October's Fledgling Fliers: Seasons of Mists and Mellow Flyfulness

This is where from the 1st of the month, we attempt to declutter and follow the 30-step wisdom of Flylady (minus cutesy language and a surfeit of e-mails) with lots of chat and support and mutual motivation along the way. (More info available here )

Humungous thanks to our previous thread leader Blue for navigating us all through the August school holidays...and for doing it so consistently and well!!

As usual we will be following a three-pronged approach - and don't worry - we are all at different stages. Some of us (SC stares at feet) -are even embarrassingly stuck at decluttering stage after two years

  • repeat or start baby steps (again!)
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

Ugh! Ds1 is being impossible. He's wide awake & v miserable about it, but won't tell us if there's actually anything wrong. Just crying, thrashing & howling...

Only discovered this morning that tomorrow's school photo day, too. Cue lots of frantic ironing. Now, just hope he won't be too tired to cooperate!

Aagh!! Scuse the whinge.

coostoonettle · 12/10/2011 23:10

just wrote a ginormous post with loads of personals and ive lost the whole blardy lot. Angry

not much flying here, just school hassles. Dh did pick up and was called into school and told ds is fiddling with himself and making himself aroused when getting changed at gym time. Teacher suggested we take ds to doctors. Obviously had chats about appropriate behaviour but really the doctors??

imsorry but it now way to late to try and catch up again.

be back tomorrow.

Toffeefudgecake · 13/10/2011 00:06

Just checking in before bedtime.

Coostoonettle - can't believe the teacher suggested you take DS to the doctor Shock. My DS (5) has spent most of the last year holding onto his willie and could not be distracted from it. He seems to have forgotten all about it recently.

(Am assuming your DS is in primary school, not secondary, Coos Wink)

Nicknacks - I'm so sorry to hear about DD's hearing issues. It's always such a shock to find out that your perfect child has anything 'wrong'. Good to hear that WhoKnows has heard such a positive story about a child recovering hearing. Your DD is so young still - plenty of time for her to heal, hopefully.

Blue - hope your son settled down in the end. Any chance he could have an ear infection? That is very painful when you lie down.

WhoKnows - congrats on the successful soup!

Linzer - hope you are sleeping peacefully.

Madwoman - good luck at your interview.

Darkness - busy life much more interesting than FLYing. Good for you.

Off to bed now. Too late again. Night all.

madwomanintheattic · 13/10/2011 00:23

nick nacks - dd2 failed 9 hearing tests, but was eventually discharged from audiology at about 18 mos Smile don't give up yet!

interview went really well (i think) - the interviewer was twenty minutes late, so my five weren't apparent Blush and he offered to check and see if they had any higher paying jobs going that i might be interested in as well as consider me for this one. Grin he overshared a bit (confessed to not being sure oif he would stay in the job past this season, depending on what offer they made him etc Shock) but i think that was due to me being 20 years older than the rest of the applicants, and he thought he was meeting for a pint in the pub, or something. it was certainly the most relaxed interview i've had in a while! anyhoo, a week or so before i find out. (it's a seasonal ski hiil job which i think is hilarious - i would get complulsory ski breaks every day!)

blue - agree with the ear infection suggestion. ds was a nightmare and would squall endlessly at night, and would be right as rain during the day...

BlueEyeshadow · 13/10/2011 09:50

Thanks Toffee and Madwoman. Will get him checked out if it keeps on. I think he just wanted to be asleep and was getting so wound up that he couldn't settle, IYSWIM. Unfortunately, DS2 then woke up at about midnight and it took TWO HOURS to get him back to sleep again too!! Shock Confused

That made everyone oversleep this morning, so we were then running about madly to get to school early for the photo - they do the ones with younger siblings before school. We made it on time, but DS2 was terrified, screaming, burying his face in my shoulder and refusing to look at the camera. Was both Blush about the fuss and [anger] about the wasted effort.

Glad the interview was relaxed madwoman!

