How many loads of washing do you do a day?

I am a Mum of two young girls, with a husband who works away during the week and brings home minimal laundry but creates a bit when home! (Running gear etc).

He says I make my life harder than need be by doing too much laundry.

I wash beds once a week (unless girls wet the bed), towels about the same, or twice a week but bath mats and hand towels more...girls uniforms daily. I do, on average, 2 loads of laundry (big machine though) a day. Often more though if blankets or sofa covers need doing.

How much do you do? Trivial issue but bugging me as my husband constantly bangs on about it.

I do loads of laundry by the way but the house is in perpetual chaos and mess!!!

DS is still pre-school age though, he comes back from pre-school covered in muck from the garden/paint (at least they use washable paint)/lunch splatters. Everything has to be washed daily for him

I don't understand why everything has to be washed daily. Does he only have one outfit? Even if my boys have clean clothes every day, I still only do 1 load a week of their clothes.

bonkersLFDT20 · 05/02/2014 22:42

We are 2 adults - I run, DH cycles and gets grubby with his work. We do not wash everything after a single wear.

1 14 yo = school shirts, muddy kit, things going straight from clean pile to dirty laundry pile in the name of room tidying, chucking things in wash when only worn for a couple of hours.

1 4 yo = school uniform as and when, mud on everything

I think it probably averages out as 1 load a day.

We re-use towels a lot (hang out on line inbetween - they're fine).
Bed linen - whenever I see a good washing/drying opportunity!

NO idea how large my drum is!

MrsCakesPremonition · 05/02/2014 22:44

Imagine how much money, electricity and water we could save if the whole of MN committed to reducing their laundry by just 2 loads a week per household.

missismac · 05/02/2014 22:44

family of 6: 2 adults, 3 teens/young adults, 1 10 year old. Two girls, four boys.

I do one load a day - sometimes two on the weekend (large drum machine). OP your husband is right - you're just making unecessary work for yourself.

ephemeralfairy · 05/02/2014 22:54

Blimey and I though we overused the washing machine running it 3 times a week! Mind you, no DCs here. And I change bed sheets about once a month. Or less. Confused

doubleshotespresso · 05/02/2014 23:27

Minimum of 2 sometimes 3 loads a day.....

Wash towels and bath mats twice a week and bed linen once a week.....

There are daily sports kits too (usually caked in mud!)

This means I can keep on top of everything through the week and not spend all weekend ironing!

poocatcherchampion · 06/02/2014 06:37

I am always horrified by these threads. people are so wasteful! washing things after one use, creating a massive industry of cleaning clothes.

I have 2 under 2 one in cloth nappies, a dh who does sport and we do 3-4 a week tops. I'm trying to reduce it. there is no way I want to spend mg hard earned cash on water and electricity, and more to the point - I've got a lot more interesting things to do than play with clothes.Shock

TantrumsAndBalloons · 06/02/2014 06:46

1 load set to come on at 4am, taken out to dry when I get up
1 load set to wash at 3pm, taken out to dry by whoever gets home first
1 load on at 7pm.

That's mon-fri. Sat/sun prob another 2 per day.

Me, DH, dd(15) and 2 DSs who have football training every night between them.

iloveweetos · 06/02/2014 06:51

3 washes a week between me DH and dd. I thought we overused washing machine too!!
2+ washes a day? Ridiculous. How are u drying these clothes

Pumpkin567 · 06/02/2014 06:51

2 a day. Roughly breaks down like:
Bedding weekly ( 2 loads)
Towels (2 loads) white towels
Clothes ( 1 load a day)
Dog towel, running, gym clothes. (. 1 load)
Children's /my school coats,hats gloves etc. ( 1 load) filthy they get
Swimming stuff. Twice a week. (1 load)

When I lived alone I did three loads a week. As there are 4 of us it's about right I think.

MrsDavidBowie · 06/02/2014 06:53

At least 2-3 a day, and at the weekend sometimes 6 on Saturday.

RubyGoat · 06/02/2014 06:55

In winter or if it's raining, 1 load. If it's warm & breezy out, up to 3 loads a day in summer. We've no tumble drier, 2 airers & a Lakeland heated airer, plus radiator racks. And a damp house.

I need a washer/drier.

NightLark · 06/02/2014 07:02

Saturday to Friday I'd say it goes:
3/2/0/1/1/0/0
So that would average out at 1 a day. One of which is just swimming kit.

There are five of us.

I have no clue what you are all doing to get so dirty.

MigGril · 06/02/2014 07:04

I agree with some others on this thread, people are washing to much. I mean do you really wash coats every week! And towels after every use! Such a waste of water and detergent.

