Fledglings “March” 31 steps away from CHAOS and mess towards domestic success...

... well, a shiny sink at least!!

Welcome to the March 2012 Fledgling Flyers thread. Park your mops, buckets and microfibre cloths here!!

A huge "thank you" to Linzer for steering us all through February - not a small achievement Linzer considering your school run/teaching commitments and with your dh travelling so frequently.

If you're house is a mess and you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, whinging (in my case anyway Wink) and support along the way.

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes, and as we are all at different stages we will be using one of the following methods:

Here you can, for one month:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

More info here and here!

All long-standing members, intermittent returnees, lurkers and newcomers welcome!!

Quick update:

  • Baker Ross have delivered so tattoo stress is alleviated :)
  • Local Co-op are much more generous than local Tescos - they let me choose £20 worth of eggs
  • Reduced price Co-op chicken currently roasting so packed tea will involve chicken :)

Whoknows - I like your Ta da list this morning, think bunnies should feature more regularly :)

Need to find hoover now as disco preparation seems to be nearly sorted until I go back to school at 1.30.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/03/2012 11:15

Ta-da! List update

Morning routine finished
Washing on line, next lot in WM
Hall shelf unit decluttered, all gloves, hats etc in WM ready to be put away

I bought this yesterday hair accessories tin. DD's hair accessories have been the bane of my life hall storage wise, we each have a plastic basket on the hall shelves for our odds and ends, DD's is always overflowing with hair stuff (the baskets have holes in the sides so clips fall out, ends of the plastic alice bands poke out etc). Now it is all neatly contained, hoorah!

Off to fill a couple of bags with clothes for charity shop now.

Feet - phew!

swanthingafteranother · 30/03/2012 11:43

can't catch up, but
just wanted to say
Sad poor teeth SC dd had that last year 6 teeth out! She now talks rather fondly of her "operation" if that cheers you up Grin
SC glad house was so easy to sell! It must have been a lovely house, and difficult to part with consequently...but lots of extra work for you to sort that out despite your mum's efforts.

Whoknows Easter costumes sound even harder work than WorldBookDay - it must have made a lovely photo though!

Ellie I'm feeling a bit of a coward now! I wouldnever dare to say such things, but someone, preferably a real teacher, has to say them! Better not comment about our school in case of lurking.

busy day yesterday, combined with clearing out my Dad's flat, visit from dog (lovely dog SmileDh work probs, Ds1 concert, buying tickets for Dd's party with two kids in tow, World Book Day frenzy. And this morning internet goes wrong again.

Need to get out now and take wheelchair back to hire place, and dispose of various junk from Dad's flat... Mum has gone back to Eire where she is struggling with the steps/levels (although we WARNED her) hopefully she will accept some solution to her office setup.
I'm going out to Eire on Sunday, and dreading the scene quite frankly. Dad and my brother are literally hiding from my mum except at set times because she keeps shouting at them to do this and that...Sad

OMG, my brother has just rung to say he is expecting baby No2! Great news!
Mum is apparently not particularily cheered by this, as it means more trouble Hmm

BitchyInTheCorner · 30/03/2012 12:02

ds' folded clothes away
fold 3 baskets of clean clothes
remaining ds' clothes away

Set up ds' specimin tray for his rock collection

Right that is a pityfull amount of stuff done for a morning. I am going to go yell and kick people out of the lounge so that i can get stuff done.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/03/2012 12:23

Ta-da!

Two binliners filled with clothes to get rid of
My bedroom turned upside down in the processSad

I need some underbed storage boxes but nowhere to buy them in town nowadays (we lost our focus DIY last year), no Argos or anything here.

Swan - just wanted to say thank you for your kind pm earlier in the week, sorry I haven't had time to reply, I have been meaning to.

sanguinechompa · 30/03/2012 13:17

Hello, hello everyone. Bit chilly and overcast here again. Hope you are all OK. Can't believe it's nearly the end of the month!!

Dh returned late last night thank heavens, so I've ducked out of work an hour early because I am a bit cream-crackered today. Must be old age - not so tolerant to stress any more - don't know how dh does it day in, day out.

[mahoosive digression alert] Saw that wonderful programme about Salisbury choristers the other day - made me think about differing energy levels in individual dc and families. The choristers life is incredibly demanding - not all dc can withstand it. But - if you could tolerate it - it would definitely set you up for life in terms of resilience!