Nettle - Shock at the teacher - surely that's just what little boys do?! DS2 discovered his willy the other day when we were naming body parts in the bath - "tummy", "hair", "nose" - and he grabbed it saying "DS2's tail: waggle, waggle, waggle"...

NickNacks - Sorry to hear that, hope the HV can help.

Linzer - hope the work goes well and glad your DH was OK about the test result.

Hmm, better write a list:
Sort out laundry
Hoover, sweep and mop
Tidy desk
Mission - wipe down appliances
2nd attempt at buying tiles
Aldi shop and put away

substantiallycompromised · 13/10/2011 09:50

Good morning -

[Looks around] I can't be the first poster on here today can I? It's 10.30 am here and I thought I was running late.

Nicknacks Sorry to hear about your little girl's hearing problem. That must have been hard for you to hear, particularly you when you were expecting an improvement. Glad to hear the positive stories from others on here.

Madwoman Well done re: interview. I hope one of the higher paid roles will be offered to you!

Cnettle that seems like a massive over-reaction. My nephew appears in every family photo taken during his 4th year, holding on to his todger! He didn't seem to be able to let go!

Blue hope your ds1 had a better night

Whoknows we all have CBA days from time to time and looks like you did more than you imagined yesterday. Thanks for chimney sweep reminder!

[Carries platter of warm croissants through to Darkness in naughty corner, with a mug of coffee and a copy of The Scientist]

arf at waggle!

elliepac · 13/10/2011 10:10

I am posting this at 6am, no matter what silly mn says. It is definitely not 10.03 and I definitely did not forget.

The babystep for today is to do a mission, therefore your mission for today is also your babystep. Simples Grin.

I would do a round-up for yesterday but I couldn't understand half of what you lot were talking about with all your literary expertise and I have an A Level in English Literature. Grin.

nettie Shock at suggestion of doctors. Ridiculous. DS permanently has his hand down his pants. as does dh. We have had to have a chat recently about this.

nicknacks sorry to hear about your DD but good to hear a positive story from whoknows. FIngers crossed it will clear up as the doctor suggested.

madwoman congratulations on the interview.

Better go and do my job!

Back later

OP posts:
feetheart · 13/10/2011 11:40

[hgrin] at Nettie's DS's tail
Bonkers suggestion from teacher. My DS is 5 and frequently has his hands down his trousers and don't get me started on what he does with his willy when he's naked (as he often is) - makes me wince [hshock]

Not much done yet today and now off to Lidl as apparently they have running stuff there this week.
Will come back later.

DarknessSoothes · 13/10/2011 11:50

Thanks SC.
Welcome Ellie. Don't worry I spent a whole month recently leading from the naughty corner. No one remembers it.

Right i suppose i should be bothered to move and get some essential stuff. Got flattened by a migraine last night. Its not quite shifted but i think a couple of paracetamol and i might be able to function.

Bank
washing
pack for ds to go away
pack for me to go away
ds training

That is all I aim to get done. cba with the rest.

LinzerTorte · 13/10/2011 12:55

nettle I'm another one who's Shock at the teacher's suggestion - I agree with everyone else that it seems to be a perfectly normal stage for five year old boys. I had to have a "not appropriate in public" talk with DS not long ago (can't remember where we were, possibly a shop) and I suspect he also does the same things as your DS, feetheart - I even caught him demonstrating it to his best friend not long ago! (His best friend wasn't interested, thank goodness.)

Darkness Sorry to hear about the migraine; hope the paracetamol do the trick.

ellie Thanks for the links, I was waiting hours for them. Wink (Actually, this is about the first chance I've had to get on MN properly all day.)

SC Envy of your weather; it's another cold and rainy day here. Am even more impressed by your washing - you do a special DH socks wash?! Grin (Don't tell me it's actually divided into navy socks wash, black socks wash, etc. Wink)

Blue Sorry to hear about your disturbed night and school photo experience; sounds like a very stressful start to the day. (Probably a bit late now, but maybe a Brew would help?)

