So here it is the dreaded January thread. The thread of resolutions and good intentions for the year that you are lucky if you see through to the end. Welcome to the start of 2014!!

A quick note for newbies, this is a long running thread. We do like new blood around here. However, we do ask you to be respectful that for a lot of us just getting off our arses is not going to help and to avoid suggesting this. We all know life is more complicated then this. So here we do things a little differently. A little bit of flying and a lot of chatter and moral support. Feel free to jump on board and join us in flying.

For those who are new to fly lady she recommends a three step program:

  1. Get those babysteps into a habbit
  2. Get rid of the clutter.
  3. Get that deep cleaning done.
Don't worry if you think you not doing it right but not getting up to it. Some of us have been here for years and we are still decluttering. Because clutter has a nasty way of multiplying if you take you eye off it, especailly if you have kids.

Fly lady ethos tells us a few things that I want you to remember:
No perfectism this is harder then you would imagine
You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

So jump on board and lets get started.

Oh and I forgot the proper introductions. "I'm Bitchy and I shall be your guide to the fly lady system for January" better buckle up as things normally get a little crazy when it is my turn to take control. good luck Grin

My birthday started well with DH giving me a voucher for a local beauty salon Smile - although, sadly, not enough for Botox Wink.

The boys remembered to wish me a happy birthday when they woke up, although neither remembered to give me a card. DS1 had an awful night last night (OCD) and didn't want to go to school today, but went because DH reminded him that that was the best present he could give me. DH had to drive him there, mind you.

MIL is coming round in a minute and I should tidy the house, but CBA. She'll just have to put up with the mess! I have put one load of washing on, but the washing up isn't done yet. And the sitting room floor is covered with Lego again.

To do

Wash my hair
Meet friend for our joint birthday lunch

Should do some ironing and tidy up, but I'm not sure it's going to happen...

Aliama · 16/01/2014 10:40

Hi everybody. I've been a bit rubbish about posting, and have been doing the bare minimum flying-wise. Still recovering from last week. My Friday hospital appointment turned out to have been booked in the wrong name -- they gave me the confirmation letter at the desk, and I didn't notice because... well, why would you? Then, of course, the clinic was cancelled, but of course I didn't get the letter, so big old wasted journey.

I'm just settling back into my DD routine not that all the playgroups etc are restarting after Christmas. She'll be 3 in February, and has a significant speech delay (no expressive speech at all), along with some social issues. She's fine with me and others she knows well, but tends to blank everyone else.

Have FINALLY got a home visit with Portage sorted on Monday, which I have been waiting ages for (Spring last year). She currently has a speech therapist in place, although hasn't started proper sessions yet, has just been observed at her nursery sessions.

She has also been making me laugh copying me with the housework. Current faves are:

1.) unloading the cutlery section of the dishwasher (no matter whether it's dirty or clean). One item at a time, thrown at random into the drawer.
2.) 'Sweeping' the floor with the duster I was using to sweep toys out from underneath the sofa
3) Sorting the laundry, by taking clothes from the floor and putting them in the laundry basket.

The copying is a good sign, I think. She's coming on, but progress is slow and she still won't. Bloody. Speak.

[Just], I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. It sounds utterly exhausting, and thank goodness for that caretaker.

And ugh, on bad tempered DHs. Luckily mine is generally happy, but I do find myself getting frustrated by the feeling that I need to micromanage him, because he always forgets to do things. I'm the same in a lot of ways, but I've made a real effort to train myself to remember the important stuff and get it done. It's frustrating sometimes when it doesn't feel like he's making the same effort.

[Toffee], I'm so jealous. Really wish I could get back to studying something again, just for the fun of it. Might have a browse of the OU website later, but not sure I can justify the cost.

And happy birthday!

And sympathies to everyone with fussy eaters. DD is the same, although I can't shake the guilty feeling that it's my fault -- that I don't cook enough, don't present her with enough fruit, etc. etc. Have bought a book called Mange Tout from Amazon, and I've been waiting impatiently for it to arrive for the last couple of days. As if a book can solve the problem, when what I really need to do is get it together and start cooking for her properly.

[Ta da]

Living room tidy
Kitchen tidy and clean
Wiped down hob
Took out rubbish and recycling
Stripped bed
Washing on
Put away all clean laundry (about 3 loads worth Blush)
Dishwasher on

Not a bad start to the morning on the whole.

Just diving in to say "Arsebiscuits"!!! Grin, no, not really (although I quite like the sound of them Aliama Smile), really diving in to say ...

"Happy Birthday" to Toffee!!! Wine Thanks Hope you have/are having a lovely birthday lunch!! And I think you deserve a day off tidying on your birthday.

You are right Bitchy nagging never achieved nowt - so have reverted to task chart which dd quites like - and it certainly makes the whole process a lot quieter (if nothing else)

Sorry school situation still so demoralising Blue

Waves to Engels and everyone else!

Utterly miserable day here. It is so dark and gloomy in this house and not much achieved so far (that's my excuse anyway).

Just going to say "arsebiscuits" for its rallying effect Grin

"Arsebiscuits"!!!!!!!!!!

humanordancer · 16/01/2014 12:52

And Happy Birthday from me too Toffee

Hello all - I've not kept up very well with flying since I went away, or the thread. But I have sorted a lot of papers so everything is ready for doing the tax return, and I've been getting ready for and doing low carb bootcamp (which is working, dramatically).

I found it much easier to cross things off the to do list whilst darting around a small town than I seem to find it in London. So I suppose it was a bit of an anti-procrastination trip, really.

