Finally finished all the kitchen drawers today and and cleared the top of a few kitchen cupboards.

Am I the only one who is finding way more than 10 items to discard in just half an hour? Or is it an indication of the sheer amount of clutter that I have accumulated without really noticing it. Hmm

Well I've been utterly crap this week, been busy doing other stuff so no time to follow the plan, but I have tried to get rid of 10 things each day as(yes lunch I'm finding it very easy to pick 10 things that can go).

Should be back on track in a day or two, although the arrival of a new kitten tomorrow may prove too much of a distraction. To be fair, I have cleared a cupboard for her food, and planned how I'll tidy the futility room ( yes it's futility in our house too) to fit in her tray and cat litter.

MrsFrederickWentworth · 09/06/2013 23:35

I have had a hopeless week but this weekend I

  • have cleared out my handbag
  • have done most of the dire area of the desk in the hall and the other drawers are easier.
  • have passed on 30 flower pots to a neighbour who sells cuttings for charity
  • have sorted out 50 plastic carrier bags for use as either bin liners or to be given to charity shops for re use.
  • have handed over a birthday present
  • have put ready for a charity bazaar the decorations from the bathroom windowsill
  • made a 5 min start on the bathroom

You can see we are like an old lady's house.

So I feel I have made a start. Even 10 mins a day would help.

MrsFrederickWentworth · 09/06/2013 23:40

On bank notes if your bank won't accept them, send them to the bank of England. They ought to.

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 10/06/2013 12:32

I think I'm going to do an edumacational visit to the bank of england in the summer holidays. I quite fancy going in and demanding that they pay me £20 as the bearer of the note.... I hope the kids would enjoy it, too.

As for decluttering - exhausted today.... snooze then clearing...

badchat · 10/06/2013 22:21

Just checking in... just about sticking with the plan having 'done' DVDs yesterday (I only have two!) and my pile of stuff to file in lieu of office/workspace (don't have one) today.

Found out that a girl at work collects baby clothes and equipment for a project for refugee mothers so got to remember to take some bags of baby stuff into her before my last day at work this Thurs...

Well I'm not doing very well at actually throwing stuff out! Although definitely things are looking neater, and some clutter gone.

Supposed to be on kids books today, although really we don't have that many (enough to fill 3 squares of an IKEA Expedit) and I need variety in my bedtime reading material!

There are a couple though that both DP and I hate reading, that I shall be sending over to my niece and nephew to see if they enjoy them anymore, plus we have a nice kid-friendly neighbourhood cafe that has a play area with old toys and books so I think there are a couple of tatty ones that I will drop off there (although will DD notice they are 'ours' and rescue them back?!)

what I really need to do is to convince DP to join in - there are LOADS of his DVDs and books etc. lying around that I am desperate to cull and take to charity shop. I'm sure half of them he has no chance of reading/watching again. But he wouldn't be pushed into it; I shall have to think of some more covert way of influencing him...

MegaClutterSlut · 11/06/2013 14:53

Have stalled a bit Blush last week got rid of around 4 black bins worth of stuff to the charity shop. Over the weekend I started doing the back garden I can't frickin stand gardening which was fun

This week I hope to get rid of more clothes as we all have way to many

spiderbabymum · 11/06/2013 17:23

Bad chat I think u are doin brilliantly for sticking to the program . I'm all over the place but will get it together soon ....focused a bit on the main living room . And did the garden shed of all things ......nr 37 I think

Yes but I am feeling like I need several shove in attic for later boxes ....precious little compared to all the awful rubbish I have purged from the kitchen

I reckon if you can persuade your do to do a bit of readin on the whole declutter thing he will see the value in it ....even if its just to recog that some of his stuff could go into storage for example . In the attic in my place is one step closer to the DOOR ....ie going OUT of the house .

TONIGHT
Printed off the check list to stick on living room wall ..

If I tick it off it might help .

And going to declutter the mass of toys completely blocking under the stairs .....with the help of my 6 year old ........ He is great at chucking stuff ....

I've done the kids books fairly recently so shouldn't take too long

Dod you use the library badchat .
?
Life is too short to re read books you really don't enjoy .
I refuse to read certain books if they are just too awful ...

Late entrant here - still on the kitchen. It's going pretty well, though - one massive strong post bag filled. Have been doing pan/baking/gadget cupboards yesterday and today; had a break for tea and am looking at tin foil/cling film/sandwich wrap scmutter all over the floor.
Anyone know a good way to store it? I don't have the wall space for a dispenser and I don't like them.
This is the sort of thing I have in mind, but I've only ever seen them on American websites.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 11/06/2013 19:56

Maybe this would do.

amazingmumof6 · 11/06/2013 20:48

still hasn't had a chance to actually start, but today I reupholstered 4 chairs for the school where my DS4 goes to.
they are for the teachers' staff room and look lovely. I told them they deserve something cheerful to sit on coz they need all the help they can get to relax dealing with those monsters all day! Grin

will link photos when done.

I'll finish other 2 tomorrow and will make cushions from leftover fabric.

I ? my nailgun!

planning to clean fridge on Thursday, does that count as Day 1?
I certainly have at least 10 things (yuck!) to throw away!Grin

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 11/06/2013 22:43

You are aptly named, mum! Re-upholstering is yet another skill I've yet to master. I do occasionally make curtains, but it takes me several months to finish a pair. Four chairs in one day I find incredible!

amazingmumof6 · 12/06/2013 07:49

thanks - but I could only do it because my mum is staying with us, so I have unlimited childcare!

It is dead easy.
takes time, and you have to pull and fold fabric at corners well, but not complicated.
also I didn't bother taking the old cover off as it was only dirty not damaged.

my arm is aching though!

I really want to show off, but no idea how to link photos!
I mean I know how to transfer photos from Smartphone to PC, but then what?
see I'm not that clever!Wink

Yep, wow! to uphostering four chairs and what a lovely thing to do for teachers. Our dining room chairs, which are from my parents, and the same ones we used when I was little have been waiting for me to re-do their cushions since we took them nearly two years ago! It is just the cushion pads that need doing; amazing mum is it really as easy as just pulling new cover tight and nailing down? And could I use a hammer/nails with oilcloth do you think, or do you really need nailgun/staplegun?

spider - yep, we go to library every one to two weeks, mostly for kids, but I get the odd book too. I have severely reduced my books over the last few years. I would say I have maybe 2m of shelf space now, and they are definitely only books I use or want to read again/share with others. It is just DPs books I would like to get rid of Grin.

I don't like being coerced into doign household stuff though, so I am not going to push him - he does periodically go through clothes, books etc. and get rid of heaps of things, so not a hoarder.

amazingmumof6 · 12/06/2013 14:16

badchat it id quite easy, but I'm sure you can find tutorials on YouTube.

could do with hammer and nail, but a staple gun isvdo much faster and bloody good fun!

the sound is immensely satisfying! Grin

amazingmumof6 · 12/06/2013 14:17
