How many loads of washing do you do a day?

LadySlatternly · 05/02/2014 21:06

I am a Mum of two young girls, with a husband who works away during the week and brings home minimal laundry but creates a bit when home! (Running gear etc).

He says I make my life harder than need be by doing too much laundry.

I wash beds once a week (unless girls wet the bed), towels about the same, or twice a week but bath mats and hand towels more...girls uniforms daily. I do, on average, 2 loads of laundry (big machine though) a day. Often more though if blankets or sofa covers need doing.

How much do you do? Trivial issue but bugging me as my husband constantly bangs on about it.

I do loads of laundry by the way but the house is in perpetual chaos and mess!!!

Saturday/Sunday -5 loads: whites; kids clothes; our clothes; towels; wool. I change the beds every 2 weeks.

Monday-Friday - 1 or 2 loads as needed.

2 adults & 2 kids (ages 9 & 6) here.

MrsOakenshield · 05/02/2014 21:33

bedding - rarely, once every six weeks? DD's less, unless she actually wets it. It's winter, we're not sweaty.

Towels - once a week technically, but maybe once a fortnight

clothes: 2/3 coloureds, 1 whites a week

I absolutely refuse to become a slave to laundry. If MN is the norm then far too many people have no idea what 'dirty' really is, and are extremely wasteful of water, energy, money and time. For what? You know you don't actually look any cleaner than anyone else?

I do about 2 or 3 loads a week I think.

ballroomblitz · 05/02/2014 21:50

2-4 a day Blush Me, one child and one toddler.

Uniform needs washed everyday as ds seems incapable of eating through his mouth and not his clothes. Toddler creates constant mess.

My main items would be towels. I like to use clean towels every day normal bathing/showering. Ds has swimming lessons once a week, dd swimming class with me once a week and we all go on a Saturday so that increases the washing a good bit.

Lovepancakes · 05/02/2014 21:50

Mrs Oakenshield I'm with you. Washing towels after every use earlier in the thread- why? I'm really one for cleanliness but would only clean towels after one use if a guest came. We wash ours maybe once a fortnight and they still seem perfectly clean

ItStillLooksLikeRainDear · 05/02/2014 21:54

If I don't do 1-2 a day I end up with 20 loads to do the next day!

Beds every two weeks, more in the summer
Towels once a week
Bath mats when they look like they need it not often
Dont have uniform anymore but when they did, they changed the shirt everyday, jumper and skirt/trousers once a week unless they were really dirty.

All in all we do about 4/5 loads a week, for the three of us.

DontmindifIdo · 05/02/2014 22:04

One load a day most days, 2 on some.

DS is still pre-school age though, he comes back from pre-school covered in muck from the garden/paint (at least they use washable paint)/lunch splatters. Everything has to be washed daily for him, DD is a baby and we do get the poo explosions that mean she often goes through several outfits a day. And the bibs, and the mussies.

DH is a cyclist, and his kit needs washing regularly (it's so stinky I often end up doing half load washes of that because I can't just leave it until I've got enough for a full load, and it needs washing on 30 so can't be bunged in with most normal loads).

Bedding gets done officially once a week, towels the same.

FlyingDucky · 05/02/2014 22:05

Bedding weekly
Towels every two weeks
Swimming and sports stuff, uniforms daily. I like my kids to smell freshly laundered.

Dh and I wear same stuff a few days running but kids get clean clothes and pyjamas every day.

7-9 loads a week?
Scared to count...

cuppachai · 05/02/2014 22:05

2 adults, 1 child, at least 2 loads a day. Constant.

laylow · 05/02/2014 22:05

2 adults, child at school and newborn.

I am on ML and do 5-6 full loads a week.

I change bed sheets once every two weeks Blush. I love the feeling of clean sheets but cannot seem to change them every 7 days.

I change bath towels once a week.

I change hand towels every other day.

Dc wears a clean shirt every day to school and has three jumpers and four bottoms.

dh wears a clean shirt to work daily.

I must be a true slattern - 3 loads at the weekend and that's it . Our bed is changed every 2 weeks and I do take the king size duvet to the cleaners to be washed and ironed . Kids ' beds every month or so . Towels every fortnight . Kids have a couple of sets of uniform each - trousers and pinafore and more shirts .

I do rehear stuff and hang it in the wardrobe "dirty" which many seem to frown upon and rewear my exercise kit if it doesn't smell Wink

intheround · 05/02/2014 22:15

So, those of you that do several loads a day, is each load full? We only put on a load if it's a full one. Too expensive otherwise.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 05/02/2014 22:22

2 adults and 2 dc (8 and 5) here.

I do 1 load a day weds - sat, 2 on a tuesday (extra swimming stuff) Sunday (extra rugby stuff!) and usually 3 on a Monday (my day off so I change the beds and towels).

The loads are always full. I dry all the clothes on our indoor line in the utility room, but use the tumble dryer for towels and bedding in the winter.

Meglet · 05/02/2014 22:25

intheround no, I do smaller loads on a mini wash most of the time. White + lights, darks or reds. Hotter washes for towels and sheets though.

When I tried to cut back and do bigger loads I ended up with too much laundry to dry on the airer, so lots of it got smelly (and I ran out of certain clothes, work stuff, sports bra etc), using the tumble dryer just cancelled out what I'd saved on using the washing machine less.

Mintyy · 05/02/2014 22:27

6-8 per week. Family of 4, no nappies. I refuse to believe that we are dirty.

But always full loads. Unless woolies.

MrsCakesPremonition · 05/02/2014 22:30

On an average day I do 0 loads of laundry.
Across a week I do 8-10 loads.

Mintyy · 05/02/2014 22:32

But I'm very old and had a grandmother who had to handwash everything and a mother to whom a washing machine was a luxury, a tumble drier unthinkable.

So I belong to a generation who is happy to use a bath towel for 7 days and wear trousers/tops/cardigans more than once.

My dc have a clean shirt every other day and clean skirt, trousers, jumper or sweatshirt when they are looking grubby Grin.

FlyingDucky · 05/02/2014 22:35

I use Eco wash cycle on 30 deg for all clothes.
Wash whites , bedding and towels on hot whites cycle.

sweetkitty · 05/02/2014 22:35

2 adults 4 children 1 mancky dog

Two loads a day sometimes 3. Have a 9kg machine as well.

ballroomblitz · 05/02/2014 22:38

Always full loads intheround although I'm careful not to overload towels. The odd time I really need something washed and I won't have a full load it goes in the eco wash.
