A warm welcome to the June Fledgling Flyers' thread.

If the state of your house is getting you down, this is the thread where we follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style Wink) with lots of chat and support along the way and where lace-up shoes are definitely optional.

A huge thank you to Linzer for keeping us all on track so splendidly during May and thank you to DroitwichMummy for the thread title.

As usual, we will be following the Flylady three-pronged approach:

  1. Baby-steps (a daily step to establish routines)
  2. Then baby-steps + 15 mins daily decluttering
  3. (And once decluttered) babysteps + daily missions

If you are feeling overwhelmed by clutter and mess, you can make a difference, one step at a time.

For more information, have a look here. You don't need to sign up to Flylady e-mails (we advise you not to do so in fact - you will be overwhelmed - all the information you need can be gleaned from this thread).

All long-standing members, intermittent returnees, lurkers and newcomers welcome!!

Thank you Linzer very kind of you to say so!! This holiday, DD had two days where we played with her and two days when we didn't - so not too bad I suppose - and of course the big advantage to having one dc is that when one's other half is looking after them, you are totally free to rest/get things done/do what you want which musn't be the case with two or three. So I shouldn't complain really.

I've got to get back on track with the housework this week too. Whether one child or more, can totally agree that it's not really possible to relax and focus on them when everywhere is a mess!! Got to somehow fit serious decluttering (office/basement) in to my routines.

How frustrating re: Windows. Hope you manage to circumvent the problem some how.

I take it you are not going to be eating a bean-sprout salad for lunch??! Smile

Sending courage and caffeine to Ellie Have a good day!!

Right, off to count paper-clips:

morning routine inc dw on, wm emptied and on again, boudoir swipe done, bathroom swipe

After work:
45 mins of decluttering
home bleurrgh (tidy and clean sitting room, clean kitchen, sort fridges, clean kitchen floor, hoover ground floor, clean cloakroom, mop hall floor)
Afternoon routine

Waves to everyone!

Grin Linzer

I hate to think what constitutes "having a good time" in Flylady land ...

...opening a new packet of tan tights???

Making a new video of herself polishing her bathroom tiles??

Morning Smile.

I am struggling to work up the enthusiasm for work today too ellie.

To do
work/school
house bleugh

LinzerTorte · 06/06/2011 08:22

What I'd like to know is how she gets through so many candles (seeing as they're on her shopping list every week).

I can just imagine that buying a new pair of tan tights (the only colour you can wear with lace-up shoes, really) is quite a treat for her. Grin

Having Office in German isn't really a problem; it's just that I don't really know my way round Word 2010 yet and so it would be useful - but not essential - to have it in English. I've installed English screen tips (that appear when you hover over a menu or button, for example) as a kind of halfway house, which is better than nothing. It can also occasionally be quite handy to have Office in German on one computer (my netbook) and in English on another (main computer) if I need to translate menu paths, etc.

No bean sprouts here - DH even had to ask me what they were yesterday and whether we were supposed to be avoiding Brussel sprouts (not difficult!).

LinzerTorte · 06/06/2011 08:24

Oh, and FlyLady must have finished admiring herself in her new tan tights as the missions etc. have finally been updated. Grin

Stillchuckingit · 06/06/2011 09:01

OK

As Linzer has kindly pointed out, the Fat Fairy has finally stirred ...

and today's mission has appeared ...

So for anyone who is Confused please see

here!!

I am sure you were all waiting with baited breath Wink

Waves to Scatty [hands over strong coffee] and Linzer (glad computer probs sorted, I'm still trying to acquaint myself with Word 2007!!)

As you were everyone...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/06/2011 09:06

Linzer sympathy re Word, I am a long term user of Windows 2003, I am now having to work with Word for Mac at home and Word 2010 at work, both totally different and am really struggling, especially at work because I am updating a load of documents written about 10 years ago and the formatting is a nightmare. At least mine are all in English though.... flylady website seems to do this occasionally, forgetting to update, it did it a few times when I was posting links too, maybe it is some sort of holiday there?

I can imagine Flylady treating herself to a few pairs of tan tights and then finding she has to throw them all away when the declutter your sock drawer mission comes round. I also imagine her house is very twee. with lots of framed slogans about tidy houses making tidy minds or similar in amongst the little posies of flowers in china vases.

