Ideas for shoes, boots, hats & gloves storage in a small house please.

Hi
We have a small hallway and over the past couple of years have used an ikea set of white drawers to hold footwear and the top drawer for hats, scarves, gloves etc. it is not ideal but has worked ok.
I have been sorting it out and noticed a horrible smell on all the hats, gloves etc.I think it must be from the drawers holding all the shoes & boots below that have grown to smell and the smell just wafts up to the top drawer.
I can't carry on with this smell but have no idea how else to store all these shoes & boots as we have so little storage space.
Also I'm thinking if all the footwear is giving off a smell I don't really want it in the hallway as it will be the first thing visitors smell!

Please could you tell me how you store all this stuff if you have a smallish house?

Do you have room for an Ikea Expedit? You could get the cheap £2.50 boxes to fit in and change the shoe one every few weeks when it gets smelly?

LaTrucha · 17/11/2013 07:52

Oh gosh! yes please me too. Allt he hallway furniture I've seen is too waide for our hallway.

RachelHRD · 17/11/2013 09:35

Sounds as if the shoes may be a bit damp and not airing properly as they are in a drawer.
We have a coat rack witg baskets above the hooks where I store all hats, gloves etc and then a narrow hall table for book bags etc which has a low shelf where the shoes that are in use live and then a shoe cabinet for those that aren't.

Jemster · 17/11/2013 09:57

Thanks Rachel I think you could be right. So would the answer be not to put them in anything contained? I was thinking of a shoe rack/bench but thought this would look a bit messy in the hallway. I'd rather not be able to see them but am now worried about the strong smell keeping them contained in a drawer or cupboard.
Anyone use a shoe rack type thing in hall? I wish I had utility room. I don't know what I'm going to do with welly boots!

We have a small bookshelf but most of the shoes fall off it onto the floor and the ridng boots don't fit and stink and I have no idea what the answer is for those of us in tiny flats/houses!

EagleRay · 17/11/2013 10:01

I've got an Expedit in my hallway for bags, scarves etc plus a shoe rack which is actually a vintage alpine sledge.

And when it snows, the shoes are temporarily rehomed and the sledge gets used!

EagleRay · 17/11/2013 10:02

Sorry for unhelpful post - DD only 10mo so we don't have the volume of shoes that bigger families have!

MissWimpyDimple · 17/11/2013 10:05

I have an expedit too.
I don't have boxes in all the shelves and put boots in them

Jemster · 17/11/2013 10:43

Sorry what is the expedit? Is it open to the air or closed up?

I built this shoe cubbyall by myself to store our shoes in. You could easily adapt it to hold little baskets to store gloves and hats as well. A bit less bulky than the expedit if your hallway is small.

fruitcorner · 17/11/2013 10:56

We have a hall bench from GLTC which fits in our very little narrow hallway , it has storage under lid and shelf under the bench bit for shoes. I have gloves and hats for 3 kids in string bag on their coat hooks behind front door .

NorthernLurker · 17/11/2013 10:57

Expedit is quite chunky. We have a flat-ish shoe cupboard from Ikea. Certainly never noticed it smelling but then things don't go in wet. We also have a shoe rack now and I've been surprised by how tidy that looks! ALso Ikea. They have a whole section on shoe storage. Get thee there and have a look. If your hall is wide enough expedit is brilliant though. You could wall mount it and put a shoe rack underneath it.

NorthernLurker · 17/11/2013 10:58

Our thing is a bit like stall here. Useful shelf on top for keys and hairbrushes...

iwouldgoouttonight · 17/11/2013 11:05

We have this from ikea (although I don't remember paying that much for it!). It holds eight pairs of adult shoes, or more children shoes and hardly sticks out from the wall because the shoes are stored vertically iyswim. It doesn't solve your problem of airing the shoes though.

We seem to have gloves, hats, etc all over the place at the minute so if anyone has good ideas for storing them...!

iwouldgoouttonight · 17/11/2013 11:07

NorthernLurker we have the same idea!

NoComet · 17/11/2013 11:07

hats, gloves etc. in baskets on a high self, not needed often as older DS keep day to day gloves in their coat pockets.

Shoes in a Ikea square chubby hole rake (like a school clockwork one) sadly not still sold.

walking boots, under and wellies in a custom built in open topped box built by DH, because hall kid so narrow nothing fitted (his size 11 wellies still don't)

NoComet · 17/11/2013 11:08

cloak room

YankNCock · 17/11/2013 11:22

I've got the complete Ikea catalogue solution to our hallway. We actually don't really have a hallway, it's just the wall of the dining room as you come in, plus the wall going up the stairs.

This on the wall for coats and bags.

These boxes on top for grownups' gloves, hats, sunglasses, etc

These hung low on the wall under the coat rack, two side by side, one on top, for grownup shoes, and then the kids tiny shoes sat on tops. Have left a reasonable gap underneath so extra shoes can be neatly tucked under.

This set of hanging pockets for DS's hats, gloves, etc, got it hooked around one of the spindles of the stair handrail, low down so he can get in it.

This set of folding hooks for DH's bicycle panniers, the changing bag, and the laptop bag, attached higher up the side of the stairs.

These hooks at intervals going up the side of the staircase, so I've got enough places for the kids I mind to hang their bags and coats.

It's sooooooooooo much better in here, everything is up off the floor and really organised!!

FunnyRunner · 17/11/2013 16:16

Yank any chance you could put a picture of your hall on your profile? Those are great links but can't visualise how you have arranged things Smile

goinggreyagain · 17/11/2013 16:21

If you have a closet that you can hang one of those over the door shoe holders they work great for hats and gloves.

Astr0naut · 17/11/2013 16:31

We a teeny tiny hall - two people can stand in it uncomfortably.

We have a coat hanger with about 5 hooks on it. I also have a dhoe rack nex to the radiator. This year's solution to hats etc, is to keep my gloves in my handbag and all else in a bag which is hung on a coat peg.

No idea where school bags will go next year -especially as Ds' room is pretty much the same size as the hallway.

SecretLimonadeDrinker · 18/11/2013 10:15

Great job overmydeadbody that's amazing!

I've actually be pondering winter accessories storage over the weekend. We have a closet under the stairs for coats and shoes but it's dark and it pongs (DH's trainers/football boots). I'm thinking of removing the hooks as I can't easily see what's on them and replacing them with a clothes rail and some hangers. Hooks on the back of the door for scarfs/bags/hats, I'm still thinking about glove storage. Going to buy a shoe rack and relegate DH's sports footwear to the garage. The walls are really grubby so may even give them a coat of paint too, thinking about it, may have some yellow paint leftover from DS's nursery and it's endurance paint too.

YankNCock · 18/11/2013 10:26

FunnyRunner I've posted pics on my profile. One of the folding hooks is actually up behind the coats.
