Calling all hoarders out there......why?

muriel76 · 10/08/2011 17:10

My DH is a bit of a hoarder. Some of his family are the same but particularly his mum, she seems to keep everything. They both like to also display pointless things ie books that will never be/never have been read etc.

Don't get me wrong, it is not a big deal or anything but I do want to understand why. It's hard to understand as my mum is the complete opposite and I am the same. DH and I have agreed to give the house (another!) big clear out and it would help me to hear a hoarder's view!

(Obviously I have talked with him about it many times BTW, I am just looking for other people's more neutral insights)

Thanks for any replies.

our kitchen looks really clean again today - seriously, all we did was fasten the worktop down and put sealant in the gap (and perhaps move some bits off the other counter)
and it looks brand new!

ah, yes, definitely just fold up and put away the washing - much easier to iron it when you need it - saves that big ironing pile I remember from childhood! Grin

LoveBeing same here...2 bedrooms, no storage space and two Dc's...recipe for disaster when you are a hoarder!!!

Do you think we could be accused of hoarding our dcs? Grin

Babieseverywhere · 06/09/2011 17:03

nickelbabe, You have a good DH there, chucking stuff for you :)

Solo, I think sorting out your mum's paperwork counts as decluttering after all it is sorting out things, isn't it ?

DH and I have cleared and moved the last bookcase in the kids new room and DH moved the running machine to the landing on a temp basis.
We also emptied the upstairs landing by bring down ALL the craft stuff into the dining room, for me to sort out. Gulp, not looking forward to doing that job.

Today our DS went to nursery for the first time and he loved it and didn't miss us at all, I missed him through, it was very quiet with just the little one at home :)

Anyway have to get off, have tea and then off to aeorbics class at 7pm.

Babieseverywhere · 06/09/2011 17:08

"Do you think we could be accused of hoarding our dcs? "

LOL, We have 2 adults, three children and five cats in a three bedroom house, but I am not getting rid of any !

Solo · 06/09/2011 17:25

GrinOh yes!!! definitely a hoarder of little ones!!! I had to read my post about 5 times before it sunk in Grin
Ds went back today (year 9) and Dd starts in reception on Thursday for the morning! and although I really don't want her to even start school, I could really do with having her out of my way for the whole week day.

Babieseverywhere · 07/09/2011 21:37

Sigh, spent hours going through craft boxes, chucked three massive bin bags but there is still way too much too fit in wardrobe. I'll try another attempt at it tomorrow.

Solo · 08/09/2011 00:24

Babies, don't chuck out your crafting stuff, send it to the local school.

PricklyThistle · 08/09/2011 00:37

Haven't read the thread, but it reminded me of the cole scuttle story. My parents moved from NE scotland to Central Scotland to NE Scotland to English Midlands to N Scotland...7 houses in total and took a coal scuttle each move, despite having no coal fire in any house. My dad's motto - it'll come in handy some day. They finally moved to a house with a coal fire. My dad proudly filled his cuttle saying 'I told you so', lifted it and the bottom fell out, having rusted through. Having said this I too am a hoarder!

Poshbaggirl · 08/09/2011 06:22

That is classic prickly!!

Solo · 08/09/2011 09:59

That actually made me laugh out loud Prickly!!! That's the sort of thing I'd doo Grin

Solo · 08/09/2011 10:01

Doo, doo, do! Hmm

bessie26 · 08/09/2011 10:12

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I think guilt is what makes MW keep alot of stuff. For example, I have a little veg plot in the garden & every Xmas/birthday someone will buy me a really nice gardening book, which I look at once & put on the shelf with all the others. When I try to charity shop them I feel guilty giving away a gift (& of course I "might" look at them one day)

So far I've found the best thing to do is put them in a box & hide them away for a year or so, then it seems easier to get rid of them. But i really need a quicker solution!

I've also started mentioning to my parents & ILs (the people who buy us most of this stuff) that we have no space for any more books or in fact anything in the hope that they will stop adding to our clutter.

