DH wants to explain to me how to hang the washing correctly!

DH tells me that when he comes home he is going to give a tutorial on putting washing on the line. He thinks he is being very helpful, I have been doing the job for 30 years so obviously I think I am managing OK. However he has now put doubt in my mind. What do you think is the CORRECT way?

Let him knock himself out. Tell him you need lots and lots of demonstrations. And there are other areas you need to brush up in and could he demonstrate some ironing, oven cleaning, window washing etc.

There is a correct way but I am too to explain it as it sounds mad!

Less ironing though... and I hang out in groups so easier getting in and putting away - you see it sounds bloody crazy!

The correct way is always however you do it.

DH took very early retirement and I'm still working part time so there has been a "period of adjustment". There has also been a reallocation of household chores. I have always seen to the washing because that's how it worked out over the years. Until he retired he only ever brought in the washing.

To my way of thinking he should have learned how washing is hung out from how it always is when he fetches it in.

However, now that he also hangs out the washing has come to the conclusion that have been doing it wrongly all my life. As did my mother before me and her mother before her.

This has led to some enraged temper tantrums from me marital disharmony.

Put your foot down very firmly now. The next step is advice on how to correctly iron shirts and blouses.

Agree, just sit back and enjoy the show .... Make sure you behave in an encouraging manner so as to promote his demonstration skills. Dont forget that It's not about who is right but who does the job.

At first reading I thought that sounded outrageous - then I remembered that I gave my husband a tutorial last year! A case of 'my way or the wrong way'

But he in terms of division of household labour it is nice when he hangs up washing as it is usually my job. So I try not to point it out!

Does he want to come here and show me how to do it?! I have a terrible memory so he would need to show me daily

Agree if he wants to show you then some sudden onset short term memory loss is in order - meaning that he will have to show you again, every day, for ever.

I tried to show my H how hang out laundry. It didn't take.

My dh does not do it right [angey]

My Dad once questioned the way my Mum hoovers. She quickly told him where he would find the hose and the nozzle if he didn't shut up.

She told him if he wanted to help, he was welcome to take over, but she would do things her way and he could do things his way.

No more issues after that!

But bottoms from the top?? Surely then the pegs are clipped where the waistband is, one of the slowest areas to dry..surely bottoms should be pegged from the bottom to leave the waist area flapping freely in the breeze???

I'm going to teach you a thing most men learn as boys (while girls are learning to do housework).

Being unable to do simple household chores means you don't have to bother trying ti learn, but can just leave them ti some other mug.

He's the mug here - he has admitted to knowing how to do something that you can't do after 30 years of practise.

So now it's his job.

What you say makes sense, but I've never had any problems with waistbands not drying. Also, I don't iron and I hate peg marks, so hanging things from the waistband minimises visible ones.

Ah. Point taken about the peg marks. I might vary my technique this weekend (if we see any sun) and re-evaluate.

Everything is hung from the waist here. Dungarees make me pause though!

When I told dh I wanted a cleaner, he told me he could get someone in for a few hours per week to TRAIN me to clean better!!!

I would take a looooong time to learn OP.

A couple of years ago, my DF started to tell my DM the best way to drain pasta. My DM, who has cooked the great majority of the meals eaten at home over the course of their fifty-year marriage, was remarkably forbearing. I think an ability to ignore "mansplaining" may be a good part of the secret of the longevity of their marriage.

Tops from the bottom, bottoms from the bottom. My DH has this 'bottoms from the top' thing which led to me having trousers with creased waistbands, bah. So much more going on at the waistband area - pockets, thicker fabric perhaps, or double-layered around zips/buttons.

GOD I need to get out of the house. Then get out a bit more after that.

DH rehangs most of my laundry, I let him entertain himself at it. Honestly, isn't there anything better he could do with his time?

(Oh, and his way of hanging out is WRONG!! It looks very neat but is lousy for getting things dry quickly )