Right, procrastinating again, better get on with some stuff, see you later.

swanriver · 06/06/2011 09:15

Linzer in awe of anyone who can install anything, English Chinese or Fat Fairy speak

SC glad you got some gardening and horseriding in last weekend.

Ellie mould! cowpox! Mme Curie! Aspirin from chewing willow bark! Byron and his mosquito bite! I think medicine was the only interesting part of history for me, apart from the clothes Hmm

todo
two urgent bills to pay (CAR INSURANCE)
new ironing board buy
house bless
into school to help in library for a few hours

then
singing
ballet
football
Cubs
Scouts

and what's for supper? not sure - fish and potatoes I fear, and possibly kohlrabi - maybe I should buy some peas - they will be safe...

swanriver · 06/06/2011 09:18

thinking about medicine/history. oh yes and Chloroform. What I find interesting is that so many wonder cures ended up being replaced by other variants. Medieval Humours.

LinzerTorte · 06/06/2011 09:44

I have been googling (yes, I know - too much time on my hands Hmm) and apparently today is Sweden's national day and National Yo-Yo Day, neither of which would account for FlyLady's tardiness this morning. Maybe she overdid it on National Gingerbread Day yesterday and was recovering this morning (although, depending on where she is, it would still be very early/middle of the night over there).

SC and WhoKnows I find Word 2007 equally baffling and have avoided it wherever possible, but have decided that I cannot go on using Word 97 indefinitely. Blush

swan Kohlrabi is a staple of DH's diet. Maybe I should try cooking it sometime (he always eats it raw).

swanriver · 06/06/2011 09:54

Linzer it is the only thing left in the fridge atm! I like it raw too.

done
paid bills

PositiveAttitude · 06/06/2011 09:55

Hands Brew to Ellie and a handfull of bean sprouts to those living abroad! Grin

Just diving on from work as internet is not working at home. Angry This weekend I felt as if my right arm had been cut off with no internet , then my new, gorgeous, delightful, scrummy phone decided to break. I reported it broken to Orange at 11.30 on Saturday morninf and was asked what time I would like a new one delivered the next day!!! I didnt quite believe that they meant it, but chose 2pm. By 1.58pm yesterday I had a lovely young man on my doorstep with a brand new phone!!! That's what I call service.
Apparently my internet will be working by the end of this week.

Stupidly manic week this week, starting with a super-dooper stupid day today:
Now at job No 2
Lunchtime, drive to job No 3
home to cook dinner - quick stir fry tonight
Waitrose for weeks shopping
evening meeting to pore over job applicants for a new colleague from September.
Home to crash out at about 11pm!!!

I am supposed to be getting myself organised this week, because this weekend is the annual music festival, which means that from Wednesday onwards I am a bit stuck getting out and about, but I will be feeding hoardes of hungry teenagers at odd times of the day and night! Hmm

Must go and get some work done here.

have a good day everyone and I will be back properly when I am back in the 20th century!!

swanriver · 06/06/2011 13:36

Done

So much still to do Sad do I give up now before children come home or try and do a bit more.

LadyInPink · 06/06/2011 15:23

Hey everyone Smile

DH came back from the Dr's with the news that he has a dust allergy so i have been damp dusting everywhere (well not quite but getting there). We thought it was hayfever but he's been needing his inhalers constantly and I've been snowed under with work so the dusting part of the housework has been pushed to one side Sad

Done the food shop and home office work so FLYing is taking second place at the moment. Will start again soon though.

swanriver · 06/06/2011 16:07

lady I'm sorry, that is a nasty allergy. Does he find it worse in rooms with lots of soft furnishings/carpets? There is so much dust in the air recently due to lack of rain too. And old pillows/duvets can make things worse too.

done
moderately productive on foot
bought bread
picked up mended wheelchair
dropped off bike to be mended
gave small (rusty) bike to teacher and as a bribe a nearly new microscooter
piano practice
singing practice
picked up awful dcs who were fighting over a Air Raid Warden whistle ds1 bought in War Museum..

luckily singing cancelled till tomorrow, so a nice leisurely collapse till ballet at 4.30!

LadyInPink · 06/06/2011 16:44

Swan we changed all the downstairs flooring to wood a few years back as his asthma was worsening but upstairs we have carpets and curtains etc Sad We all suffer from allergies of some kind so we are an allergic household it seems. Sure it will sort itself soon if i keep up with damp dusting and thorough hoovering (i've really slid recently)Seems today's mission is a good one as haven't de-cobwebbed for ages.