Solo · 08/09/2011 10:29

I can't give away gifts either...

nickelbabe · 08/09/2011 15:04

Grin prickly - that's brilliant Grin
(but also pretty frustrating for your dad!)

nickelbabe · 08/09/2011 15:06

bessie - don't panic, books have a get-out clause on account of them being books (and you can't get rid of books)

but you're right, it's so hard to give away gifts. even those you don't use, because it's almost like an insult to the person who gave it to you.

villanova · 08/09/2011 15:35

Wow, after 5 days I've finally reached the bottom of the thread - well done to all of you who've made a huge start on de-cluttering - it really motivates me to dive in and begin, too - I've been procrastinating for ages, because both DH and I are 'keepers'. I'd say we're not true hoarders because we don't collect ornaments or tat, 'just' useful things, as he likes to make stuff out of wood, and uses little yoghurt pots to mix up his paint, etc, we seem to have several windowsills full of 'stuff we'll need', which is fine, except the condensation has turned to mould, and is really a health hazard.
However going through the early part of the thread has given me some insight into why we're like we are, and making me grateful we're not worse - although both my parents were adults during the war, dad was a 'saver' like me, and mum is ruthless - she sold my bike while I was at college one day, and when dad died, threw out everthing of his before I had a chance to keep a single memento. I dread to think how much useful stuff she ditched when she moved house recently, but what's gone is gone...
DH was dreadfully poor as a child, and is attached to objects. He calls the house his 'shell' and, as it was his for ~10 years before I moved in, a lot of the stuff is his, so difficult for me to sort & bin, but more easy for me to be ruthless about!

We too have to do smething serious soon, as I'm pg with DC 3 and we live in a 3-bed house. DC2 (2yrs) is still in with us as there's no room in her brother's room until I have a big sort out and move around (but where to find the time?). There are bookshelves everywhere and the 3rd bedroom is fulll of games, boxes of stuff we want to keep, etc. but I'm going to have to be more ruthless.

Please keep us updated everyone on your progress, as each person's efforts keeps the others motivated, I'm sure.

bessie26 · 08/09/2011 15:58

nickle I love books & would dearly like to keep every single one of them, but we don't have the space & since having the DC I rarely get chance to read anything anyway. I could put them in the loft, but I know they wouldn't come down again until
a/ we win the lottery & can afford the extension/mansion or
b/ the DC have left home

Solo · 08/09/2011 15:59

Yes, I think we will villanova :) perhaps you can join us?! :)

I was 8 months pg when I was up in my loft sorting out!!! it was really hard as it is quite low...must've looked really funny Grin

Solo · 08/09/2011 16:03

Bessie I put a lot of my books into boxes and lofted them when I was pg. I worry about them all the time in case they are getting damp and suffering the same fate that one of my Mum's very old and favourite books suffered :(

nickelbabe · 08/09/2011 16:34

you always have the space for books.
believe me, i am an expert on this area!
look around your house, do you have a gap above your doors? put a shelf up there.
do you have space above the stairwell? shelves there too.
alcoves, walls, everywhere is space for books - and move furniture around, too - we have some bookcases lined up behind our settee (it splits the room in tow) and the bookcases are wide enough to put paperbacks back-to-bak.

nickelbabe · 08/09/2011 16:34

oh, yes, never put your books anywhere where the temperature fluctuated so much! Shock
they will be irreparably damaged - if you must, wrap them in cloths, and then plastic bubble wrap.

Poshbaggirl · 08/09/2011 21:44

I did a sitting room detox today, havent hoovered bits of it for months. All clean and lovely now. Any thoughts on videos? We have a video player and all the disney films etc, no point chucking them is there? But could i get other home video transferred to digital?
Car boot on Sunday! GrinGrinGrin

Poshbaggirl · 08/09/2011 21:47

And initial enquiries about the ring are that some 1920's 'saphires' are fake! Hmm i hope the antique dealer who sold it to XH is still there....see wot he says. Hoping to get 2 months rent for it!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 08/09/2011 22:02

Wow, everyone is doing so well!

Babieseverywhere · 08/09/2011 22:55

PricklyThistle, Your post made me laugh a lot :)

Welcome to the thread Bessie26 & villanova

Poshbaggirl, DH says goggle "VHS to DVD transfers" in your local area to get your videos put on discs.

I have slowed down to a crawl. I am waiting on the new wardrobe which is going to be next week now, this is holding up moving craft and bathroom stuff.

Meaning the dining room and bathroom are messy. I can't get rid of the books as my car has broke, so they are still in the hall. But my parents are going to help me get them to a book shop next week.

I want to scream, it looks worse than last week but I know it will be much better when finished

Having trouble with the running machine (currently on top landing), we can't get it down stairs as the side arms are stuck. Also the aerobics ladies are going to do an 8 mile run next year and I am meant to join them . So I am thinking of moving it into our room and use it to get fitter ! I walk about 1.3 miles a day on the school run and do two aerobics classes a week but need to do more exercise.