Today I'm at home and need to try to maintain the advantage of having done the flying last week and not get in a tip again. If I can fit some stuff in between work things that would be brilliant.

To do

A sort of slapdash bleurgh to keep me going till Monday
Swish and swipe
Washing x2
Ironing
Wash up
Sink
15 mins etc

NickNacks · 16/01/2014 13:01

Happy birthday toffee :)

BitchytheGreat · 16/01/2014 13:03

Just about done my morning routine.
House is a state in most places and I am catching up on Holby City.
Hoping to do some zone work later once I have collected the kids from school.

GoingGoingGoth · 16/01/2014 14:10

My vacuum cleaner bags have arrived! I am so Grin

Done
Bed
Dry laundry away
Laundry rebooted
Windows
Washing up
Boiled hand warmers
Knitted 'liner' for DD's hat, just need to attach it when she gets back from school

To do
Vacuum everywhere

SallyFinkelstein · 16/01/2014 14:36

sans Only had steam cleaner since Christmas so is still (almost) a fun toy. I expect it will be languishing in the under stairs cupboard before too long and then DH will get annoyed, even though I specifically said not to get it. [ungrateful]

Toffee Happy Birthday. Hope you've been doing fun things so far. I too am a little Envy of your OU course. My lottery win plan is to become a student for the rest of my life, so that's a nice realistic life plan.

Not really feeling it today, although I did surprise myself earlier. Put DS2 down for his morning nap and was all ready to go downstairs and slump on the sofa when I decided to strip the beds, put a wash on and do my exercise DVD. I am now thoroughly glued to the sofa with a Brew though, enjoying being lazy until he wakes up and we go get DS1.

Ta da
Up, dressed, packed lunch, school run etc
S&S x 2
Cleared table and washed up. Surfaces and sink wiped

Beds stripped (and cot now)
Washing on
Exercised
Out to return stuff and collect other stuff
Beds remade

To do
Attack mount doom of clean washing
Dinner
Wash up and wipe worktops and sink
Sweep floors (maybe mop)
Vacuum? Am quite liking the clean floors but think everyday is a little excessive!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/01/2014 16:04

Happy Birthday Toffee!

Sorry, not posted much this week, busy at work, busy at home. Posted my request for SA this morning and felt a bit wobbly about it, however am glad it's done. Have also spent a lot of time this week going through files, scanning stuff in etc. Going to phone a friend tomorrow who has been through all this with her DC and try and arrange to meet for coffee next week. Other than that tomorrow is earmarked as a day off from thinking about it too much.

Right, need to go and do a few other things. Back later.

Aliama · 16/01/2014 16:45

Sigh, dd is throwing a wobbler because I won't give her any cereal. She's had two (small) bananas already in the last ten minutes. Wondering if I should give her dinner early?

Happy Birthday Toffee - and well done ds1 for his present

done
an adventure! went to Newcastle/birthday partyfor a 36 hour overnighter
stayed night with friend
and it was a tonic

but I'm tired now, and home looks cosy Smile stayed in ginormous but slightly bursting at seams house, terraced/detached houses look small and dinky and easy to heat to deal with in comparison.

done
washed up the stuff in utility sink
washed ds1 blazer and shirt
talked to my children, although I have to say they all seemed VERY LOUD after short absence

rain seems to be pattering rather suspiciously in the chimney breasts..hope there is no leak

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/01/2014 21:02

Ta-da!

School/work
Finished tax return and filed paperwork
DCs fed and DD taken to Drama
Home and baked cakes with DS
Bit of paperwork and fed cats
1/2 hour OU work, am a bit behind, but I think 1/2 hour extra every night after tea should get me caught up.
Fetched DD from drama
Ate with DH
Supervised DCs baths/bedtime
Going to do a bit of crochet and watch TV now.

Swan your Flying visit (geddit?) sounded fun.

That Fussy Eating book arrived yesterday, had a quick scan through it and nodded my head, yes, I have lost my way somewhat. I have tried to stick to this path more or less in the past and failed dramatically, so, I have announced a new start from Sunday. DS sounds quite keen.

sanschocolat · 16/01/2014 21:18

Argh, everything going calmly/well tonight until I asked dd whether she had exam papers for us to sign (her form teacher had written a request in the hwk book asking us to do this saying that dd was late handing them back in). DD got hugely defensive, upset and started shouting (we'd already had the results before Christmas - some good, some bad - so that wasn't the issue) so we were a bit bewildered. We tried to explain (as calmly and patiently as possible) why it was helpful for us to read them (and why the school wants us to) so that we can help her in the best way possible etc etc but this just resulted in more explosions and upset leaving dh and I at rather a loss as to what to do for the best (again) [sigh]

Ooooh, is that Wine I spot in the naughty corner? Thanks Bitchy! Just what the doctor ordered! And where's the birthday girl then??? (Hope you have had a lovely day Toffee)

Swan great that you got away and had a good time!! Yay!

Whoknows congrats on your v. productive day!

Sally would you mind linking to your steam cleaner if you have a mo please? Am interested in them (not using chemicals etc)

ToffeeWhirl · 16/01/2014 23:16

Thanks for the birthday greetings, everyone. I have had a very happy day Smile. Went out for lunch with a friend, then for dinner with DH. And fitted in three hours of flying in between.

It's exhausting having fun, isn't it? (Or maybe it's my age? Shock)

JustGettingOnWithIt · 16/01/2014 23:27

Legs it in to say glad it's been a good one Toffee. Smile
