Flinging our way through the chaos: February’s Fledgling Flyers

Welcome to the February edition of the Fledgling Flyers' thread.

If you're living in CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome), this is the thread for you! We follow the tips on the FlyLady website in an attempt to restore order to our homes, but advise against signing up for the e-mails; all the information you need is on this thread.

Each day, I'll be posting the links that will enable you to do any of the following:

  • start or repeat babysteps
  • repeat babysteps and do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

More information about the babysteps is here.

So please join us - there's always plenty of chat, Brew, cake, encouragement and the occasional Wine to help us on our way!

I'm shit at flyingGrin. None done. None going to be done. Cubs tonight, GCSE Options Evening tomorrow to ply my history wares at.

Big waves to everyone!

ToffeeWhirl · 06/02/2012 21:22

Ta da list:

Nap (four hours!) done (feeling a bit achey and had a rough night last night - not just laziness!)
Dinner done
Washing up done
Bedtime routines done
Wine done

Just off to watch 'Borgen' with DH. Totally hooked.

LinzerTorte · 06/02/2012 21:27

Tuesday's links

Today's babystep is another useful one: lay out your clothes the night before. I always get the DC to do so on school days; it saves so much time in the mornings when they're too tired to pick out what they want to wear (no school uniform here).

The mission is to scrub down the counter tops in the kitchen.

Tuesday?s daily focus is planning. I definitely need to plan a few things for the rest of the week if we want to avoid cabin fever.

Well I am getting a head start on you all and doing some serious planning tonight. means that i have failed at the try not to eat my own body weight in chocolate part of my to do list but hey ho.

to do list for tuesday:
ds to fracture clinic.
laundry mountain
my room to:
discover important paperwork needed for wednesday
make sure all clothes make it into wardrobe
Anything that need evicting is evicted
and if a small miracle happens it would be nice to discover the floor.
Also need to spend time with ds so he doesn't suffer cabin fever.
And need to rewrite cv.
Get ds' homework for this wk printed so i can send in to his teacher.
try to find out when i am supposed to be seeing teacher for parent's evening.

And try not to kill any occupants of the house something i pretty much failed at today as have been in vile mood, i suspect af might have a role in this

with that in mind and considering i have been up since 4am i am fucking off to bed. night all.

BlueEyeshadow · 06/02/2012 22:19

Night Bitchy!

We've just been watching Borgen too, Toffee - can only cope with one episode at a time though, so got the last one tomorrow. I do find Danish a funny language - sometimes it's very like German and other times it's all hurdy gurdy!

Chestnut - I've had to give up and use bleach to get rid of limescale - it's the only thing that works round here. I quite like a 15 min mad dusting dash though - see how much I can do before the timer goes off...

Linzer - The guy who tiled our kitchen called himself a tiler, so I guess it's ok! I'm glad the builders provided their own McDonaldses though. Just keeping them in tea is bad enough!

I've just done the counter tops so I'm ahead of the mission for once - yay! No flying tomorrow as we'll be out/working, but I need to get organised in a minute to try and avoid the usual mad dash in the morning.

libbyssister · 06/02/2012 22:22

Oh blimey, getting a bit behind as I haven't done the mission or the home blessing...
BUT I have spent an hour putting all of the zone info and detailed cleans as well as the daily wotsits into my iPhone app which will pay dividends I'm sure... honest... and it's not like it's anti procrastination day yet Wink

Have been reading thread every day too and it helps to focus the mind - thank you!

Right I'm off to disinfect my kitchen bin...

slowburner · 06/02/2012 22:24

Thank you for all your messages, it was frightening but not the first time so we are more confident in dealing with seizures now, I have also done a paediatric first aid course which has made me confident. Did it through the surestart centre and it was a good use of a few hours on maternity leave.

Today I had a Velcro toddler, would not be put down and would not go in the sling, add to that a 3 hour nap for both of us, and there was very litte flying here today. I did manage to get the kitchen sorted and one of the casseroles cooked. Somehow I managed to cook up a dairy free rice pudding for DD and a full roast chicken dinner (meant to have yesterday) and rice pudding for us. Tomorrow I am hoping to attack the bathrooms, take DD to the sensory room at the children's centre and take cake (which I need to bake) to a friend who has rather a lot on her plate!

swanthingafteranother · 06/02/2012 22:48

everyone's asleep, I fell asleep in dd's bed reading to her Blush
dh has tidied the kitchen, just to prove it does not need re-organisation Grin

not quite sure what is happening tomorrow, all the children have ferocious coughs.Dd wants to go to school. Ds2 can't and Ds1 should, but is v unperky

I've put another wash on, and that's it, I'm abandoning ship now so as to get a good night's sleep and read seed catalogues

nicknacks you will sleep the sleep of the just! Actually it sounds tiring but lovely too. When I was a bit older than dd I remember just spending all afternoon in my friends' houses - I want to try and encourage her to invite her friends over on a more casual basis after school now that she is a bit older: I think our house is missing the x -tra children factor and we are all getting a bit sick of each other's company. And dd has a lovely room so she needs more friends in it! Even the homework might be better shared between friends...

