Fledglings Fly in Flaming June; C.H.A.O.S. will be banished soon!

sanguinechompa · 31/05/2012 08:27

Welcome to the June 2012 Fledgling Flyers thread. Park your mops, buckets and microfibre cloths here!!

A huge "thank you" to Toffee for leading us throughout May!! Hope you have a fabulous holiday in Spain!!

If you're house is a mess and you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine along the way.

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes, and as we are all at different stages we will be using one of the following methods:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

More info here, here and here

All welcome!!

Evening all. Have just read through the thread, but already forgotten who was what, sorry!

I've done no flying today because some work came in half an hour before the end of DS2's playgroup time, so all available time has been spent on that instead. :)

Very impressed with all the body clutter stuff. I need to lose at least 2 if not 3 stone and am still considering signing up to Slimming World. I have been vaguely trying to keep to a rule of "no snacks, sweets or seconds" (except sometimes on a special occasion) for ages, but not getting on very well with it. Now I'm not doing Zumba because of my foot I need some kind of kick up the bum to get on with something else... Trouble is, every time I don't have a biscuit, I feel like it ought to make me lose weight, rather than just not gain it!

Grr to the scissor elf, Bitchy and Grin at all the Wii stories.

Good night.

Honu · 18/06/2012 22:42

SC you mean they really come and take a whole room's worth of stuff away? Every year? . Here it costs 30 quid just for one sofa! How come the EU doesn't make something useful like that mandatory?

swanthingafteranother · 18/06/2012 23:06

likelucklove I sound like a serial dieter, but just wanted to say when I lost loads of weight walking ds1 around in a pram (I didn't drive at all in those days) when he was a baby, about 2 stone! So it works brilliantly, and I think I ate cake too so you can indulge when you are doing lots of strenous exercise

done
washed supper dishes
ironed remaining clothes which were nice and damp
another wash in
and Scout dropoff and pickup
and hung up all my clothes from today Shock
resisted eating anything more since 8pm except a single tangerine - no cravings at all, wow.

sanguinechompa · 19/06/2012 06:30

Hello, hello. Sorry to be posting baby-step only this morning. Fell asleep on sofa last night! Will catch up with thread later today. Hope you are all OK!

Today's baby-step, number nineteen, for Tuesday 19th is one to ignore (reading 'inspiring' testimonials). Just consolidate what we have been doing already.

We are in zone 4 this week - the master bedroom Try and declutter for 15 mins a day in the current zone.

If your kitchen is already decluttered, you can progress to detailed cleaning

Today's mission is tackling errant piles of clothes

The habit for June is drinking water

The daily focus for Tuesday is planning meals, activities, wardrobe, travel etc etc etc here

If I've missed anything, it will be in today's flight plan.

Kid's challenge still not updating Confused think it is a glitch.

Hope we can all Fly high today!

Just a list dump here- longest day at work so might not get a great deal done

Wash kitchen floor
Walk dog
Shred
Routines

That will probably have to do Blush BBL!

CarpeJugulum · 19/06/2012 09:56

Morning all!

Far more positive morning (if I exclude the council digging up the pavement and making a racket!)

Today, I got up, found the pack of socks that DS "gave" DH on Sunday still sitting under a cushion in the living room and queried DH on why they weren't away. "drawer's full" and it was, as was the drawer below. So I have cleared 3 of his drawers out, ditched all the old mishapen, mismatched, lone, and holey socks. I have then washed them all so they are clean and fresh.
He now has a dedicated tshirt drawer, sock drawer and a "warm" drawer with his thermals, thick socks and odd things like kilt socks.

Feel quite positive now!

So, my ta/to-do list is:
WAH job - done
Sock drawer clear - done
Lay socks away
Tidy dining room
Dust & Hoover dining room
tidy living room
Dust and Hoover living room
DS to baby gymnastics
Wii!!!!!

Oh! I had a revelation too! Pledge duster onna stick - brilliant for S&S living rooms etc - gets into the nooks and crannies without having to move everything! And once it's too dirty, ditch it and replace. Loving it for my weekly swipes (as opposed to the full clean once a month). Not the cheapest, but worth it!

