Carrots- I have loads of great ideas for learning times tables I can pm you stuff if you want. How does your DS learn best? does he learn best aurally - when he hears stuff- or with pictures/images, or is he a learning by tactile stuff kind of child? I have ideas for all sorts of learners.
Here's one for starters - tactile/visual
Lego tables
Get him to make a lego chart of the table he is learning ( From what you said I think you may have a small amount of lego in the house!)
Use the bumps on the lego as the number to be multiplied.
eg for 4 times table use the four-bump bricks
Get him to put one 4 brick
then below that 2 x 4 bricks together and so on!
Use a green base board to keep them from moving around.
Once he has done it up to 12 x 4, get him to recite table, pointing at appropriate set of bricks as he does it. When he can do this smoothly, get him to say it again, detaching the bricks from board as he says each sum. Then get him to put them back again as quickly as he can, saying each sum as he does so - the saying while he does it is really important. If he likes being timed you can time him while he does this!
Finally ask him to do it with "pretend" or "imaginary" bricks, so he just visualises them and makes movements as if placing bricks as he says the table. Sounds daft, but it can really work for visual learners
Three is easily made up of a two brick and one brick together. More fiddly to do, but that gives more time for learning!!!
I'm not sure about 5's - do you have any single row 5 bump lego, or do a 4 and 1 together?
9's are best learned using fingers like this
The lego is great for showing how, for example, 2x6=3x4 because the bricks will fit on top of each other ( have same area of 12 bumps!)
Have fun
Right, really need bath now!!
