Do you love your vacuum? Please tell me what it is...

I need a new vacuum but don't know where to start. Our house is a good size but tall and narrow, so lots and lots of stairs! I have a cleaner who says she'd prefer an upright but I've not had one before. What do you think of Dyson? We had one 15 years ago which broke really quickly but I've heard good things since.... Any recommendations welcome!

I have a harry so no help there... does your cleaner not have a preference if she's the one using it?

I've had a Dyson and found it something akin to 'The Emperor's New Clothes'. It was okay, but not worth the £200-odd we paid for it. I replaced it for a significantly less-expensive vac with much better suction; one that is much lighter, more manoeuvrable and can get into small spaces.

I have a Bissell Cleanview Compact and love it to bits! The only downside is that it's loud - but incredibly good at vacuuming whilst being light and easily portable :)

She'd like a Dyson as has one at home, but after our previous bad experience I'm not sure. Perhaps they've improved over the past 15 years? And even then there's so many to choose from. We don't have any pets but with 3 kids and carpets in most rooms it can get quite grubby. I don't want to waste money by getting the wrong one.

Molotov, that sounds good, thanks. I'm not worried about noise as mine are all past the baby stage so shouldn't be scared of it- DS was always so terrified I could only Hoover when he was out!

if you can afford it, nothing beats a Miele

The uprights are more complicated than the cylinders, and so more expensive.

I have a Numatic (same as a Henry but the slightly more industrial version). I like it because you can treat it badly and suck anything you like up and it just keeps on going. You need to buy the red carpet beater version for it too though here. It has a much longer cord than my old dyson, I can do my entire down stairs without having to unplug. And it was cheap.

I have a Nu Henry. I've tried everything else but I kill lesser machines.
He's wonderful but not for those who don't relish a workout while hoovering.

we have a Hetty,its great,and its pink!

NOt mad on Dysons,mil has one and there was one in the cottage we stayed in,felt like it didnt have very good suction copared to the henry/hetty.

I have a dyson - it's great. Not an upright but the other one (what are they called?!) sits on the stairs. We have a pretty big place and someone to do the hoovering so it gets used a lot Can't fault it

I have had a Dyson and a Bosch and I currently have a Henry. The Henry is my favourite so far, it has suction and as others have said seems indestructible.

I have a Sebo. Had it for 18 months, brilliant suction, its great. Had 2 dysons before this.

Thanks all-sorry, was out on school and dancing run. Do you think the cylinder ones are ok if there are lots of stairs? I would have thought they'd be better but my cleaner thinks otherwise!

IMO a cylinder is the obvious choice for stairs. As well as Miele, some of the Bosch are top scorer cylinders.

For dirty downstaiirs carpets, uprights are best as they beat out the dirt, fleas, grit, moth eggs, spiders and dried bogies.

there's a lot to be said for a downstairs upright (if carpeted) and an upstairs cylinder. You can use an upright on stairs, but you may have to turn off the beaters and the hose will not reach all the way so you have to work from top and bottom unless you have intermediate landings.

People rave about Sebos but we have one in my commercial premises and I am not impressed. It has a harder life than a domestic vac.

Miele Pets Hoover - love it! Have big hairy shedding yellow lab & it still copes. And their help line is fab just in case you need it :)

Have a Henry! It's better than my old dyson. My mum swears by a vac though for pet hair

Pigletjohn - I've been told that cylinders are better for carpets than uprights. Have I been misinformed?

Miele it vacuums anything that's not nailed to the floor it's fantastic

I wonder if they meant gentler? I'm sure uprights are more effective at getting the dirt out.

Carpetfitters tend to prefer cylinders on newly-laid carpet when it has not yet been trod.

Ok, so Currys has the Miele S700 cat and dog vacuum (not that we have either) for £164.99 down from £299.99. Sounds like a good deal. It's a cylinder one as uprights seem more expensive. Any thoughts? I'm put off of Henrys as they're so heavy and as it's not me who'll be using it the most I'd feel bad lumbering my lovely cleaner with it.
