for 20 mins and take 2 mins for sorting out what was needed - stupid automated systems
Pack ds stuff for weekend
Pack ds' training kit
put ds' holiday in bath tub to de stink
Ring CAMHS Confused
Empyt out car folder whilst trying to find ownership documents Hmm

BitchyVstheUFOs · 18/06/2014 11:32

swan I have to have a certain amount of compulsroy rest (aka sitting still per day) for medical reasons. Craft is the only wayu to get me to sit. Still? yeah still not figured that bit out. I tend to combine it with tv watching/a film too so multitasking which allows the brain to be cheated into thinking it has done a huge amount. I personally wish i could find the time to sit and read a book, but i feel really really guilty if I attempt that Hmm

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 18/06/2014 13:17

And that's the fireplace finished. Happy happy me!! Grin