And then I went on to think about people I find particularly inspirational (one boss in particular I was thinking of and a close relation of mine who has four dc and two jobs) and what sets them apart from everyone else is their incredibly high energy levels and their ability to keep going enthusiastically, day in, day out, month after month, year after year, when everyone else is flagging.

And then I thought about how important it is to instill resilience and persistence in dc and came to the conclusion that I am failing badly in this as a role model atm Grin!!

Hey ho ... please excuse my musings ...it just always fascinate me when you meet new families and you gradually discover how they live their lives ..and the differing activity levels between them .....I think I have concluded we are at the low end of the energy spectrum Grin. Or mayble most of our energy is sublimated in to the business? Anyway, sorry, enough middle-aged ramblings ... how are you all getting on?

Swan Congratulations on your lovely news!!! It's always so wonderful to have a new baby in the family. Thanks - dd skipped happily off to school today so no harm done - glad to hear your dd hasn't been too traumatised by multiple extractions! Yes, house clearance will be a big job but there are lots of siblings to help fortunately. (House not particularly lovely btw - one they down-sized to - but location/school catchment area is what sold it so promptly). Good luck with "holiday" preparations/packing but doesn't sound as though it will be a very leisurely visit for you.

Whoknows Easter costumes sound lovely!! And snap! I was only muttering to dd this morning about her hairbands, clips and scrunchies being left all over the wretched house (and car)!! That's an excellent idea! I too am Confused over winter/summer attire ...dd skipped to school in short sleeves last week ... and wore her winter coat again this morning ...

New nickname came from the good dieting intentions I had earlier in the year btw (now blown to pieces - am the heaviest I have ever been atm Blush - got to do something about it as I cannot fit in to a good 3/4 of my wardrobe currently) So intend to inhabit my SC persona with a bit more commitment from Sunday onwards...Wink

Feetheart glad the tattoos appeared at the eleventh hour!! Hope disco goes with a bang (not literally!) They'll be Wine and large cushions waiting here for you for later ... Hope your dc are not too upset by all the leave-takings.

MummyNickleby top marks to you for hitting the gym regularly! That's no mean feat when you work such long hours. Beginning to realise it's as important (if not more important) to look after ourselves as it is to look after our houses. I think that's what Flying is all about really. Pretty obvious I know but it takes a while to "really get it" internally I think.
Poor you : re childhood orthodontistry - head brace sounds pretty full on - bet you have a lovely winning smile now though!!

Honu I wouldn't know where to start with juggling all your responsibilities. Each individual item on the list has the potential to be overwhelming in itself. Like Feetheart I stand in awe of how you are managing everything. Feel hesitant posting this because I am talking from a position of such complete ignorance and therefore talking through my hat as usual. I guess the only way is the Flylady way ie looking after yourself as much as possible FIRST so you can keep going. And being ruthlessly selfish (not at all selfish in reality of course) in prioritising the things you enjoy and delegating as much as possible. And although that sounds vaguely plausible written down, I can imagine it is nigh on impossible in rl. Sorry. (Written) words are farking inadequate. Hope you can resolve immediate brick crisis without too much hassle today.

Anotheronebitestheduster Hope you are enjoying your lunch!! Really like your new nickname!

Yours too Bitchy and good luck with that humungous list today!

Flaps wings frantically at everyone else ...

Tryingtogetairbourne · 30/03/2012 14:00

I'm back...thanks for all the welcomes and what to do with excess drawings by two aspiring artists.

We had a poo and sick crisis...just the dog. The evening of the day I posted I spent, cleaning up poo on living room carpet. Put stuff away. Came back to find a pile of sick. Move dog to dog playpen. Finish cleaning up sick, look up to see a new pile of sick. Clean up. Sit dog next to me, on lead, on bin bag to catch other bodily fluids. If I had put him in the (tiled) kitchen he would have barked and woken up girls.

Has been a cleaning nightmare but has convinced me to move dogs into kitchen to stop the peeing and crapping all over carpet (main culprit being the terrier little sod (love her really!)).

So feel ready to go again, but still have a pile of paper. Doesn't flylady have anti procrastination day?

Oh and got new huge dog bed (which terrier immediately sat in and refused to let our other dog in Hmm) to remove cluttereous blankets and mixture of beds. Now debating whether to throw them out and declutter or keep incase of sick dog emergency?...

