Ideas for shoes, boots, hats & gloves storage in a small house please.

We have a small hallway and over the past couple of years have used an ikea set of white drawers to hold footwear and the top drawer for hats, scarves, gloves etc. it is not ideal but has worked ok.
I have been sorting it out and noticed a horrible smell on all the hats, gloves etc.I think it must be from the drawers holding all the shoes & boots below that have grown to smell and the smell just wafts up to the top drawer.
I can't carry on with this smell but have no idea how else to store all these shoes & boots as we have so little storage space.
Also I'm thinking if all the footwear is giving off a smell I don't really want it in the hallway as it will be the first thing visitors smell!

Please could you tell me how you store all this stuff if you have a smallish house?

I've a chest of drawers that was supposed to go from bedroom, downstairs then to charity...it's got as far as downstairs lol footwear and all hats/gloves/scarves/etc now have a home there...

No problem FunnyRunner, as you can see, I rarely remove pictures, the 'puppy' is now 3 years old, and DS1 is in reception!

I found an Edwardian hall stand, about 2m high but only 24cm deep, room for six coats/jackets either side. We made shoe & boot storage under, where the umbrellas used to go, and added a rack vertically alongside for hats, sticks etc. This would be quite easy to copy, to own required size, and there's room on shelf under mirror for gloves.

overmydeadbody that's totally fab. I would love one of those. And love all of yank's solutions too. I really should do some of this - I have rows of hooks but I am now going to get a shelf fitted above this for medium term storage of hats and gloves and am seriously contemplating something built-in for the shoes. Looks amazing.

We have 8 hooks in our hallway for coats and scarves.

We keep two pairs of shoes each in the hallway.

The remainder of our shoes are stored in the bottom of our wardrobe. Out of season shoes are stored in the loft.
