Welcome to the February edition of the Fledgling Flyers' thread.

If you're living in CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome), this is the thread for you! We follow the tips on the FlyLady website in an attempt to restore order to our homes, but advise against signing up for the e-mails; all the information you need is on this thread.

Each day, I'll be posting the links that will enable you to do any of the following:

  • start or repeat babysteps
  • repeat babysteps and do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

More information about the babysteps is here.

So please join us - there's always plenty of chat, Brew, cake, encouragement and the occasional Wine to help us on our way!

Is it normal to send kids home? I thought general policy was to lie to the school and keep them there Smile
No experience to go on, I have another 18 months until that joy Wink

Hope it's not a twisted testicle, that can be quite nasty. My DH had a problem with one of his when he was a kid, had to have an op as it hadnt dropped. It works though, well 1 did anyway Wink

RaisingEmbers · 07/02/2012 13:03

Ugh dd1 caught headlice 3 times last year from pre school, was never sure if I was supposed to inform the school or not, so I didn't, tut tut, just spent a small fortune on ineffective potions until I discovered the best way to get rid was comb, comb, comb. Time consuming but it works. We had letters home every term but I never heard of anyone being sent home because of them.

scattyspice · 07/02/2012 13:09

droit poor DS hope he's coping. My DD complains of a tummy ache at least 1x day (though unlikely to be the same trouble Wink).

linzer LOL at the child entertaining / burger eating tiler.

nick Shock at sending home for headlice!

toffee glad you're feeling the love at DS school.

Done (so far):
School run
post office
ASDA
pilates DVD
hoover
mop
reboot laundry

To do:
reboot laundry again
dust
bake cake
hem dds trousers
collect dd from school
collect ds from choir
DC reading/homework

Jnice · 07/02/2012 13:10

There are headlice letters it seems once a
Month at ODS's school. He has has them a few times and I just slather his head with conditioner and comb away for an hour. You have to do that every couple of days for 10 days to break the life cycle.

LinzerTorte · 07/02/2012 13:19

Here, if your child has headlice you have to keep them at home until they've been declared nit-free (with a doctor's certificate). It does seem to work though, as none of my three have ever had headlice.

Am now doing a jigsaw with DD2 and DS to keep them out of the tiler's way after he told me he was making slow progress. Blush Came upstairs to discover them showing him DD1's school report and discussing sheepdog trials. Hmm

Nicknacks a little boy in Beavers obviously had them, he was scratching his (long) beautifully shiny hair, and I was itching to mention it to his parents (sorry bad pun) but I thought to myself, surely I'm not allowed to say that anymore, so I didn't! I suppose it is good that they send the children home in a general sense, but not at all good for you. I know my dd has had nits and I would have been devastated if she had been singled out and sent home. In our case it was the other way round, I would mention to teacher in private and she would then make sure there was a general, undirected nit letter to whole class.

laurenamium · 07/02/2012 14:01

nicknacks I am also Shock at the school sending home for nits! A mindee had nits before Christmas and this prompted me to review policies etc but you'll know yourself being a CM that it's not inclusive practice to exclude A child for what is very much a social problem Sad is dc allowed back tomorrow once initial treatment has started? I love the doctors certificate linzer it's a fantastic idea if it is tackled like that nationwide!

dizzyday07 · 07/02/2012 14:47

I remember the first time DD caught nits. Her preschool called and told me to collect her. I didn't even know how to treat them! I am now paranoid about them and am forever checking her hair. At her current school, periodically the newsletter mentions that it's a problem and for everyone to check though she did come home the other day telling us that a boy in her class had them and was shaking his head over others - hers included. I found 3 that night in her hair Shock.

I started the day by going flying onto my hands and knees when I went out to defrost the car. We have only had heavy fog overnight which is what obviously froze on the path. It was so unexpected that I was a little shocked and have a delightful graze on my palm.

