How many loads of washing do you do a day?

LadySlatternly · 05/02/2014 21:06

I am a Mum of two young girls, with a husband who works away during the week and brings home minimal laundry but creates a bit when home! (Running gear etc).

He says I make my life harder than need be by doing too much laundry.

I wash beds once a week (unless girls wet the bed), towels about the same, or twice a week but bath mats and hand towels more...girls uniforms daily. I do, on average, 2 loads of laundry (big machine though) a day. Often more though if blankets or sofa covers need doing.

How much do you do? Trivial issue but bugging me as my husband constantly bangs on about it.

I do loads of laundry by the way but the house is in perpetual chaos and mess!!!

< shrugs >

I have enough towels to able to do that, and I like clean fluffy loveliness around me when I get out of the shower. They're not the same oooompfy softness once they've been used the previous morning / evening

Fluffy40 · 06/02/2014 09:00

Two adults , two teen boys at least one wash every day.

Pascha · 06/02/2014 09:29

Ooh a Competitive Washing thread. Lovely Smile

Who was it up there who said about what if we reduce our loads by x2 a week to save electricity and water bills? I'd rather spend the money than faff about sponging uniform and reusing soggy towels.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 06/02/2014 09:47

I do a full load of towels every day. 5 people shower in the morning, ds1 and 2 shower again after football training, I shower if I have been to the gym, so does DH and DD. I dont want to use someone elses wet towel

elQuintoConyo · 06/02/2014 10:15

2 adults, 1 2yo.
Bedding 1 x week/1.5 werks
Towels weekly
2 x multi-mixed clothes (none of us own anything white!)

DS at nursery has a little blue/white checked overall/dress type thing that they all wear, that comes home in his bag every Friday covered on paint with pockets full of stones!

We live in a hot country with lots of sun so drying is easy, but I still can't be arsed to clean any more. And, quite frankly, we can afford neither the leccy nor the water to use it more often.

ballroomblitz · 06/02/2014 11:31

I agree pascha. Each to their own but I like my clean towels every day, clean pjs to put on night and since I co-sleep I have to change my bedding quite a lot as I refuse to lie in a bed smelling of milk boke.

Haven't known Northern Ireland to have a water shortage because of the weather in a long time.

Only thing this thread has made me consider is next time I replace my washing machine I'll get a bigger drum.

HenriettaTurkey · 06/02/2014 12:12

We have just upgraded from a 5kg drum to an 8kg drum. We now do 3-4 washes a week, down from about 5. I love it as we can now fit all bed sheets in one load, and we can also wash things at 30c and they actually get clean! This is quite a novelty for me...

DH, DS (2) and me.

We air towels etc after use and wash when they get dirty. Bed sheets every week or two.

We re-wear trousers/cardies etc 2-3 times, but undies, socks & tops are changed every day.

(I also rarely iron as I buy wisely, and don't let things sit in the drum for hours before airing/tumbling.)

LadySlatternly · 06/02/2014 13:36

Well. Seems lots of people like a chat about laundry! Wasn't expecting that!

After your messages I think i'll try and cut down on laundry. I think as a society we've all got too 'clean obsessed' and what people said about preferring to use the money for other things makes sense.

Watch out world, we're going grubby....

My loads are always full except the wool/delicate.

Up to 5 a day probably seems excessive but with a baby who explodes out the bottom end and has reflux out of the top he gets through 5 outfits - drenched and stinky - a day often. His bodily fluids usually end up on me too. Toddler is at an artistic nursery where full body experiences of paint are encouraged. Sigh. She used to get through 5 outfits a day too, but now 1-2. Very very occasionally something can be reused but usually it's caked, spattered and sodden.

Otherwise we only wash things when actually dirty.

Bicnod · 06/02/2014 14:42

1 load a day. Me, DH, DS1 and DS2.

HappyAsEyeAm · 06/02/2014 14:50

I would say about 10 loads a week for 2 adults, 1 6yo and a toddler.

I have enough changes of school uniform that I wash only once a week, on a Friday night.

I wash all of our bedding once a week.

Bath and hand towels maybe once every 4-5 days. Tea towel from the kitchen is replaced every day.