Had a lovely morning with a friend, drinking too much coffee and eating too many biscuits, but stayed too long and am behind with work as a result. I should really have rearranged, but we hadn't seen each other for months and I didn't want to reschedule at the last minute - particularly as I'm going to be busy with work and then away in London until November.

Heard on the radio this morning that 30% of women (Austrian women, I assume) lay their husband's clothes out for them in the morning. Surely they should be getting them ready the night before? Wink

swanriver · 13/10/2011 13:33

not much time, flying in and out...been helping in Library and now off to piano...
just to say to Nicknacks hugs to baby, and you, such a worry.
Blue hope dss both feel better soon. How Angry over photo stress.
nettie however, she could have a point that it might be a mild skin irritation - needing dr? Could it be the embarassment of having this convo with your dh and it came across wrong? otherwise, it is a common problem [sigh] in this household....Appropriate and inappropriate behaviour, one of life's great lessons [triple sigh]

LadyInPink · 13/10/2011 15:22

hi all Smile

Was on a school trip today with a Reception class so not much FLYing done today. Day off yesterday with DH was lovely and it was well needed. Even had a little nap too before school pick up while he mowed the lawn Blush

Done
Been to fabric store and gone through fabric's for our lounge/diner but the girl was off sick who can let us use her discount so a bit of a wasted trip.
Cleaned out kitchen bin
Done a load of washing which is now dry thanks to the gloriously sunny day
Washed up from breakfast
Visited a friend with new baby quickly to drop off a pressie (bought too small an outfit so had to exchange - forget how quick they grow in the first few weeks and was way out on size apparently.

To do
Pick up DD
Attend school meeting
Ironing of dry washing
Cook dinner
Homework with DD

Had a quick read above only so sorry about no personals

TTFN

BlueEyeshadow · 13/10/2011 15:48

Not much flying done, but I've set up a blog...!

LinzerTorte · 13/10/2011 16:06

How exciting Blue! Are we allowed to read it? Grin

BlueEyeshadow · 13/10/2011 16:29

Yes, of course, Linzer :) A Discount Ticket to Everywhere

madwomanintheattic · 13/10/2011 17:19

arf at austrian women getting it all wrong, linzer. Grin

dd2 was our 'not appropriate in public' child. it was endless. Blush we used to tell ds1 to leave it alone or it would turn blue and fall off. in hindsight that may not have been a great idea. Blush

flying then:

wm done
dw
bank
sort website contract
reply to painter's quote
sports store for warm leggings and outdoor trainers
scrub dog bowls (swish and swipe is not effective here, apparently)
mop kitchen floor
take two more bags of stuff to thrift shop Grin

dh is def planning to resign. he has totally lost trust in the ceo and spent last night looking for other options. just when i thought we were all settled!

Toffeefudgecake · 13/10/2011 17:29

Not much Flying done today as DH and I made the most of another child-free day and went to Ikea to buy a new dining-room table and chairs. I did have grand ideas about a lovely French farmhouse table, but had to accept that it just isn't practical (and wouldn't fit) in our tiny room, so we have bought an almost identical table, but this time it expands to fit eight.

Linzer - Grin at the Austrian women laying out their DH's clothes - of course, it should be the night before! Your morning with a friend sounds lovely and infinitely more fun than Flying.

It's very entertaining to hear about all of you with little boys who can't keep their hands out of their trousers. Perfectly normal in this household, at any rate. The only time my DS2 had a skin infection it was very obvious as he was in a lot of pain and cried when he did a wee, poor love. Quite different from his happy self when he is holds onto himself at other times.

Madwoman - glad interview went well. Hope you hear back soon.

SC - ooh, I love butternut squash soup. Save some for me, will you?

Lady - glad you had such a nice day with your DH yesterday. And a rare nap, too. Good for you!

Feet - hope you find your running stuff in Lidl.

DarknessSoothes - cross fingers that your migraine goes away soon Sad. Horrible for you.

Ellie - how is your tooth now?