[BODY CLUTTER diversion alert]

My Fitness Pal questions from a tech numpty, please be gentle:

  1. When I log in to MFP I can see tantalising first line extracts of "my friends' conversations" (that's all of you lot Smile) so um, where and how are you chatting please?
  1. I have logged food and exercise (not much of latter to report!) for Sun and Mon. Can you all see it? I would like it to be available for you lot to see, as a motivator ifyswim (so I can picture you all tutting and shaking your heads when I reach for the biscuit barrel Grin), but not available for the world in general (not that the world would be remotely interested but anyway)
  1. With regard to exercise, I haven't done my logged 'goal' exercises either on Sun or yesterday. But, for example, yesterday I did 10055 steps just in the normal course of things. Are you supposed to factor that in to your final calorie total, or do only formal 'goal' exercises count as proper "factors" ifyswim?
  1. How do you add a food to the diary that isn't already listed? For example, yesterday I ate some home made apple compote with cinnamon but couldn't find it listed, so have logged some branded version which I am assuming is more calorific than mine.
  1. Can I just say that all of you are extremely young and beautiful in your photos Grin

Ta very much in advance for help!!

OP posts:
MaggieMcVitie · 19/06/2012 11:15

Help!!
Have fallen off the flying wagon in a big way - house and body are cluttered!

I need to drag myself back on to both - will list ta da's later and am going to have a fresh start on MFP tomorrow. Will catch up on the thread in the mean time....

sanguinechompa · 19/06/2012 11:36

Carpe you are on a Flying high! Well done re: the sock fest!

Swan well done resisting those cravings! It really helps to know that people are in the same boat/fighting the same battles! And well done for persisting with your dd's room.

Honu/Swan yes all the stuff has gone! Hooray!! A humungous Fling Boogie. The Fat Fairy should be proud!!Grin However, you are both quite right to question the maths! There was some dispute as to the size of the annual allowance. (And thank you for explaining why this confusion has arisen Honu!! Dh will be very interested to read that!)

The exact wording is "Chaque ménage a droit à un enlèvement gratuit de 3m³ par an" which I took to mean 3 metres cubed. (Is that right?) They however said it meant 1m cubed x 3 Confused. (I'm not the best person to work out this sort of thing - useless at even the most basic maths Blush) Last year we were told the amount we put out was too small and not worth their while, this year we were apparently over the limit.

Fortunately, though, loads of people had taken stuff away in advance which reduced the pile. My friend walked past and commented later that it looked like a feeding frenzy and that I should have stood there with a collecting tin!! The men were also in a strop because we hadn't cleared/reserved them a parking place (absolutely no mention of that in the advance instructions) and they had to walk three feet across the road to stack their van. They were really quite belligerent until I distributed beer money, after which they couldn't have been more helpful! One even helped me brush the street. I still don't know if we will be getting a bill for the surplus though.

Having said all that, it is a good service here. We have different collection/depository areas for plastic, paper, glass, old batteries, old clothes, garden rubbish, wood, building rubbish, old cooking oil (not allowed to put down sink) and toxic materials or their containers. You can even go on free state-sponsored composting seminars/workshops lead by a "Maitre de Compost" Grin. Mind you ... taxes are high!

Great you are joining the Body Clutter challenge Honu. Arf at the trail of pedometers in your wake!

Lauren Good to hear you are sound again in the foot department! You did briliantly yesterday and that's a v. respectable list for today on top of a long day at work! Well done with the walking too.

Blue do you want to join us on MFP?

Likelucklove well done with the walking yesterday and well done with the mission. Hope you feel better soon too. Btw when you mentioned dip-dyeing hair, I thought you were going for a bit of a two-tone purple look like Jessie J! Grin

Well done to you too Bitchy you did loads yesterday. Also, I'm really impressed by the way you fit sewing in with all the normal housekeeping chores and keep it going as an on-going task ifyswim. I was determined to sew one day a week this year and so far have managed only one day a month if thatBlush.