Most loads are full loads. If they're not, I do a half load programme.

Mycatistoosexy · 06/02/2014 14:58

One load of clothes every other day. Usually one load of bed sheets and one load of towels a week. So about 5 loads a week. Me, DH, DS (18mo).

People sure like washing don't they?

We should have a competitive cleaning thread too! I clean all the kitchen tiles every night. My dad looked at me as if I was mad when I mentioned that!

WillSingForCake · 06/02/2014 15:48

These threads drive me mad. It's so bloody insular to think 'but I like clean towels every day' or 'it's my money, so I'd rather spend it on running the washing machine than sponging off a stain'. The impact on the environment from creating electricity is huge, and wasting it is so thoughtless. But fuck that eh, doesn't matter that the world will be destroyed for future generations, as long as your towels feel nice and clean Hmm

About five loads a week.

Three small children, one at school.

Towels get dried on radiator or heated rail so last a while, we are clean when we use them after all. Ditto bath mat. I suppose I wash them every week to ten days.
Bedding I think is fortnightly. Pjs every few days.
All clothes do two days unless obviously marked. Clean underwear every day obviously.

Coats get washed if covered in mud, so as and when but on average twice or three times a year.

I accept we're a bit on the scruffy side with bedding, but I choose to spend time doing things with the children instead.

Bunbaker · 06/02/2014 16:03

About 4 loads a week - 2 adults and one teenager. Bedding and towels get changed once a week.

Hulababy · 06/02/2014 16:43

Can I ask those who wash every day...when do you do it?
I just wouldn't have the time, seriously. Mornings are too busy getting up, showering, dressing, breakfast and work - I don't really have enough time to do all that before leaving tbh and breakfast is on the go. So couldn't sort a load to wash then - and wouldn't want it sat in the machine all day anyway.

Home - earliest ever home is well after 4 - usually nearer 5, somtimes later. I then have school work to do, food to prep, and just other stuff to do. I really wouldn't want my evenings spent sorting washing.

Ours gets done Fridat afternoon my half day at work or sometime on Saturday - ready to be ironed on a Sunday morning.

ThePearShapedToad · 06/02/2014 16:52

2 bins. One white, one colours. (Some people have 3 and I am jealous of them, for pale colours)

When bin is full, scoop up an armful and throw into machine

Takes 2 mins. Could do whilst kettle is boiling. How does that take a long time? Confused

Hang out washing 90 mins later on aired during ad break. Take off aired following morning whilst kettle is boiling for morning pot of tea.
Iron whenever have the time inclination Smile

JugglingFromHereToThere · 06/02/2014 16:52

I'm shocked at how many do more than one load a day - especially those saying 3 Shock

I aim to put a load on every day but in reality I do less.
I find more than 2 in any one day rather un-manageable.

I should think we do between about 3 and 5 loads a week.
I should do the beds more often Blush but I often bung a towel in to make up a load so the towels are usually nice and fresh Thanks

GreenShadow · 06/02/2014 17:29

When all the DC are home from university, it's roughly one load a day (large drum and always full).
When the older two are away, it's usually only about one load every other day.

OneMoreThenNoMore · 06/02/2014 17:30

I chuck a load in whenever I have a spare minute, usually either first thing in the morning or after the dcs have gone to bed. It sometimes sits in there for a few hours overnight after the cycle has finished, as I'm often busy doing other things and forget about it.

I don't have a tumble dryer so I have to keep on top of the washing, otherwise I don't have enough space to dry it; if I had a dryer I would probably have a different routine.

bonkersLFDT20 · 06/02/2014 17:32

pear No way does our washing dry overnight. It might just about be dry in 24hr if we are all at home ie heating on.

MarshaBrady · 06/02/2014 17:34

One a day at least, otherwise it backs up.

Two some days depending on what goes in.

ThePearShapedToad · 06/02/2014 17:48

I must admit, my apartment is very warm and well insulated. Probably helps cut down on the drying time!

MrsDavidBowie · 06/02/2014 17:50

I get 2 loads done before 9 am .....have a very warm utility room and area under the stairs so everything gets dry really quickly.
Takes me ten minutes every day to fold and put away.
I only iron for an hour once a week.