I have hoovered DS, DD and guest bedrooms and upstairs hall. I have also done ours and am contemplating trying to move our bed to do under it. It's a big leather sleigh bed so is quite a weight. I have also stripped DS and our beds and remade them. Old linen has been washed and hung to dry.

swanthingafteranother · 07/02/2012 15:14

Droitwich that sounds the most horrible day, but still better that they have finally found a problem. One of my cousins had a 12 year old son with a grumbling appendix who complained of tummy ache for nearly 2 months before they properly diagnosed him (gp kept saying it couldn't be app, as wrong side etc), full op etc. His mum was worried it was pyschosomatic and so did dr, as he cried wolf often before. My children intermittently used to complain of tummy aches; I never was quite sure what caused them until someone told me that children's glands are in their tummies so even without a stomach upset a "under the weather" virus can give you stomach ache, not to speak of nervous tension causing it.
Now the main complaint my 9 year old dd makes is usually that her legs hurt, so that is probably growing pains.

Anyway today both my poorly kids are driving me potty, completely whingy whiny, can't settle, demanding pizza, refusing pasta, coughing germs all over me but too bored to stay in bed any longer...won't read, won't play, won't listen to story. Ds2 has arranged my hair though Smile

done
seed order started in computer basket
chicken casserole/chicken soup
bolognese
cookies with dd
builder has fixed the new toilet seats
arranged for him to fix one set of cupboards this Sat morning

linzer My builder likes distractions! He gets bored and lonely working on his own all the time so loves to chat, sometimes it's good sometimes it is ...Hmm sometimes I just have to leave the house on a urgent errand....

BitchyKicksAss · 07/02/2012 15:17

Ouch DWM. I hope the antibiotics fix it for him and he is soon in less pain.

I haven't achieved much today. Ds was up every hour or two during the night and I am completely drained.

thewaffler · 07/02/2012 15:31

droit ouch, that sounds painful, dizzy watch yourself with the sleigh bed or you'll end up with more than a grazed palm......

So he's my first ever flying list, rather than unreadable big paragraphs

TA DA
S and s
Home bleugh which neglected to do yesterday
30 day shred dvd
Dark wash sorted from airer
White wash on and now on airer
Sticky stuff remover on suspected calpol stains on dd's carpet (ive been meaning to do this for months, took approximately 5 minutes!
A load of dark towels currently in WM (BlushI never ever wash towels so this is a monumental Ta DA)
2 shelves tackled in pantry
Ds taken swimming in pram, was planning on walking down to library after to return books, but he fell asleep within 2 minutes of being in pram, so made a swift detour back to ours, left him asleep in hallway while I got on with some of the above

TO DO
Iron lots
What's for dinner (i know what we're having which is another major achievement, but now needs to be executed)
Writing out some of the routines

Feeling quite pleased with myself, shall watch some crap catch up Tele now whilst feeding ds

Hope you're all having good Tuesdays

thewaffler · 07/02/2012 15:33

bitchy hope you have a better night tonight

MummyNickleby · 07/02/2012 15:38

droitwichmummy · 07/02/2012 19:14

Thank you everyone for your wishes for DS. Looking at him you would not think anything was wrong. Says he will be ok for school tomorrow. DH is home for the rest of the week so he will get a lift instead of walking - I will just send a note excusing him from PE.

waffler isn't it always those jobs you have been procrastinating about that take the least time to actually do?
Not much flying done today but I have made cake and ironed. Also put a load in the WM and a couple in the DW. Oh I have also connected the PS2 in the spare room so DS can play up there.

Bar is open - cake is in the tin

LadyInPink · 07/02/2012 19:22

poeia · 07/02/2012 20:20

Hi all,
Not managing to get on much and read the messages, been really busy last few days with various things.
thanks for the inspiration all, am on day 7 of BabySteps and keeping up with it all, which feels good. Anyone else just babystepping?

Just read about someone's dc being sent home from school with headlice - never heard of that before. I had the opposite recently: Dd had awful hand, foot and mouth - her mouth and tongue were covered in ulcers, she was irritable, wouldn't eat anything but yogurts etc...anyway, when I took her to nursery once she was better, they said "Oh, if she gets it again, just bring her in, is our policy!" I would feel awful if she had passed it on to anyone, and purposely cancelled play dates etc! Funny how a school can do the opposite with headlice!!

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 07/02/2012 20:30

They don't want them in at DD's preschool with nits either. Sensible in a way, although I understand some kids are very prone to nits.