Why did I get dogs? To get fit and lose weight. Its working so they are worth it I suppose Hmm.

Hope your all having a good day :)

BitchyInTheCorner · 30/03/2012 14:24

Anti-procrastination day is wednesday.

Monday: Home bluergh
Tuesday: Planning
Wednesday: Antiprocrastination
Thursday: Chore/errand day
Friday: Car and date night
Sat: Family fun day
Sun: Renew your spirit day

And in a very very scary way I actually can remember all that without having to look it up Blush

sanguinechompa · 30/03/2012 15:00

Ha Bitchy!! Grin

Methinks you are now a fully fledged gradute of the sect system Wink

I have just spent an hour with woolly brain trying to come to decision with builder about patio size/shape renovation. Aargh! There is no immediate solution, except that builder made me look a complete idiot by moving some pots around and instantly making existing patio look a 100 times more rational. We decided on an access path in the end to solve the problem of how to get out of the sitting room door without falling into a lilac bush Blush

children are watching telly despite it being a beautiful day, they have already had a major bustup on the way home Sad Not looking forward to more of this in the hols..

right better put my optimistic energetic tophat on Hmm rather than dithery Mrs Muddlehead bonnet.

swanthingafteranother · 30/03/2012 15:13

trying dog poo is bad enough in the park - the 6 month dog I look after chooses his moment right next to picnickers Blush So far he has not yet dared to do a mess in my house or his own! Hope he feels better soon, it must be an upset. Bet your kids love having the dogs too. Hope Dog House part of Mumsnet is regular reading, they are so helpful

BitchyInTheCorner · 30/03/2012 18:33

As we only have ten posts(well 9 now) left are we just defecting into April's thread a day early?

I fell asleep 3 hours of lovely lovely sleep. Ds has been unbelieveably good in that time. Ice cream for pudding as a treat I think.

Time to get ready for the late meeting though. Although still not sure i want to go. Will see what my mood is like when i need to leave. List for tomo consists of what hasn't been done today.

Sat:
Fold clothes
ds' clothes away
towels away
bedding and blankets away
Deal with paperwork in the lounge
wash table cloth?
hoover floor (although might delegate this)
Set up ds' specimin tray for his rock collection
get ds to make a carrot cake
more crocheting taking a break for half hour with this.
more laundry
find wood glue
keep looking for super glue
retry pizza for tea
Early night

And something fun with ds but that will depend on the weather a bit. PLus back is still a tad tender from gardening the other day.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/03/2012 18:48

Agree, it's time to move over.

Feeling very relaxed now after a hellish couple of hours after school. Both DCs had been given sweets by their teachers and I was not very popular saying they couldn't eat them till they had been to the dentist and whinged all the way home from school. DD stopped whinging pretty quickly and behaved impeccably at the dentist and at home again, DS just carried on and on and on. He behaved just about acceptably at the dentist, kept climbing all over the furniture in the waiting room but there was no one else there and he did take his shoes off. Whinged all the way home, so he was told he couldn't use the Ipad (his favourite pastime) which unleashed another hour of whinging. Behaviour was transformed after a plate of food, he has been a little angel for the last couple of hours. DCs and I have been playing Easter egg hunts in the garden with a set of plastic eggs that come out every year.

Flying wise, did quite a bit of tidying upstairs (we're still trying to re-home all the stuff that fell off DD's bedroom shelves last week), three loads of washing and that was about it for the afternoon.

SC - I can't remember if there are any links for Sundays, but I am away overnight Sat, would you be so kind as to post Sunday links for me on the new thread? If not, perhaps someone else could. I will have my phone and be able to make general posts, but links are very tricky on it.

sanguinechompa · 31/03/2012 07:38

Morning everyone

Sorry - I'm late with last baby-step ...out late last night.

Should I be posting it here or not if we are moving over? Not sure! Anyway, will put it here for now ... can always cut and paste it elsewhere later.

This is it fledglings, the last step of the month!
(sorry it's so late - I'm a bit slack today!)

Baby-step no.31 is here It's basically about having faith that the system works - you don't have to understand it all before you start - it will all become clear etc etc

No zones or missions because it is the weekend. Next week we will be starting again in Zone 1.

Saturday is family fun day! here

Hope you have a lovely weekend everyone!