Engelsmeijse you seem to really have the knack of using the MFP calorie tracker thing and using it do motivate etc. It's beginning to dawn on me how it all works!! Well done on losing 1.1 kg!!

Whoknows Beginning to think dd would love a Wii!! (Have resisted so far!) And thanks for MFP reminder!

toffee Smile at your ds1's campaign strategy! I'm impressed with how much you are getting done in addition to home edding.

OP posts:
laurenamium · 19/06/2012 12:36

sc you must have everything set as only you can see as I can't see anything only when you have/ haven't logged in and your weight loss! If you go to profile settings (under more if using the app) there is a "diary settings" and "friends settings" or similar. You need to have these set so only friends can see! As for conversations, I'm not sure where people are chatting as there aren't forums from the phone app which is what I use; maybe someone else might help?

laurenamium · 19/06/2012 12:40

creating your own recipe click add food, along the top click "recipe" and enter the ingredients and how many people it's for etc and it works out the calories!

BlueEyeshadow · 19/06/2012 12:56

SC - I think I might join you on MFP, yes. It's free, so why not?! If it works I'll have saved over Slimming World, and if I find it too much fuss, I'll try something else. Wink

Honu · 19/06/2012 13:37

SC my French is good enough to understand that perfectly - they are right, the 3m3 (how did you get the superscript?) means 3 cubic metres, not 3 metres cubed - ie it means 3 one-metre cubes worth. As I said, it's a stupid, but correct, system which causes untold confusion.

sanguinechompa · 19/06/2012 13:52

Thanks for the confirmation Honu!! Looks like we might be receiving a rather large bill for excess ...oh dear! Just as well we didn't put any more out - I was contemplating it at one point!

Great Blue have sent you a message on there (I think/I hope)

Thank you Lauren very much and sorry to be such a twonk about this. It will be very good for me to get to grips with the MFP - by helping generally with technology and dragging me in to 21st century. Again, I think/hope I have changed my profile settings and will have a go with recipe function when I log-in next.

OP posts:
sanguinechompa · 19/06/2012 13:59

Honu in that instance cut superscript by cutting and pasting.

One could transfer from Microsoft Word (under font, effects) then paste.

But I've actually jsutlooked at my keyboard properly and found superscript and subscript on very, very top left key of main body of keyboard ifyswim. (Under escape key). That will come in v. useful actually!

Let's have a go .... 3m³. Yay it works!

OP posts:
sanguinechompa · 19/06/2012 13:59

sorry - rushing

Meant to say Honu "in that instance, got superscript by cutting & pasting"

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/06/2012 14:30

I don't know if there are forums on the MFP website, but you can make comment on each others entries and see comments others left, that is what I meant by a bit of chat.

Just looked on the website, there is a community forum, but it would be open, like MN. Whereas on your own page you can restrict what is seen it to just your friends, like FB. I'm not likely to use the website much though, just my phone.

Honu - I agree totally about confusing terminology, being a scientist. One of my pet hates is things in the news which say x% of people do this and y% of people do that without making it clear whether y% is still a percentage of the same total as x, or a percentage of x itself.

foad · 19/06/2012 14:49

Hello Smile
Just off to pick up the littlies from school and will hopefully be back later to catch up and weigh in!
Flaps off

swanthingafteranother · 19/06/2012 16:08

my day has gone well so far. Dh is struggling to get ds2 to do handwriting practise.

Dh has been at home waiting for someone to set up his new computer, alas they have not arrived [Down with Currys!] Computer and assorted gadgets have arrived safely though yest, half the battle.

I've been to library work - that went well.

resisted snacks (just made some pancakes for children and only ate one absent mindedly but otherwise nothing) Healthy breakast, lunch, and a few cups of tea.

Walk to shops to get Dh some electronics

Now Ds1 and I are planning a short run, after I take dd to her piano lesson, and ds2 to haircut. Ds1 is still very overweight for a twelve year old - despite all the football and tennis, and it is getting worse (long saga), so I'm trying another attempt at getting him to run, as he wants to go to running club at school but I think he is going to be very very humiliated if he doesn't practise a bit round the local playground running track.