I am feeling a bit meh and sorry for myself atm, but new dishwasher is coming tomorrow so, erm, Yay!? Confused Grin Hoping to pull myself together tomorrow and attempt a 'Home Blessing Hour' Hmm Grin

Until tomorrow......

MummyNickleby · 07/02/2012 20:34

Poeia, I'm just baby stepping too. I am trying to do a little extra each day (be it cleaning / tidying).
But my main plan is to keep up with the baby steps Grin

LinzerTorte · 07/02/2012 20:44

Evening all,

Just a short post as I've lost my longer one (clicked on the wrong button by mistake) and am exhausted so am going to have an early night. I did try Ctrl+V in case I'd copied it without realising, but all it produced was "improved washing performance". Hmm

Have been doing some paid work this evening; not the greatest time for it to arrive with the DC at home all day and DH away, but it's a new contact so I didn't want to turn it down.

Wednesday's links

Today's babystep is to start your control journal: find a folder and add pages to it for your morning and evening routines.

The mission is to use an old toothbrush to clean the kitchen sink taps.

Wednesday is anti-procrastination day. I really am going to make a start on my tax return and DD1's and DS's passport applications...

*

Off to bed now. It's hard work being at home all day while a workman entertains your children. Grin

NickNacks · 07/02/2012 21:09

Ds is (for now) nit free! He has gorgeous long long hair and so is bound to be more prone to getting them than others. We had a good hour this afternoon to go through with the nitty gritty whilst the babies napped. He'll be going back tomorrow.

I don't mind him coming home but dubious as to whether they send everyone home or just the ones who have mums at home (I'm still working though!!!)

Well morning routine done
mission done
Evening routine done!

That's about all i can manage at the moment but its keeping the house ticking along!

Tomorrows list

Book the restaurant for Friday
Book haircuts for Saturday (pending nits news!)
Visit HV clinic
Drop box off to charity shop
Mission
Bed

Droit I hope you're son is ok.

Lauren how is the childminding going? I see you're looking into getting accrediated, is that so you can accept the funded places? I looked into that also but the LA rate was so much lower than our market rate that i couldn't justify the drop especially when i could fill my spaces three times over.

Linzer Thanks once again for keeping the thread going!!

Sorry no time to giveany more personals as my eyes are getting heavy and i want to go to bed.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 07/02/2012 21:26

Evening all,

Feeling a bit sad tonight as DD (6) has suddenly said at bedtime that she is lonely at playtimes at school and her friends are playing with other people, she is quite shy about approaching people (although plays beautifully once they are together), so I think a word is needed with her teacher tomorrow. They have a buddy bench at school, she said she has been going to that and older children do come and talk to her but what she wants is her friends to invite her over to them I think. Off to read my book about how to make friends!

LadyinPink - I just wipe in between the magnets

DWM - glad DS is feeling more positive about his painful problem

NickNacks - sympathies re nits, we haven't had them for a while but they are always going round school, we just get a note saying check your child and treat them please, which I suspect a lot of people ignore, or just check by having a quick look.

Not much Flying here today, too much other stuff going on, but house looks fairly presentable after home blessing yesterday. Night all

swanthingafteranother · 07/02/2012 22:16

Scatty A cake, ha! I thought you didn't do cakes...fab!
we had the boiler problem last year at school, parents were spitting...it went on for ages
waffler ah, how sweet, tired baby in his pram after swimming Smile

done
had some cosy time with dts whilst ds1 rushed off to football, we all snuggled up in a makeshift camp on floor of dd's room
but this was the make up for the fact that we had an awful afternoon and dd had screamed at me nonstop earlier. Things were so bad that ds1 behaved beautifully when he realised her mood, and kept asking me if I was alright, and immediately did hs homework Sad By the time Dh arrived all was calm though. She keeps ringing him at work Shock She needs some friends round desperately!!!!

and Ds1 had a very good day at school, loves his Nurture group, and told me a funny joke about handing in his work to his history teacher Smile

Tomorrow DH is taking the day off, so we can breathe a bit. Hopefully kids will all go to school, please please please!!!