Blue - Sorry you had such a difficult night and stressful morning. Hope tonight is better. How exciting that you have a blog! Will pop over and have a read...

DH is cooking again tonight. He made a chicken risotto last night that was absolutely delicious - perhaps particularly because I didn't have to make it!

Hope you all have a good evening.

NickNacks · 13/10/2011 19:27

Thank you all so much for your positive messages. I really hope, and at the moment I do think, it really will all be ok.

Lady So jealous of your lovely day with your DH and even more so of your afternoon nap.

Blue Just had a gander at your blog. It's lovely, I love children's books and reading to children. DS1 is a real bookworm and I really think it's because we read sooo much.

Darkness Hope the migraine shifted in the end.

Had a busy day with the little ones today- toddler group, lunch, naps, school runs, park, dinner, and home time and I'm pooped!

Anyway, got my babysteps done (DW, WM, tidy up etc). Am about to clear out the pots, pans, tupperware cupboard which I've been meaning to do for a few days now.

Tomorrows list.

School run
Mindees to CM friend'shouse for morning and lunch.
fridays wash
empty DW
Beavers run
Order boys bikes
post mum/dads card
return library books
toys to charity shop

That's all- be back later before bed to give me someone to answer to with regard to srting out the kitchen cupboard.

:)

elliepac · 13/10/2011 20:16

Evening all!

ANother ridiculously busy day although I have managed to do a little flying but only because the cleaner is coming tomorrow GrinWink. Am currently sat overseeing DS and his 'Learning Log' project which has to be in tomorrow and is as much fun as taking your teeth and pulling them out one by one Grin.

Am going to do round-up now if no-one minds as have still got to get tea. Although I appreciate the fact that I am doing a round-up at all is a miracle this week Blush.

nicknack is feeling more positive about DD Smile. She has also been wrestling with tupperware and is coming back to answer to us. Wink.

toffee has mainly been in ikea with dining table envy. She has also had child free time, elliepac envy Envy.

madwoman is feeling a little unsettled but has been decluttering in style. Well Done!

lady has been having a snooze while DH works. I like her style Grin

blue has been blogging, looks lovely btw!

swan flew in and flew out on her way to the Library. We wave back Smile

linzer was entertaining us with the fact that AUstrian women lay out their husband's clothes for them in the morning. So much wrong with that we didn't know where to begin Grin

darkness had a migraine Sad. SHe also made me feel better about my lack of leadership qualities Wink.

sc was enjoying a beautiful autumn day and being way too organised about washingGrin.

Big waves to everyone else. Hope you have all had a good day.

OP posts:
elliepac · 13/10/2011 20:18

Oh and I forgot to mention the discussion of the day was on the incessant need for our ds's to put their hands where they shouldn't. Bit different from yesterday's literary debate Grin

OP posts:
elliepac · 13/10/2011 20:19

Tomorrow's babystep is some light reading.

The mission will appear here

Have a good day everyone!

Wine Biscuit pomBear for all

NickNacks · 13/10/2011 21:14

Couldn't be arsed bothered to sort the under sink cupboard so off to bed instead.

Many thanks for the round up and linkies ellie

DarknessSoothes · 13/10/2011 21:42

Thanks for the round up Ellie

Did training for ds and bank. Migraine mostly gone and hitting with the super strong stuff tonight so will be walking dead tomo I expect.

I should be cross that ds is still up (house rule is that after 9pm I become very horrid, mean and shouty) especially as he refused to leave training tonight. However, as the child who doesn't make friends easily, and doesn't really do social skills was having too much fun playing with his friends I am more Grin then Angry but also a bit [exasperated] as he refused to go training initially tonight and I am tired and want my bed. Kids really don't make life easy for us do they.

Fri's list:
Pack ds' stuff for going away
Sort out training stuff.
Laundry x 1 load.
ring blackpool
blackpool run if needed fri, otherwise sat
drop ds off for contact visit
training
SLEEP before 2am Sat.
