Do curtains ACTUALLY hold in warmth if you have double glazing?

We're renting a house that has no curtains in the lounge. It overlooks the garden so no privacy issue. There is one 3'x5' UPVC double glazed window, and double glazed patio doors.

We didn't live here last winter, so don't know how the house 'behaves' in the winter (probably a 1980s house - detached).

Anyway, is it worth getting curtains? Will it REALLY make any temperature difference?

Ooh yes, curtains make a big difference for us.

we have blinds and putting them down as darkness falls really helps.

Don't make any difference Ime. We had fairly new french doors in our lounge and we rarely draw the curtains and never noticed any difference when we do.

I was just trying to Google it. It would seem that insulated curtains would help, but normal curtains might not make much difference.

Insulated curtains would probably be an investment I'm not up for making in a rented house.

If you make/buy some fleece lined curtains you can always take them with you.

With our DCs blackout blinds (roller and roman) we did exactly that. It worked well as this house has smaller bedroom windows. That meant we cut them down to size and they still do the trick.

I was looking at these IKEA curtains and thought they might do the trick.

Thing is, they look good value but with a curtain pole and fixing thrown in, it'd be close to £100 which is loads of money to us ATM.

(Because we'd need to do both windows)

Curtains with thermal linings like this will help even more. (You can buy them ready made too)

You could add your own lining of fleece between the fabric & lining on some normal curtains.

We have double glazed windows in our 10-year old house. When we got our survey before we purchased about a year ago, the survey stated that our double glazed wondows offered 'little thermal value'. So, I do guess that there is a huge quality issue. Last winter we only had net curtains up as we were renovating and new curtains would have got filthy. We taped up the gaps in the windows though. It is a bay window in quite a small room but via the kids room thermometers the temp variance from the wall to the bay window was about 6 degrees. Around 16oc at the far wall and 10-11oc in the aby window section. We've decided to get shutters on this window now so are wondering how warm this will keep the room.

We've just got cheapie curtains but IME they do make a difference - when I open them on a morning I can feel the difference in temperature, although our double glazing is really old and inefficient

They do keep the heat in. And draughts out. Even with double glazing. Well worth it, I would say,

OOh thanks everyone - I like the the ones at Wilkos. We have one in the next town, so much less on petrol than IKEA. I prefer the look of a room with curtains, and from everyone's responses I think I will go for it. Thank-you.

Dunelm is good for curtains and linings.

You can be lucky in charity shops too, but you have to be dedicated.

Yes, we got our thermal linings in Dunelm. Dead cheap and have made a massive difference. Sitting room (one wall virtually all glass) used to be bastard freezing in winter, is now vastly better.

I forgot about Dunelm which is ridiculous as that's where the DC's blinds came from.

I have a day earmarked to look at curtains with my Mum. I shall check out Wilkos and Dunelm (as they are local).