Turkey escalopes for supper.

Oh dear, ds2 is now crying over handwriting Confused

ToffeeWhirl · 19/06/2012 17:21

Grin at you absent-mindedly eating a pancake, Swan. Who was it who had the same experience with two glasses of wine the other night? Was it Carpe?

Have had a productive day, though felt a bit dejected at the battle over computers in my household. It seems that playing games online is all DS1 wants to do and now DS2 is joining forces with him, so life is a constant battle of distracting/timing/cajoling/protesting, etc. Even on a lovely sunny day like today, all either of them want to do is go online .

Ta da:

B/fasts and before-school routine
School run done - and on time
Practised 'descriptive praise' (from 'Easier, Calmer, Happier Parenting'), instead of the usual nagging, which made for a calmer morning
Also used descriptive praise on DH for remembering to take his used cups downstairs - this prompted a rather rude response Shock which made me Grin
Emptied bins
Stripped our bed
Washed our sheets, pillow cases, duvet cover
Put away a load of clean washing that I have been ignoring for a week
Unloaded tumbledrier and folded clean washing to put away
Hung bedclothes out to dry
Unloaded and reloaded d/w
Washed up extraneous crockery etc.
Wiped down kitchen surfaces
Swept kitchen floor
Swept hall stairs
Room rescue in sitting room
Reminded DS1 to do his online lessons
Walked in the sunshine with DS1
Lunch
Washed up lunch stuff
More online lessons for DS1
Spent an hour or more untangling all the electric leads hidden in a box under DH's side of the bed and putting each of them in plastic bags, ready for labelling
Considered phoning Wiccaweys, but am too scared - they haven't replied to my email and it's probably because they think I'm deranged to even consider a BC with my small house and garden
School run
Texted owner of magic dog, but no walk possible today Sad
Suggested picnic but DC not keen (I was quite relieved actually)
Watched 'Scooby Doo' with DS2, but fell asleep on sofa Blush
Made coffee
Put bed clothes in tumbledrier to finish off
Finally, allowed DC to go online
Just as I logged on, DH arrived home. It's bizarre how he always walks in the door the moment I log onto MN, thus confirming his suspicions that that is all I do all day Angry

One very positive thing - DS1 said he is no longer scared of going out locally, especially since the holiday in Spain. As he has spent the last six months terrified of stepping outside his front door, that was wonderful to hear. Today, it was him who suggested we go for a walk at lunchtime Smile.

To do now:

Make our bed
Sort dinner (was going to cook, but DH has come back with fresh plaice for the boys and said he'd cook it Smile)
Put clean washing away
Remember descriptive praise during bedtime routines
Wine

laurenamium · 19/06/2012 19:59

I still haven't washed my kitchen floor Blush it will be moving to tomorrows list!

Small ta da:
Walked dog twice
Played with DD and mindees and tidied up after
Routines
Mum came round after work to taste my banana loaf and see DD
Put away clothes in my room
Wash bedding

Still to do:
Shred
Print out tesco voucher order and get parcel ready to send
Put bedding in dryer

Well done for decluttering sock drawers carpe! And in the right zone for the week too Grin

Shock at having to have an exact amount of things for the men to collect sc! You should let them know that last years was smaller so you just made up for it this year Grin

Your evening sounds very healthy swan! Good luck with your run with DS!

I'm so glad DD isn't old enough for computers toffee! I remember the problems my dad had with my older step brother to try and get him out the house! He's an IT technician now and exactly the same as he was, he can vanish into his games room for hours and his girlfriend won't see him until the game/ project he's on is done!

kiwi5 · 19/06/2012 20:10

Hiya. Have been lurking and half heartedly flying in a definte haphazard lame duck kind of way. Just back from holiday and was so pleased to see my shiny sink that feel inspired to join in with the fun. Also super keen to shed some excess baggage! So rather than putting off flying til July am going to join in now and hopefully keep up with you all.
Off to do washing up, then clear the kitchen table, while keeping an eye on the footie!
