Anyone got an Ikea free home?

Was looking round our house and realised it is a shrine to ikea Blush. And it's 100 miles to our nearest store. It got me wondering whether anyone has avoided Ikea completely, and if so was it intentional or non intentional?

Not got a thing, nor have I ever set foot into the place (because it's miles away)

I got lots of rooms in my house and no Ikea stuff in them anywhere!! Never been!!

Dillydollydaydream · 21/11/2011 14:22

I've never been to ikea. I've always wanted to go and have a look though to see what it's all about.

whoopeecushion · 21/11/2011 14:31

I've just thought about this and realised that there is not a single room in my house which doesn't have Ikea stuff in in Blush.

You do have to shop carefully in there though. There are some really good things - eg sofa bought over 6 yrs ago and even with a boisterious family, it still looks new. But also some really awful quality stuff that falls apart. Overall I like it a lot, it's a really good shop.

Daydreaming · 21/11/2011 20:50

The look I really like is a mix of old and new.
And when it comes to new, I have to say I love IKEA!!
Ok, so the shopping experience is really hard work. But you can actually get some really good quality things for a great price if you choose well.

God my living room is almost entirely ikea Blush
Ektorp sofa, armchair and footstool
Poang chair
Hemnes tall bookshelf
Hemnes tv stand
Norden table
Big square toybox

Elsewhere in the house there is very little though...trofast unit and desk chair in the dc room and a colander and some cutlery in the kitchen. Oh and those plastic plates etc everyone seems to have.

I have nothing from Ikea. Been there twice and didn't like anything Hmm

OxfordGold · 21/11/2011 22:50

I like to mix it up a little - some old pieces, new pieces, some expensive some cheap...wouldn't call our house a shrine to Ikea, we have modern eclectic tastes and Ikea has it's place.

mumblechum1 · 21/11/2011 22:53

The bed in my littlest guest room is Ikea but has only been slept in for a weekend. As far as I know, it's ok.

I'm not crazy about Ikea, but if I was on a very tight budget I'd buy it. The store drove me nuts though, I couldn't seem to get out of it.

I've noticed that the furniture; beds, tv stand, chests of drawers are now in a skip/on the nature strip/in the garage, they don't look nice. But then we went cheap. Standard lamps, innocuous net curtains, storage boxes are all good.

The fact that the default setting for bedding is 100% cotton is a plus, unlike most department stores which "boast" of "cotton-rich", i.e. not cotton. Also they put two pillow slips in single set, and four in a double, unlike the tight-arsed Australian outlets.

I only shop there one hour before closing.

Dubai has an Ikea. Having arrived with a couple of suitcases it was fab as a one stop essentials shop.

Have a mixture though..one friend of mine newly arrived has page 23 in all it's entirety it's most disconcerting.

exoticfruits · 22/11/2011 07:53

I live too far away from one so have never stepped in one-I don't even get a catalogue through my door these days.

nancerama · 22/11/2011 07:54

I have just a fruit bowl and a cheese grater.

FloydieDoydie · 22/11/2011 08:51

You'd think given that a) there is no Ikea on this Island and b) I've never been in one either. But no! I have a lamp (eBay) and a chair (local recycling centre).

Is it wrong that I'd love to go? Blush

Also, I could do with a new cover for the chair, but have no idea what name it is - wonder how I find out?

BsshBossh · 22/11/2011 13:16

We have the odd item here and there but I dislike actually shopping there (too busy, too big, too stressful, too noisy) so no - hardly any items.

TiarasTimeOutsAndTantrums · 22/11/2011 13:18

I have a knife from there. And a bookcase but I've never been in there. DP went once, got scared and came back

cookingfat · 22/11/2011 16:49

Don't think we have an IKEA-free room, let alone home!
I quite like the minimalist style, even if quality isn't always great. Plan is to replace it, piece by piece as finances allow, with grown-up furniture.