Lifebeginsatforty · 06/02/2012 23:08

Ellie if I was working at the moment (MFL teacher) I would be proud just to complete the daily routines and feed my family without resorting to ready meals every other day. I don't think I would ever get any detailed cleaning, missions or decluttering done. I'm not sure I'd even attempt to. But the days when you had to do evenings at school as well just used to finish me off for the rest of the week. Hope it goes well, and you get lots of takers (if you like big classes that is)!

thewaffler · 07/02/2012 02:04

Gah, just posted and lost whole bloody lot, can't be arsed to write it all out again, did go to sleep at the grand time of 8.20 last night, so not feeling too bad Smile

elliepac · 07/02/2012 06:53

Aah thanks lifebegins. That makes me feel a little betterSmile. Thing is we have had 3 weeks on the trot of after school stuff, yr 11 parents evening, yr 9 parents evening and now options evening. I am ready for half term! You are right about the class numbers. We normally do really well for numbers but that does mean big classes 32 in my Year 10 and mixed ability at that, everything from F to A* predicted. And 3 other similar groups. Geography got half the number we did but still have 3 groups with 25, 17 and 10Envy and they still moanGrin.

Anyway better get ready for my 12 hour daySad.

scattyspice · 07/02/2012 08:10

Morning Smile.

I will catch up with the thread later. Just a quick list before school run:

school run
post office
ASDA
hoover
mop
dust
laundry x2

Honu · 07/02/2012 08:38

Yesterday obviously was more stressful than I thought as I have overslept by 2 hours and, instead of dashing about and sorting things out I am faffing in my pjs on mn! Just for those who may be curious, rebooting the pc didn't cure the giant text but DH (who knows much more about these things than I do) said (in 'well, it's obvious' tones) that ctrl and + makes text bigger and ctrl and - makes it smaller. So this is this morning's pearl of wisdom and now I must go and move my lazy, cba body.

swanthingafteranother · 07/02/2012 09:32

honu that is a very useful pearl of wisdom Smile

Last night I went to bed muttering to Dh that I was going to get ds1 to school by hook or by crook and he muttered back You Organise It Then, So I Did. We went by car, and I had to take a very softly softly approach as he kept saying he was too ill to go (but clearly wasn't, just tired and didn't want to get up). The other two had to stay behind with Dh as they were coughing and spluttering revoltingly; round trip to school took me nearly 45 mins. Ds jumped out of car when he saw his school, I think he was fine just needed some kindly prodding to get out of house.

So, at least I'm dressed. Dh has gone to work at 8.50, very late for him so as not to leave kids in house. Although I suppose they are old enough now to be left for 30 mins at a time.

todo
piano practice/violin practice dd
baking with kids?
internet ordering - invites, food, greenhouse, seeds, compost
s & s loos in case builder fixes loo seats today
prepare supper, something with mince
veg boxes out done
sort recycling
friends round for coffee this afternoon?? check texts.

Ellie so far Ds1 hero worships his geography teacher ( He is SOO COOL Mum) his history teacher (we watched Gladiator Mum the bit where ....strangles ....) I don't know quite how this going to pan out in GSCE choices. He has turned against Science because she pronounces his name wrong.

laurenamium · 07/02/2012 10:12

Morning all! Just a list dump as expecting mindee soon!

To do:
S&s bathroom
I do today's mission every day a few times a day so I'm going to defrost and clean the freezer

Walk dog
Laundry- just the one Smile

LinzerTorte · 07/02/2012 10:31

Morning all,

Woke up to about 10-20 cm of snow this morning so I've been out shovelling it, which can be my exercise for the week. It took me 40 minutes as we've got a long path down to the road (but thankfully not too much pavement in front of the house) and none of the other neighbours seem to be around so I had to do it all by myself. The DC did come out and help, but after about 20 minutes they decided it was too cold and came back in.

Had a text from DH this morning to say that it's -27° in northern Sweden and they have 50 cm of snow, but I'm unsympathetic as I doubt he's had to shovel any of it.

The tiler is here again today (he'll probably be here until Thursday). but definitely no Burger King run for me this lunchtime as I don't want to dig out the car or risk driving. However, DS has already asked him if he'd like pizza for lunch Hmm and he would, so that's today's lunch sorted. I asked DH last night whether driving to BK was going above and beyond, but he thought not - and he's providing entertainment for the DC during half-term (particularly DS, who is fascinated by what he's up to), so that's definitely worth a few meals. droitwichmummy · 07/02/2012 11:03

Morning!