Dropped DD at drama complete with feather duster and plastic tarrantula (her props for today - eek)

Going to do cous cous with salmon for dinner tonight so best get on.

BBL

Toffeefudgecake · 06/06/2011 17:13

Just dashing in quickly to wave at everyone. DS2 is demanding a 'chat' and dinner needs cooking, so I haven't got time to read through the thread. Had a busy day today trying to home ed DS1 and also do a house rescue. Have managed some hoovering, mopping, washing, cleaning mirrors, emptying of bins and a quick tidy up of the sitting room, but that's it. A friend of mine (who is very, very tidy) has offered to come over and help me restore order tomorrow. My house really must be looking bad, mustn't it? Blush

Am determined to have the house in a fit state before we go on holiday on Saturday. I don't want to come home to an untidy house. I have printed out Flylady's list of things to do before going on holiday, which I used last year.

Hope you're all OK.

LinzerTorte · 06/06/2011 17:24

Lady DS is allergic to dust (as am I, although not as severely), and DH ripped out the carpet in his bedroom last year and put in a wooden floor instead. We also bought allergy bedding (a pillow cover and mattress encasing) for his bed, and he's now much better - he's just started inhaling every other day rather than daily. The age of the house seems to make a big difference too; he's fine at home and when he stays overnight at his best friend's (both new-builds) but really suffers at my ILs' (whose house is around a century old) and the one time he stayed at another friend's (oldish) house.

LadyInPink · 06/06/2011 17:39

Linzer oooh really that's interesting, our house is turn of the century too so over 100 yrs old. We have had damp course put in for the mould spores and air vents in the bedroom and lounge which were the worst offenders and have blinds but they collect dust like anything! have a mattress and pillow cover too. We have put a new bedroom carpet in and that seems to be ok now as it's too cold to have wooden floors as our floors are so gapey.

Toffee wow you seem to have been extremely busy - can there be anything left for your friend to do tomorrow? Smile

Stillchuckingit · 06/06/2011 19:18

Just dashing in between helping dd with her 7 times table homework, preparing and eating chickpea and veggie curry (no roast yesterday so no cold cuts) and putting her to bed

LadyinPinksorry to hear about your dh's allergy. I'm a sufferer too (although not extreme). Sounds as if you have it under control. At least you have extra motivation to do the dusting which (I suppose) is a good thing! Grin

I was told to do all the bed linen and towel washing above 60°C which kills 'em outright (which I would do anyway) Apparently if you try and be environmentally friendly and wash at 30 or 40°C, 93.5% of the little blighters survive!! Euugghh!!

Stillchuckingit · 06/06/2011 19:18

Sorry! The whole point of that post was to say that I will be back later for a proper round up (for once!!)

OP posts:
scattyspice · 06/06/2011 19:34

My dh has a dust allergy too pinklady initially I was sympathetic and dusted loads but have lapsed recently (shouldn't he be over it by now?!). He also had a really nasty lung disease from the spores in the compost heap a while back.

Have hoovered and dusted. The rest can wait.

LadyInPink · 06/06/2011 20:13

Wow lots of dust allergy sufferers! DH sorts the compost bin out too, turning it etc and mows the lawn as i suffer from hayfever so the poor guy doesn't stand a chance does he Grin Must remember about the 60 degree wash though as that's a good point.

Just off for a bath and then early night as now DD back at school i'm exhausted today with the normal routine commencing again Smile

swanriver · 06/06/2011 20:43

For the most part no allergy sufferers at all here...Shock could it be that we all suffer from phobias instead to make up for it, as Dh is allergic to driving and so am I Hmm He is allergic to ceanothus blossom and birch pollen, very selective...
I do wash everything at 60 degrees, and the mattresses get steam cleaned too, it may help. Very manky old house full of tatty objects and dusty tomes.

I am feeling a bit gloomy. Ds2 has come back from Cubs, and it is clear he really isn't getting on there despite the kind Leader. Other Cubs have mentioned he is completely distracted, never stands in line, fidgets and is generally silly Sad. He doesn't really want to go either, but is quite chipper when he comes out (after misbehaving) quite unaware that he hasn't behaved well...
Ds1 went through a bad patch but generally fitted in, and now loves Scouts, so it is really Ds2 character/SN/aspie tendencies that is problem.. Anyway, I thought it would be good for ds2 socially but clearly not working out...so...Back to FOOTBALL!