We average probably 1 load a day, but some days I have a day off so do 2 another day. this includes DH gym stuff which is twice a week and him swimming twice a week to. change sheets once a fortnight ish and towels when I think they need it.

MigGril · 06/02/2014 07:06

oh and there is 4 of us, one lot of school uniform for DD as she doesn't seem to be able to keepit clean and clean cloths for DS everyday as he's a toddler who gets very messy at preschool.

Hulababy · 06/02/2014 07:09

Me, dh and 11y dd

3-4 washes a week

I never understand these threads with some people washing so much. I simply wouldn't have time to wash, dry and iron so often. And it is such a waste of energy and resources to wash stuff after one use in the vast majority of cases. Even when dd was a baby I didn't

littlemissblue · 06/02/2014 07:32

We do about 6 loads a week, me, dh , 3 yr old DS but I'm due dd any day so it'll prob be more soon.

Bath towels once a week, bed linen once a week, dark and light loads as they pile up. Dh wears same work trousers 4 days a week and new shirts every other day. DS has clean clothes every day if his are visibly dirty or smell!

Just got a tumble dryer but going to try not to overuse it!

OneMoreThenNoMore · 06/02/2014 08:05

We average 1 load a day, but I often don't do any washing over the weekend so I'll do more on a Monday. There are four of us- Dh and 2 dcs (aged 2 and 3)

We have a new 12kg machine but I don't really have enough drying space yet so the machine isn't usually full. Most stuff is washed at 30 degrees.

Dh goes to the gym, runs and cycles; his kit gets stinky so needs washing after each use. The dcs are still young and messy so they often get through more than one outfit per day, and I end up covered in unidentified child-related substances so my stuff usually needs to go into the wash after one use too. Bedding is washed fortnightly, unless there's a reason to do it more often (ie vomit Envy); towels are washed when they start to smell Blush but I wash hand towels and tea towels more frequently.

ThePearShapedToad · 06/02/2014 08:11

Towels: after every use, but I have enough so I can wait 5 days for there to be enough to make a load

Bedding; once a week

Bathmats: once a fortnight / three weeks

Work cloths (so like a uniform)- skirts / trousers when they're grubby, certainly not everyday! Shirts get put in laundry basket each night until there's a full load (again I have enough of them to wait for this)

Other stuff as and when the basket is full

Maybe one load every other day?

Ragwort · 06/02/2014 08:26

I'm another one who can't believe people use clean towels every day - what a waste of time/energy and detergent. And a hassle to dry in this weather.

We are a family of three, probably have 4-5 loads a week.

I don't understand why everyone seems to need clean clothes everyday (socks/underwear excepted Grin) - unless you are really much children surely most things can be worn a few couple of days? I don't put on clean jeans ever day and no one has told me I smell Grin.

1 most days. About 5 loads of clothes a week (one delicates/wool), one of towels and one of bedding.

No need for clean towels daily and if we're going swimming I take the towels from the bathroom then they go in the wash afterwards: the only extra washing is the swimming costumes.

DH cycles to work up a muddy (at this time of year) track. He wears the same clothes for this all week. I try to only wash underwear/socks after each wear but as I'm at home with a very sticky toddler don't always manage it. DS gets a full set of clean clothes daily. Unless they are actually soiled or sopping wet I ignore minor stickiness and staining until bathtime.

WorrySighWorrySigh · 06/02/2014 08:41

We do 3 washes/day:

  • I have a clean towel every day ('tis my only real luxury)
  • Clean towels every couple of days for everyone else (everyone in my house showers every day)
  • Clean clothes every day for me & DH
  • Clean shirt every day for DCs
  • Clean bedding every 2 weeks

You do have to consider the multiplication effect of more children (we have three teenagers) and also their ages. We are a family of effectively 5 adults. Clothes, towels and bedding are all a lot bigger (and sweatier) than when DCs were small.

Any road up, I dont see why, as a resident of a cold wet island, I should worry about water consumption. Last time I l;ooked there was a lot of it about.

Cakebaker35 · 06/02/2014 08:47

I'm gobsmacked some people only use a towel once before washing it, wow.

AfricanExport · 06/02/2014 08:55

Wow. People do a lot of washing. . We do about 5 loads a week of clothing and that includes a load of muddy sports kit. 2 adults, 2 preteens.

Towels. Once a week.
Bed linen. When I remember

I remember when we had the twin tub delivered. .. exciting times Smile, before that it was the washboard. A friend of my mom's had an ancient machine with a mangle (is that right? ). That was in the 70's.