No flying at all yesterday - DS in severe pain on Sunday night from his bladder area and his testicles (he is 8). Took him to GP yesterday evening who prodded and sent us straight to the A&E dept of the second nearest hospital (nearest did not have paediatric urologist). Waited AGES. More (vigorous) prodding from a junior doctor from the department who then had to ask his boss. Verdict - its either a twisted testicle (ouch!) or an infection. So we got sent home with anti-biotics and painkillers and will get an appointment for a scan in about 4 weeks. Asked us TWICE why we had left it so longConfused He had been telling me he had tummy ache on and off for a couple of weeks but THAT'S WHAT KIDS WHO DON'T WANT TO GO TO BED OR TO SCHOOL DO!!! (shouting for the doctor who obviously does not have kidsAngry) I'm actually pleased I didn't take him immediately as he said they would have taken him to surgery to have a look!

Rant over. Must get something done today and make use of an unexpected day off
Lie in doneGrin
DW empty and reload
deep clean of sink
ironing (lots)
WM
bake cake
cooking - cottage pie x 2
hotspot - dining room table
put washing away
mission if I get time

Back later

justonemorethread · 07/02/2012 11:39

Hi all
Linzer I've been wondering about a change of career and I think I've definitely decided to come and be a tiler in Austria! Freshly cooked lunch every day? Yes please!
I could get the DCs trained up and all.

Anyway, back form doctors, DD1 has a chest infection - actually quite relieved to have antibiotics and hopefully her finally getting better.

Except she didn't want to take the antibiotics so I found myself blurting out
'If you take all your medicine for the whole week we'll take you to Harrods at the weekend and buy you a present'

WHY DID I SAY THAT?

So To Do:
damage limitation to avoid flat becoming pigsty.

Yesterday I actually spent some time (more than 2 minutes I'm afraid) on a hotspot in my hallway - top of a cupboard filled with all the predictable clutter.

Ok, it took 15 mins but I just couldn't leave it after 2 minutes. I AM a crap flyer!

RaisingEmbers · 07/02/2012 11:52

Morning all. Sittinghippo here, sorry to name change so soon after meeting you, but I've had that name for two years and it is decidedly crap!
Haven't don't a lot of flying, mainly due to working all weekend and as I said with the snow it was just horrendous. Thankfully its more or less melted away now, and wasn't working yesterday, so managed a few wash loads and a heap of ironing so at least I can try and catch up with myself now.
Am at work now, on my phone, so sorry for no personals, just wish everyone speedy recoveries from various ailments!

NickNacks · 07/02/2012 12:00

Argh DS has been sent home from school with sodding headlice!!!!

MummyNickleby · 07/02/2012 12:02

Morning, at work today so nothing achieved so far.
Slight name change in honour of Dickens' 200th birthday Smile

Waves to everyone from my desk.

I wish my laptop would work Angry grrr

libbyssister · 07/02/2012 12:11

Nicknacks - the school sent him home ?! Shock for headlice?!

LinzerTorte · 07/02/2012 12:22

MummyN Ah, I wondered what was going on - saw another Dickens name change earlier and wondered whether there was a particular reason!

Nick Oh no, what a pain. I'm dreading the day mine get headlice as it all seems to be such a hassle (getting a doctor' certificate before they can go back to school, etc.).

DWM Your poor DS, that must be incredibly painful. Hope it gets sorted soon.

justonemore Grin at bribing your DD with a trip to Harrods.

I must say that the tiler is doing a sterling job with the DC (who cares about the tiles? Grin). They're still up there with him now, and have been regaling him with tales of Morrisons ("in Wales, where Mummy's parents and brother live"), London and eating burgers in Chester. He's still insisting that they're no bother, although I do wonder if he's lying. I must see if we can employ him every school holiday.

Anyway, must go and provide him with post-lunch Kaffee und Kuchen. Fortunately I managed to find a small cake that I'd had free from the baker's in the freezer, as baking a cake especially for a workman would be taking it to extremes even in Austria, I think. Grin

OP posts:
Jnice · 07/02/2012 12:42

I'm proud to say I tackled the dining room hotspot - it took 20 not 2 minutes but I suppose my hotspots are bad as I'm just getting started.

Today is ODS's 9th birthday and DH is making him pancake for breaky.

My small list for later:

  1. laundry in / out
  2. dw load
  3. hotspot (coffee table!)
  4. pick up parcel from depot
  5. shine sink
  6. put clothed out for tomorrow

I'm really enjoying the feeling of getting on top of stuff. In the morning each day I started writing a list of goals for the day for everyone. At the end of a day it's a really good feeling to be able to wipe them away.

ToffeeWhirl · 07/02/2012 12:44

Dashing in briefly as I'm helping out at DS2's school all day today. DS2 is very happy about me being there and keeps running over to hug me. Another boy drew a picture of a castle for me. And another one put his hand on one of my boobs Confused. At least I'm popular Grin.

Just eaten lunch and now have to do a quick kitchen rescue before dashing back.

Nick - can't believe your DS was sent home for headlice Confused. I'll bet loads of children at the school have headlice. It's an ongoing issue at DS's school. Nobody makes a big fuss about it - we just get letters sent home reminding us to check regularly, etc.

Droit - sorry for your poor DS Sad.
